(OOC: This is a companion thread to The Mystery of Rainlock Mansion, and cross-references may occur.) Lost Star walked out of her last class for the week and looked around. The weather was cooling and she needed a new coat, but because of the invitation she'd received yesterday she also needed a new dress. "Well, I guess I'd better put my books away and count my bits. I hope I have enough for everything I've got to buy. Oh, and I should go look in the library. I just know there's something important there about Dr. Rainlock." She wished again for more friends, as she could have asked them about the apparent recluse. "Oh, darnit. Maybe I should have asked my professors about her, too!" The grey and black unicorn walked into an open space and looked around. Library, dorm, professor, shopping. Hm. Wait, the shops close earlier than the library does, I think? I'd better get to my room and get ready to shop!Lost delighted in the trot to her room.

After putting her books away, Lost spent a few moments considering the letter. What would make for a good masquerade dress? She had no idea. The whole concept was almost blank in her mind.
Frou-Frou Tailly would know. And I can't ask her, all her friends would snob at me for weeks. She sighed. That filly needs better friends.
The unicorn pulled out her old jacket, with a threadbare seam showing. Looks like that's going to come apart any day now. I guess I can't put this off. She donned the sad-looking thing, re-filled her wallet from a separate stash, and readied her saddlebags for the trip downtown.

Once on the street, Lost Star headed toward Canterlot's Market Circle, to see if she could find at least one good clothier's shop -- and a couple of other shops as well. There were a few ponies from the Academy as well, and she had no choice but to walk past them instead of bypassing the encounters. The looks (and comments) she received were not always welcome, especially when she finally found a clothing store and managed to tear her jacket on the door handle going in.
But that only built up her determination to replace the old thing as soon as possible.
