Morning had dawned in the skies over Canterlot. Apporta awoke with a long drawn out yawn as she stretched. Yesterday she had just participated in her first ever training session with Crystal Lance of the Equestria Army Mages. It was an exhausting day but nonetheless well worth it. Apporta had already learned two new spells, clairvoyance and the magic missile, and was eager to learn more. That day was also full of surprises, especially with her fellow apprentice who was training with her, StarShade.
StarShade. Immediately her mind triggered to him. She was incharge of keeing an eye on him by Crystal Lance, especially after all the things that happened. To lose him or worse have him injure himself and others would spell doom. She remembered teleporting StarShade to her room, but after that everything was a hazy blur.
She ran to where she placed him last, hoping he stayed there and not ran off. Thankfully the black colt was still there, sleeping soundly. Apparantly the previous day tired him out as well.
After getting ready, Apporta returned to where StarShade was at and sat in the chair. Much as she was hungry for breakfast, she knew that it was her responsibility to watch him. Everywhere he was, she would have to be. With that in mind, Apporta realized this was going to be tougher than she thought. For now though all she had to do was wait for him to wake up.

"O-oh..." came a low and gentle moan, "my head."
A sudden movement occured from StarShade's at first motinless form as the black unicorn finally regained consciousness and struggled to lift his head. With what seemed like a heavy burden, the young colt tried to open his eyelids. Slowly but surely, a light-green pupil began to show, followed by another. He stayed silent for a brief moment, before rubbing his eyes and then looking at his surroundings. Vision still blurr, mind still reeling, the young colt had no idea or recollection as to where he is at that very moment and hasn't realized that Apporta was sitting in a chair nearby, watching him.
"Where am I? What is this place?"

Apporta heard the colt waking up. He still looked a little tired waking up. It was no wonder considering the spells that the two learned from Crystal Lance and whatever that strange magic he was doing. Even now with his eyes open slightly, StarShade still seemed unaware of everything around him. Was he ok? Did that wierd magic somehow dealt some unkonwn damage to him?
"StarShade, this is Apporta. You and I are training together with Crystal Lance, remember? You fell unconscious, so I was asked by Crystal to look after you. I took you back to my pland and now here you are."
Apporta realized how awkward this must be, waking up in a place that he didn't know, talking to a pony that he did not have much interaction with before. This situation Apporta felt was going to remain awkward until the two broke the ice a little more. But for now she had to first make sure he was alright.

StarShade put his right fore-hoof unto his head as his vision slowly cleared.
"Yes... I remember. Lady Crystal was pulling me out of that pool of darkness I created. I tried to reverse the spell, and it appeared to be working until I... until everything went black. I cannot recall anything that has happened after that. I am so ashamed of myself to have failed like that right infront of her... She must really hate me now...."
The black unicorn's head suddenly jerked up in a mixture of realization and panic. He suddenly ran up to Apporta and grabbed the filly by her shoulders.
"Crystal Lance~! What happened to Lady Crystal?? Is she alright? Was she hurt?!"

StarShade appeared to be fine as he started waking up. He remembered creating the pool of black and having Apporta and Crystal Lance try to pull him out. The poor pony seemed so upset about embarassing himself in front of his mentor.
Then suddenly in an almost uncanny burst of speed, StarShade lept from where he was sleeping and grabbed Apporta. She felt both surprised and embarassed at the reaction. StarShade then began to pepper Apporta with questions about Crystal Lance. It was no wonder he did so as the last thing he would have remembered before blacking out would be Apporta and Crystal trying to pull him out. Plus the unicorn seemed very attached to his new teacher.
"Woah take it easy," Apporta said with surprise, "Everything is fine. Crystal Lance is safe and unharmed. After she and I pulled you out of... whatever that pool was, she told me to keep an eye on you and for me to take you back to my place since you were unconscious. Then she ended the training day and left. You don't have to feel ashamed. I don't think she was upset about you. You do seem to have some interesting powers there."

StarShade released his hold on Apporta and began to slowly slump down into a sitting position.
"That is such a relief..." he responded, "but I feel so ashamed for failing in that spell... Seems as though I need to find and learn another passive spell to replace that failed one."
The black unicorn then looked up and gazed at his fellow apprentice and gave a little smile.
"Interesting powers? Why thank you, milady. I have been doing some practicing in using my unicorn magic since I was a young foal, but of course, foals aren't allowed to use the more advanced magic spells."
The colt gave out a heavy sigh.
"By the way, thank you for looking after me while I was unconscious, Apporta is it not? I believe we have not been properly introduced. I am StarShade, and it's a pleasure to meet you, milady."
He gave Apporta a humble bow.

Apporta listened to StarShade with great intent. She didn't have much interaction with the colt during training as the two were trained separately for most of the time. The pony seemed very ashamed at the fact that he, in his mind, failed a spell in front of Crystal Lance. He also seemed timid by nature, almost afraid to say or do anything.
"Yes, my name is Apporta," the unicorn said, "Nice to meet you, StarShade. And you don't have to bow or anything like that. I'm not Princess Luna or any royalty."
She then thought about his perdicament about his spells and his feelings of failure.
"You didn't fail casting that magic missile or melding into your shadow. It seemed that Crystal Lance was actually impressed by the powers that you have. You do seem to have alot of raw magical power. Your practicing since you were a foal seemed to streghten your abilities. To me it just looked like you were having problems trying to control your spells. I can teach you a few ways to control your spell if you want. But first, would you like to head to the mess hall for breakfast?"

