It was sunset, as Rapid Fire flew along his patrol route. He never liked sunsets. Just because they're 'pretty' doesn't mean they're worth viewing - they came every day.
He'd been along this route multiple times before - every day, without fail. Normally, he'd be accompanied by other paramedic pegasi. But he couldn't stand being with them, avoiding them as much as he could. Even when he was required to be with them, he avoided them. He not only delighted in pissing them off, he enjoyed charging them, and biting whoever was in his way at any given moment. Rapid, unable to think why he felt this way, hated them simply for their idiotic banter with one another while on duty, their laziness compared to his work ethic, and their fatigue after dealing with a real emergency. They were weaker than he, and he took some pleasure from this comforting assumption.
But beyond all that, if Rapid pondered over his reasons for hating them, he would have realized that at the end of their shifts, they all returned to a state of normalcy. They separated their lives from their work. He had no life. All he did was work, or prepare for work. He made a commitment to himself long ago to be the best in this line of work. But he had no long-term goals, like they did...
And he would hear them tell stories to one another, talking about their families, their children... Sometimes, when he listened to a certain theme of stories, his heart would race uncontrollably, and he'd almost panic. He would even flinch mid-flight, like he expected a blow.
And so, he hated them.
Rapid Fire flew at a regular speed. His left eye was damaged, but he could still make out the general shapes of clouds as he passed by. To him, it was merely another day. Although... he couldn't help congratulating himself for another successful dodge of his 'colleagues'. He smirked. The idiots were easy to lose - they were used to giving him a wide berth, so slipping away never was a problem. And now, he had the whole sky to himself...

The light was fading, and Dusty Relic was just getting started. She was journeying to her new home in Hoofington, and no matter how far she flew, she was still bursting with energy. Her mind was nearly bursting with ideas and theories for her newest archeological expedition in Everfree Forest. The sky seemed to encourage her with a tailwind, making gliding so much better. It had been almost 4 hours of flying, however, and she was being a bit passive aggressive at the clouds.
She went out of her way to make the sky pay. She stomped on ever cloud in her way, and her bag bobbed with her bounce back up. Relic tried to clutch her bag so it wouldn't open up, but at one point, she was a hoof swing to late, and her bag swung open. She caught almost everything, yet a very important object began to plummet down. It was a picture of an alicorn, but it was colorless, and as such she was not sure which it was. She dove down, coming to the realization that it was about the strike a pegasus flying under her.
She knew there was only three outcomes to this split second:
1. She retrieves the ruin in time, and goes on her merry little way.
2. The ruin bonks the poor pony in the head, and her ruin (and hopefully not the pegasus) are gone.
3. She gets the ruin, but gets in a straight collision with the stallion. Which would be quite awkward.
So Relic squinted her eyes, and prepared for the worst.

Unaware of the impending drama, Rapid Fire continued congratulating himself for his latest triumph over his colleagues.
AGH!
Rapid blacked out. His wings stopped moving, limp, and he began his plunge towards the earth. The portrait fell alongside him, although he was in no state to really care.
But just as suddenly as he was hit, he opened his eyes. The clouds blurred together as the ringing in his ears mixed with the scream of the wind. He blinked, but nothing came into focus. The headache kept getting in his way.
... Curses, a concussion. What hit me?! Adrenaline rushed through his body, and he took it gladly. He doubted the blow was hard enough for him fall unconscious, but he didn't want to take any chances.
Gritting his teeth, he forced his wings to open. Flying normally wasn't possible at the moment, but he could glide on a current. Luckily, one of his talents lay in flying steady. Although it was difficult to keep his wings spread out, he managed to slow his descent, gliding downwards instead of plummeting like a stone. At least his wings weren't hit instead.
As for steering... He shook his head, cursing out loud. Everything was moving too fast for him to register. He did notice, however, a blue shape up above him. Whether it was an enemy or... an annoying pegasus, it didn't matter to him. Neither did he care for the projectile that hit him, still falling no doubt. He had to save himself from this situation first, before he could turn his attention (and fury) towards anything else. Although... he couldn't deny that he wanted to rage at whoever was the cause of this mess.
The dizziness was creeping up on him, making it progressively harder to mentally focus. Despite this, he started gliding towards a low bank of clouds. He planned on landing there.

Possibility number 2. Ouch. But there was no time to waste, the pegasus would be fine, but her ruin would not. Relic remembered they would have drills on rescuing plummeting ponies, not actually on ponies, but on rubber balls. There were 4 steps to this drill, and she can almost remember the drill teacher yell them to the campers.
"ONE! FLY USING AN UPWARD GLIDE!"
Relic barrel rolled to her underbelly side and tilted her wing upwards, so that the tailwiind would take her upwards. She straightened her hooves, and curled her back.
"TWO! SECURE THE TARGET!"
She grabbed on to the picture in a bear hug. She grabbed it by a small crack, so it would be impossible to fall out of her hooves.
"AND THREE! FIND A SECURE AREA TO RECOVER!"
She did a complete u-turn and landed on a nearby cloud. Then coming to the realization that she forgot about the pegasus she hit. "Hayseed!" She cursed, flying towards the stallion. She looked at the pony, seeing his eyes were sort of fogged. "Oh, erm, uh... Sorry!" She said, doubting he would even be able to here her. She went under his shoulder, and helped him to the cloud.

Oh, he heard her alright. But her voice mixed with the ringing in his ears. Were there two pegasi though? And why did it HAVE to get harder to keep his wings up? Rapid narrowed his foggy eyes at the blue pegasus, half in concentration, half in anger. Then, he felt her support him under the shoulder. It certainly helped... but he bristled at the contact.
"Leave me alone," he slurred, "Go away! I can do this on my own!" He tried to shrug her off, but it threw him off balance a little as he glided, making him even MORE dizzy. So he let her be, for now. As he remembered the cloud bank, however, Rapid almost forgot about her presence. He couldn't focus anymore on anything but on the cloud he now staked everything on. If there was one thing he learned as a paramedic, it was to build up his sheer force of will, overcome the fatigue, and finish the task at hand.
He touched down on the cloud with his own four legs, but then they buckled underneath him. Slowly, he willed himself to stand. The cloud seemed to be shaking under his hooves, and he was getting sleepy.
"Have... to get to the house..." he managed to say. He felt a sudden wave of nausea, and he took in deep breaths. "Don't need help!"

Relic tried to keep her balance with the pony being difficult, but in the end she landed on the cloud.
"Don't need help!"
Relic sighed. "You're about to barf, you absolutely do need help." She said, looking at the ruin she recovered. "Aww look, there's blood all over it..." She looked at the picture more carefully. The ink that alicorn was painted on wasn't carved, but the rough edges behind it was. The bits of blood got on the ridges, making a red ink run all over it. She didn't even notice, but there was more then just a drawing on the stone. "This isn't a picture, it's a map!" She neighed gleefully. And what she said was true, the bit of blood revealed that this was no picture, it was a map of the Everfree Castle. "This must have been when it was built!"
Dusty almost completely forgot about the concussed stallion, and took a pen out of her bag. She blotted the ink around the ridges, to make the castle even more visible. She then took her own map (which she had for her expedition) and began jotting down various notes. After she finished, she put everything (including the ruin) in her bag. "Thanks!" Relic said sincerely, taking out a hoof. "I'm Dusty Relic. Can you stop being stubborn and let me help?
