Appleloosa, the frontier town right at the edge of the Griffin Kingdom. An apple growing colony of unprecedented proportions, and producers of some of the best apple pie this side of Equestria! The town was lively, fun, and their hospitality was known far and wide for being one a pony would never forget.
And yet, somehow, sitting alone at the edge of town, a soft green pony, black maned and sad was crying. Who this filly was, who knew? But sitting all alone on a rock, sobbing her eyes out, it was obvious she was not in the best of moods. Her grey dress was stained and worn, her eyes red and puffy. She did not look at her best.
Who was this mysterious pony and how did she get all the way out to Appleloosa? It was a small town and everypony knew everypony, she wasn't one of the locals.

Daisy had a spring in her step and a wiggle in her walk. She had bits to her name, a home, and some new friends. Morrow Rose was going to start visiting her in the mornings and Daisy felt that she and Sterling had come to an understand broaching on a friendship. All in all, things were looking up for her. Almost nothing could bring her down. That is until she heard the pathetic sobs coming from a tiny filly sitting not a yard away on the side of Daisy's path.
Not 3 months ago, Daisy would have just passed this filly by without a second thought. She had been so selfish then. But she had turned over a new leaf and a small part of her heart went out to this filly. Before she even realized it, she rushed over to the pony and whipped out a kercheif. "Now, now, darling. Why's a pretty little thing like you got to go spoil your face with those tears?" Daisy dropped down to the ground next to the filly. It took every ounce of restraint not to scoop her into a crushing hug.

The filly did not reply, too lost in her crying to even notice Daisy's offering. A label on the side of her dresses' collar was marked with the name "Buttercup". She continued weeping into her hooves, it would seem getting her attention would require more than just talking to her.
Her stained, worn dressed looked out of place, even in a town with Appleloosa's old fashioned sense of style, it was like something taken out of a very old photo. Perhaps it belonged to the filly's grandmother. But as it were, the filly did not give any sign that she had at all registered Daisy Mae.

Daisy huffed. Even now a bit of her old self bled through. She was not used to being ignored. She took a moment to calm herself taking the opportunity to look the filly over. She seemed so out of place. Daisy spotted the embroidered name on the filly's collar. "That's a pretty name. Buttercup? Is that you?" Daisy peaked down at the photo Buttercup was clutching. "Did you lose something, sweetheart?" She tentatively patted the filly on the back trying not to upset her further.

The filly finally turned to look at her, and opened her mouth, but then a sob attack took over her again. It would seem she could not calm herself down, perhaps Daisy could think of a way to soothe her.
As it were the filly returned to her sobbing, not intentionally ignoring Daisy, but she just couldn't stop sobbing, not even enough to catch her breath so she could explain her problem.

Daisy stared at the sobbing creature wracking her brain for a way to console her. She couldn't seem to find out what was wrong and the filly wouldn't stop crying long enough to speak. Daisy thought back to when she was feeling this sad when she herself was a filly. Her daddy would come over to her her and take her in one of his bear hugs and sing until she stopped crying. Daisy started softly. "When you walk through the storm Hold your head up high And don't be afraid of the dark At the end of the storm There's a golden sky And the sweet silver song of the lark
Walk on, through the wind Walk on, through the rain Though your dreams be tossed and blown Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone You'll never walk alone
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone You'll never walk alone" By the time she was done, she noticed that she had tears in her eyes. That song held so many happy memories of her youth and just hearing it again made her feel warm and loved all over again.

The filly gradually stopped crying as Daisy sang her song, her sobs lessening more and more as she tried to listen, until they stopped completely, and only streams of tears from her eyes gave evidence that she was crying.
"I can't get to my parents..." She said, "They told me never to go out in the desert alone." She finally explained, the poor thing.
