Set out on his own, into the wilderness of the dry savanah, late afternoon. A Zebra laid sluggishly across a series of outcrops, overlooking the land around him. Mostly the open plains was where he chose to operate... avoiding the jungles at all cost.
His name was Nyuesi, but the translation for such a name was "Black"... A nearly full black zebra, with limited white stripes across his body, a slick mohawk, and a cut tail.
He certainly looked like the kind of colt for such a name, strong, heavy, dark green eyes... save for the very strange reptilian eye slits in their center. His ear's twitched, jingling the gold piercing in his right ear, snorting softly.
At his side, leaning agaisnt him, and stuck between his right armpit, and his chest, was a short spear(Not the legendary one... just... wood, and stone tip). His eyes were closed by now, resting from a rough few hours wandering about the hot savanah.
Even his mohawk had begun to dribble with some sweat from the hot sun alone. His tail flicked left, and right, swatting at the large flies, and other pests around him. Caked with some dirt, and grass stains. Like the name "Savage" implies... he certainly LOOKED uncivilized.

Jasiri tossed her mane to rid it of flies. Like all zebras, it stood on end and so simply waggled back and forth on her neck. Dirt puffed up from the parched ground as she walked, smearing her brownish-lilac pelt with its off-white stripes (or, at least they used to be off-white...) and mixing with sweat to create mud. This would have been refreshing, but the sun baked it instantly, leaving only annoying, tiny dirt clods hanging from the strangest places.
Giving an irritated snort, Jasiri trudged forward. The outcroppings was the final stop for her rounds, the mark of a full circle. It was her responsibility to make sure all of the guards were steadfast in their watch. She'd just met the last one. The shift was almost done.
Something moved in the distance and Jasiri froze, listening with her body. Using the natural camouflage her stripes provided, she sniffed the air. Just as she suspected... Gnolls. But another scent she hadn't anticipated reached her as well. A fellow tribe member.
Jasiri remained undecided for only a moment before springing into action, running towards the familiar scent. "Look out! Gnolls on your flank! Move!"

Nyu did tend to dose on Guard duty. Though he generally desired to act fast no matter what the situation may be. When he heard the voice, his heart thumped at the word "Gnoll", and his eyes flashed open, his hoof slapping his spear into the air, and though a little rugged, he managed to get the tough wood in his jaws, facing his unprotected flank where they supposedly advanced from.
He grunted out a brutish: Where?! his jagged handmade weapon blotting out most of his words. He was crouched, legs wide apart and ready to bolt, or strike back if neccasary. His sharp ears twitched down, and his green eyes were wide with anticipation.
He always wanted a little action now, and then... whether he was in over his head, he did know better. But doing nothing but watching the savanah for hours on end could really eat away at his patience. Nyeusi shifted with rapid succession, staring down the side of the outcropped rocks for these violent creatures. Diamond-Dog spinoffs that they were...

Jasiri reached the soldier and searched for the origin of the Gnoll scent. There, in the brush, was a single creature. She snorted in disdain. "Hmph. You can stand down, soldier. The idiot coward won't come anywhere near us. He's probably just lost."
All the same, Jasiri thought. Can't have him following us back to the village...
She tossed on her mask and raised her spear, letting out an ear-piercing shriek and running toward the Gnoll as if he was only a pigeon. The Hyena-hybrid Diamond Dog yelped and bolted. Jasiri took off her mask and smirked before heading back. "You got lucky this time, mwezi mmoja, but don't let me, or worse, catch you sleeping on duty again. Is that clear?"

The Zebra shut his eyes up with a stubborn gall, "My apologize, mwanamke...", he grumbled, whipping around, and planting his spear into the ground, "It is a hot day... I do not wake well in the heat.", he had a very near black coat with small white stripes, it was not pleasent in the heat.
But he knew better than to cry for mercy, "I'll do better.", he grumbled, looking aside out onto the blazing plains.
"Does this mean my shift is over, mwanamke...?", he asked suddenly.

Jasiri hesitated in her reply, but, as if on cue, the replacement approached and saluted. "Yes, soldier, you're finished here. If you want to redeem yourself, prove your alertness on our way back to the village."
She turned to the replacement soldier. "There was a Gnoll here only a moment ago. He might have been lost or perhaps scouting the area. Be on your guard, he may bring back a pack."
Jasiri placed her mask back in her saddlebag and turned to Nyuesi. "You're leading me, soldier. Show me you haven't forgotten your training."
