Through the familiar mid-day streets, Dusk Wing meandered through the city. Taking in the destruction the diamond dogs had caused. While this city certainly wasn't the most friendly, it was his home and the loss of live left him rather somber.
It was the afternoon of his first day back in Manehattan and he had been wandering around since arriving that morning. He'd wandered all over the city to practically know it by heart, so he wasn't lost. Instead he was avoiding going to see what had become of his house.
A slight sense of dread would wash over him whenever he would think about what had happened to it. That house and everything in it, while not much, represented everything he had worked for the past few years.
Lost in thought and worry, Dusk continued to traverse through the streets. Though, a familiar sight caught his attention. "I recognize this place it's where that unicorn, what was his name? Black Fire? Black Flare? Dark Flare! This is where Dark Flare helped me escape those thugs." It didn't take him long to realize that him showing his face so close to where they attacked him before. And without any further hesitation, he began to quickly make his way to a slightly safer portion of the city.

Glide had left the funeral of her family still in her military blues. She said her goodbyes to the others who had come to wish her well and give their condolences at the funeral parlor. She now wandered through the city keeping her head down and her thoughts to herself. Construction went on around her busy bee's fixing their hive. She adjusted her hat and fixed her cords, she was meticulous about her uniform and it must be right at all times. Her commanding officer would want her back on the ship soon enough, however today was not that say so she was free to wander.
In her wanderings she lost herself in her mind, thinking about her family. Everything she gave up in order to protect them. She had left them in order to protect them, she must keep repeating that to herself. She wanted her family safe...however look where her sending them to safety got her... she kicked a small rock as she walked and focused on that while thinking. Before long she looked up and didn't know where she was. She was a small town pony and had never lived in a big city before the war, especially not Manehatten.
She looked around searching for some sort of landmark that would tell her where she was. The lack of dim alleys and the larger amount of ponies told her she was in a better part of town, which was comforting to say the least. Stepping out of the flow of ponies on the sidewalk she leaned against a building and fixed her blues once more. "Dang" she thought to herself. "I never imagined how great these blues look." She continued looking about to see if she could get her bearings.

Dusk traversed through the streets, moving away from both the location of that night's ordeal, and his home. The faces of ponies past by, but, unlike he usually did, he wasn't paying attention to them. All he was doing was wandering aimlessly through the city, not unlike his late night strolls.
He continued like this for an hour? Two hours? He didn't know, he wasn't keeping track. In this mindless stupor until he accidentally ran into somepony. It wasn't hard, but it certainly caught him, and the other pony unaware.
"Oof. I'm sorry. Wasn't looking where I was going." He said, backing up. The pony he ran into, a mare, was dressed in her military blues. She looked surprised about being ran into, but Dusk noticed signs of sorrow and confusion as well. "Are you alright?"

She was looking in the other direction at a rather tall building when the stallion ran into her. It turned into an almost comical tumbling of random flailing hooves as the fell to the ground and rolled. "Ow hey!" she cried out when they collided into one another. She fiddled with her uniform straightening it after she stood up. She gave a soft huff and nodded as she straightened her buttons. "It's alright accidents happen, and yes I'll be alright. I was just.. sight seeing I suppose." She lied as she moved once more out of the hustle of moving ponies.
Sitting in front of a cafe she pulled out a chair under and awning and motioned with her hoof for him to join her. "Judging by you not watching where you were going it sounds like something is on your mind. Why don't you have a seat and i'll buy you a drink." She adjusted her hat on her head and relaxed into her seat, glad to be sitting once again, don't know why she didn't just sit down in the first place and avoid getting run into in the first place.

"Well that's... good." He said, not at all buying the sight seeing bit. But, like she said, he had a lot on his mind. And it seemed like she did as well. Sometimes it's nice to just have someone to talk to.
"Alright. I'll take you up on that offer." He said with a smirk. Taking up the chair opposite her, he decided to start off the pleasantries. "I'm Dusk Wing. And while I don't really buy the sight seeing line, I can tell you're not from here, because there's a cheaper place a couple blocks that way." He pointed towards the way he was going before running into the mare.
Motioning for the server to come over, he continued "And I can tell I'm not the only one that has a lot on their mind. I think it'd be good if both of us had somepony to talk to. And something I learned recently, is that help comes at some unexpected times." He paused, "I'm rambling. Anyway, what's your name?"

