The rock hit the tree, bounced back and hit Baxter over the head. Good plan.

Baxter swore as the rock came back and hit him in the head, only escalating his frustration. The wolf stood up angrily, taking his things and walking again, this time in another direction. After a short distance he stopped, firing an arrow directly in front of him and deciding to follow it's path. He wasn't even quite sure why he did it, but at this point he was just trying out random ideas.

The arrow traveled in a straight path, hitting a tree far ahead of Baxter. As Baxter tried following its trajectory, he noticed he finally managed to get out of the circular area he was in. Now he could also see why he was stuck there in the first place, he was in a sinkhole, made of very moderate slopes. Each step caused him to veer into the sinkhole, eventually causing him to get back where he started. Following the arrow, he was able to exit the sinkhole and proceed onwards.
He might actually find Ice Fang, but what would he do if he did? Would Ice Fang believe him? Would he be angry? Maybe laugh at him for listening to the Justiciar? What if it was all a lie, would Ice Fang just command Baxter away? Would he send him home, alone?

By dumb luck perhaps, Baxter's random idea had worked. He looked back once he reached the arrow, now able to see what had caused the entire ordeal. Some massive, hardly noticeable sinkhole. The wolf took his arrow and continued onward, ticked off that something so stupid had kept him up.
Now that Baxter was actually making progress, he began to think more and more about his confrontation with Ice Fang. The other wolf wouldn't be happy that Baxter had followed him, and Baxter could only hope he wouldn't have to face more of Ice Fang's act. He was stressed enough as it was, and having Ice Fang yell at him wouldn't help at all. The wolf gulped at the idea, continuing deeper into the forest.
And if the justiciar had been lieing to him? If he had twisted Ice Fang's words to manipulate Baxter? Then he'd really look like an idiot. He would have done all this, gotten beaten up by Swift and her gang, for nothing. But Ice Fang himself had told Baxter to leave. The other wolf either wanted to get rid of Baxter or really thought Sharp was up to something. And if that was the case, there was no reason for Ice Fang to stay either. Baxter wasn't going to leave him here to die, and he didn't care if Ice Fang had some lame excuse for staying.