StarShade blushed at Apporta's comments and looked to one side.
"Oh, thank you for your kind words, milady. I really appreciate it. As a matter of fact, I do feel quite famished. Let us have breakfast then. Please lead the way."

(OOC: It's ok.)
Apporta led StarShade from her room through the halls of the Equestria Army compound. The two passed by lecture halls. training rooms, recreation areas, barracks, and other areas of interest. Soon they arrived at a set of double doors with the words Mess Hall printed above.
Opening to door the two found the place about half filled. This would make finding a seat fairly easy later on. For now the two made their way to the line for food. "I'll have the short stack of pancakes please," Apporta said to the unicorn behind the counter who levitated three floppy pancakes on to the plate. "There's so much to choose from here. Did you find something you'd like StarShade?"

Before he answered Apporta's questions, StarShade signalled to the unicorn behind the counter with his right forehoof. "Excuse me, miss," he said to the unicorn, "I'll have a large plate of cheesy wedges, please." Turning his gaze towards Apporta, he replied, "I already have, though it may take some time for them to prepare it. Shall we find a table for you while we wait for my meal to arrive?"

It seemed that StarShade was now awake and interested in eating. That was good as it showed that he was recovering from his training experience. "Um... sure. We can find a seat and wait for your food to be ready."
The two passed down the seemingly endless rows of tables looking for a seat. There were a few earth and pegasus ponies who would stare at the two. One even snickered, trying to hide it but was still loud enough for the two. Apporta knew it was due to her and StarShade. it wasn't like they looked like military material. There was also still the stigma of having unicorns in the military fighting with magic when compared to the strength of an earth pony or the speed of a pegasus. Then again, it was expect since the Army headquarters was located in Canterlot, and most of the ponies there were unicorns.
"Ignore them," Apporta said glaring at the one who snickered, "Let's find a table."

"I have been ignoring a lot of things all my life, milady." he responded to her, "Honestly, I'm a bit happy that they find the sight of me enough to make them giggle. It is a lot better then seeing them cower in fear." He turned his head slightly to smile at a table filled with occupied by four millitary fillies, who quickly turned away their gazes from him - one even hid her face behind her friend's mane. "But it would seem that some things never change..."
They finally found a table next to a poster showing Canterlot's royal millitary coat of arms. "Ah, this would seem like a good place," StarShade told Apporta as he spun half-way around to signal the earlier unicorn he had ordered his food from to inform where he will be eating. "Wait, milady, allow me to clean up the place, first." A dark gray glow began to emanate from the black unicorn's horn, and without warning his magical aura had jumped out, like a living tentacle trying to ensnare a prey, before enveloping the table. A few seconds later the drak-grey aura lifted itself up, bringing with it all the dirt from the surface of the now clean table. With a flick of his horn, StarShade swung his aura towards ther nearest bin before promptly dropping all the dirt into it. With a smoke-like disappearing act by his magic aura, the black unicorn beckons his friend to have a seat. "Ladies first." It was quite obvious that a lot of the other ponies there saw StarShade using his magic.

Rather than being upset about the other ponies, he merely cast it aside. It appeared to Apporta that there were several times in his life when he encountered similar reactions. What interested her the most was the comment he made about being feared. She guessed that it was due to his magical ability.
Without a warning, a black tendril appeared from StarShade's horn, causing Apporta to jump back in surprise. It seemed that the unicorn had control over it as he was able to clean the table easily with it. Several of the ponies around Apporta and StarShade were staring, most amazed, with a few frightened. It took alot to get a member of the Equestria Army frightened, but sure enough some were. Then again these same ponies might just be frightened of any magic. Magic wasn't something one could easily identify as it took many forms.
"Um.. thanks," Apporta replied as she sat, still recovering from what she saw. "So I have to ask, and please don't be upset if I do, but what exactly is that black aura tendril thing? I have studied much while at the university, but I never heard about that."

"Black aura tendril thingy?" StarShade asked before breaking into short giggles, "That is the first time I have heard anypony call it that. Well, believe it or not, milady, that is actually my unicorn magic aura. Unlike the magic aura of other unicorns that seem detached from the objects they're levitating, mine sticks to my horn, or me for that matter, whenever I use my magic. It can stretch very far, thus taking the form of a large, dark-grey whip or tentacle."
In appearence the black unicorn seemed ignorant to the expressions and attitudes of the other ponies, but he was actually well aware of what was happening around him. But years of adapting to that feeling has made it easier for him to push it all aside.
"I believe they are almost done with my order."

Apporta blushed as StarShade seemed to giggle with her poor attempt to describe his magic. "Ah, I understand. Your aura just attaches to whatever you're trying to move. That's very interesting as I never heard of a unicorn with an aura so visible."
Apporta liked the fact that he wasn't caring about the other ponies staring at him. Rather than getting upset or lashing back at them, he chose to ignore them. This showed great restraint on his part. Ponies, it seemed, get upset about things they don't understand. If they only asked StarShade like Apporta did, then things would be different. Yet apporta knew that it was easier to move a mountain than to change a mind.
"Do you know if the ponies behind the lunch counter are planning to bring you food or if you need to go up there? Because if it's the later, I can get your food quickly with my teleportation."