Glide smiled gently as the stallion sat down at the table with her. When he pointed out the cheaper place she simply shrugged after turning to look where he pointed. "Oh well" she said "I don't really have the burning desire to get up anyway." Her obvious lack of knowledge of the area made her slightly uncomfortable, she wanted to know the layout of where she was. However, that wasn't happening anytime soon. His comment about not believing her statement about sight seeing came to no surprise to her, she wasn't trying to be convincing. Though it would be nice to have someone to simply act normal for once and have coffee. Like that lunch she never got with her fellow doctor int he medical tent in Canterlot. Seemed like an eternity ago at this point.
Glide smiled softly and ordered the both of them a cup of coffee and pastries to go with. Something to eat sounded just perfect right now. "My name is Glide Heart as for you're rambling- she made air quotes with the word. "I don't think you're rambling at all, having someone to actually talk is a welcoming sound." She smiled gently and leaned back against her chair relaxing slightly.

Letting out a light chuckle, "Yeah. Though, personally I do enjoy the coffee of this place. So I'm not complaining." He looked out to the street, seeing the ponies working hard at repairing the city. "It's a shame the damage the diamond dogs caused."
With a soft sigh, he looks back at Glide Heart. "Here I am switching between deep thought and small talk. So what really brings you to Manehattan?" He leans back and glances at the barista to check on the progress of their order. "Judging from your uniform and recent events. It's not that difficult to tell you are probably here for a funeral. I don't mean to pry, so if you don't want to say, then you don't have to."

Glide chuckled softly at how quickly the stallion in front of her could switch from one topic to the other, his mind must be as active as an angry hornet hive. "I hope you'r right about the coffee I need something to keep me awake, and the condition of the city is sad but i'm sure with all these hard working ponies on it it'll be fixed in no time." She smiled once more and thanked the barista as she served them their coffee. she took a much needed sip after adding in plenty of sugar and cream. She never took her coffee black.
Her sip was interrupted by his next question. she stopped and stared into the swirl of the coffee and gave a disheartened sigh. She looked at herself at his comment about her garments and nodded softly. "Aye you're right I am here for a funeral, many good ponies died in this gruesome battle and I wish there had never been a battle. Then my life would've been normal.." She stared into her mug for a moment more before snapping herself out of her sappy emotions.
Looking up and adding another small packet of sugar to her coffee she asked him "so what are you doing wandering about? I assume you live here since of your extensive knowledge of the city." It was time fer her to draw her own conclusions and be a smarty pants. He was a very observant pony.

Listening patiently as Glide spoke her piece, Dusk added some sugar to his coffee before taking a sip. Everything about her reaction, from the tone, body language, and what she said told him that it was someone really close. Maybe more than one someone. He wondered if he should press for this info, but decided against it. He had said he wouldn't pry and meant it.
Her question brought a slight smile to his lips "Heh, that I do. Lived here for the past few years. Done some work around the city, just trying to make a living." He paused, his worry about his home and last few years of work being demolished resurfacing. Adjusting his fedora, he continued "I'm worried that my home, and what I've worked for these last few years might have been destroyed in the battle. I don't know where I'd go or what I'd do if it was."
"But here I am, worrying about something that can be rebuilt. While those that died-" he interrupted himself, taking a sip of his drink. Really, he was doing it just so he could figure out where this line of thinking was going. "Are lost forever."

Glide became rather curious about what exactly it was that Dusk did in the city, well.. before the war. She was also curious about where he was when the attack happened if he lived here. He should have been here when it happened? With his comment about his house though she assumed he hadn't been home in awhile. "So you don't know what happened to your house? How long has it been since you've been home?" She fell somber at his remark about those that were gone. He was right they would never be back. She sighed and looked back down at her coffee.
"I assume you are rather curious about who's funeral I was attending. I know you said that you wouldn't pry however I feel like it'll come out sooner or later..." She looked up then into the clouds high above the sky scrapers that surrounded them. "I was burying my son and husband. They were caught in a building that collapsed during the attack. I met with the pony who was with them when they died as well as a friend I met at a bar before hand. He and I seem to keep running into one another. Quite sort, can't talk at all and uses a notepad to speak."

