Darkness: Misconceptions, Myths, and Uses

Darkness is often at times seen as evil and dark element. This is in fact false, as darkness is not inherently evil just as light is not inherently good. The only difference is what darkness is used for, used for evil and it is corruptible and dangerous. If it is used for good it can be a force to be reckoned with. There are several notable examples of these elements being used for both reasons. The most obvious reason for evil one would have to look to Nightmare Moon and Sombra both.

With Nightmare moon we get a case of corruptible darkness as Princess Luna being the Princess of Night which is often associated with darkness. Her case of corruptible darkness is because of her jealousy of the day, this in turn allowed her to be turned into Nightmare Moon (whether you believe in the comic version of the Nightmare Entity or that fact she was indeed Nightmare Moon).

The Sombra example of Darkness being used for evil is the subjugation of the Crystal Ponies. He is also noted to be using Dark Magic constantly. As when he is approaching the Crystal Kingdom the dark crystals that appear are caused by the Dark Magic. (If you consider him to be the living shadow called an Umbrum as in the comic then he could be considered another entity)

There is only one example found of darkness being used for good and that is when Twilight uses it to find the Crystal Heart.

Despite the shown abilities there are quite a few other skills that come to Dark Users.

Theses abilities vary greatly and are usable if one can maintain themselves while using the powers of Darkness. Beginners can only shoot beams of darkness out of their horns and their eyes gain a dark glow to them along with the dark crystals, apprentices in the way of darkness can make solid shapes of darkness and shadows using them as weapons or attacks of sorts. Experts can change the shape of their bodies and even become shadows themselves, they can use this form to move great distances and even morph the darkness into more complex shapes. Masters however can do incredible things going so far as creating near living creatures of darkness, masters can even do other things such as teleporting using the darkness. There are other things masters of darkness can do.


Dark Beam: This can shoot a beam of darkness that can be used to charge objects with darkness. This was seen when Princess Celestia charge a crystal with darkness and caused dark crystals to erupt from the ground. This is the only instance where the users eyes gain the the dark flames to their eyes.

Shaping Darkness: Apprentices can make dark shapes using what can look like a solid shape of darkness. These can be made into spheres, cubes, triangles. They can even create floating shields of darkness and even primitive armor. With more advanced training they can even create spears, swords and other weapons. They can even make more complex armors.

Shadow Form: As shown by Sombra users of this power can move around as formless shadows that can move faster then most. They can travel great distances however the longer they travel the more magic it drains.

Teleporting Darkness: Much like regular teleporting this type of teleporting requires less thought as they only need to know their destination. This however takes slightly longer and requires much more magic using it, not viable in combat situations.

Living Darkness: These Living Darkness creatures are not fully living creatures and are dependent on the host. These beings can range from a animal such as a canine or even a bird. These types are more dependent on the host and can only do one kind of tasks.

The second type however is much more complex. This is a torso of a bipedal creature. The most common torsos are Diamond Dog variants, Minotaur types, and an unknown creature being the last. These ones require less control and can move on their own, almost if they have a mind of their own. They however always have the desire to protect or follow their host will, whether it was defense or offense. They lack a lower body and often stay close to their host their lower body is inside the host's shadow.

The Myth of Darkness:

There are several different myths about the darkness and it's origins. The major myths often heard is that it predates time, that it is an entity, it is formless, that it is inherently evil. There are other myths but these myths are the most major ones and are often told from adults to children. They are often used to scare or warn away those interested in the darkness.

The first of these myths is that it predates time. Existing before life and light, this however is false. What existed before life, light and time is actually the void, the great nothingness. There is a reason as to why this is, the reason is that because darkness cannot exsist without the light as the light cannot exsist without the darkness, this is often called the Nature of Balance or Equilibrium.

The second most common myth of the darkness is that it is an entity, a living creature. This myth is false as well, this is the most easiest of myths to debunk because the shadow creatures masters of the dark magic can conjour require a mental link. This mental links keeps them in their form and allows them to move. The level of intelligence a shadow creature can show is how well the magic user can give them.

The third myth, the myth that darkness is formless is actually true. This is because it requires a great amount of effort and mental strength of the caster to give form to the darkness. The darkness is thick however comparable to a heavy liquid like substance.

The last myth as stated above is false. The darkness is not inherently evil, it is no more eviler than the light. It's reputation as evil comes from those who has used it for evil. Like the light the darkness requires its significant other to exsist. This is Nature of Balance, Equilibrium or Zen, the darkness is only evil when willed to be evil but is good when willed to do good. However more often then not due to the misconceptions and myths the good side of this element is hardly explored.