Dusk shook his head, "No I don't. I was in the Griffon Kingdom at the time. I had left a few days before the attack happened. I traveled to Canterlot, or what remained of it, soon after. For about a week after I heard what happened here, I helped where I could. But I wanted to see the damage for myself." He wanted to tell her enough to satisfy her curiosity, but not enough that she would continue to pry.
He was taking another sip of coffee when she said who's funeral it was. His shock left him attempting to cough up the hot liquid he just inhaled. "I- *cough* I'm sorry for your loss." he managed to get out after getting it, mostly, under control. "But, it's good you have ponies there to support you." He wiped up the small mess he had caused, wearing a sheepish grin while he did. "So, how long do you intend to stay in Manehattan?"

She knew that what he had told her was plenty to answer her question. She didn't want to pry as much as he didn't. She knew how painful it was to lose a home and assumed he didn't like talking about it as much as she didn't. Ponyville seemed like eons ago at this point and her life as a family doctor seemed to be long gone. Though his mention of being with the griffons peaked her interest. Biting her tongue she knew it was a question for later.
Seeing his sputtering and choking at her comment she felt bad. She didn't mean to shock him like that. She offered him her napkin to help clean the small mess he had made after wiping up her side of the table. "It's alright, they're okay now and it's not like it was your fault the building fell." She attempted to take another sip of her coffee, though she was all out. She put down her empty mug and pushed it to the side with a sigh more in her own regret than the lack of coffee.
She was happy got his next question to move along the conversation. She gave a soft smile and replied "My orders are in Canterlot actually. I'm stationed on a naval vessel along with Avitus' crew of griffons. I've only been given grievance leave and have to return pretty soon."

Taking the napkin she offered, he wiped up the last few bits of his mess. He felt rather awkward after his brief freak out. And the talk of death wasn't really helping matters any. So, it was a relief when she mentioned this griffon crew. Something to make the conversation less depressing.
"Oh? What's it like in a griffon crew? I'd imagine they'd work you pretty hard, from what little I've heard of their training." He attempted to take another sip of coffee, but was disappointed as the last few drops left the mug. For a moment he just stared forlornly into the mug as Glide spoke, before setting it down and focusing his attention back to her.

She noticed his mug was just as empty as hers and flagged down the waitress again to refill their mugs. Smiling and nodding to the mare as she poured them both a new mug Glide reached for the sugar and cream again. Turning her coffee from a rich black to a smooth tan color. Returning her attention once more to her new friend she chuckled softly remembering her days training with the griffons. The wing tears and tendons that constantly threatened to give. "Yes, they are quite rough and made no special let ups for their one pony. I trained like a griffon and fought like a griffon." She took a sip to test the balance of sweeteners. Satisfied with her mug she set it aside and smiled up at her friend.
She seemed quite fond of these griffons who took her into their crew and home, treated her like another part of the crew rather than an outsider. "Though I think you'll find it odd to know I didn't start out as a pony trained like a griffon. I was originally a doctor, I enlisted as a doctor in the air force once the war came to Ponyville." She realized she was rambling and stopped herself there for now, if he wanted to know more he could ask for more.

When the server refilled his mug, he offered he a polite thanks before adding about the same amount of sugar as the last cup. He didn't like his coffee plain, but he did like if it retained some bitterness. Calmly, he stirred the hot drink while still paying attention to mare across from him. From what she told him, the griffon military was as tough as he'd heard. And she had endured their training, day in and day out for who knows how long. While, he was a bit wary of any government official, his respect for this mare was growing.
At the mention of Ponyville, he got a good idea of what drove her. An amused smirk crept it's way onto his face as he put together the chain of events that led to this meeting. "I take it you're from Ponyville?" he asked, his tone sounding curious and friendly. "Or at least lived there before you enlisted?" With a sip he leaned back in the chair to get a bit more comfortable.
