Traditionally it is believed that Kelpies are the ponies who lived on the continent sunk by Entropy's great storms(See religion). When the storms sunk their continent, the ponies became, by the grace of Harmony, Hippocampi.
For many years Kelpies were the main authority to everything sea-related. Many sea vessels often recruited Kelpies to help them navigate safely throughout the ocean and the Kelpies have been known to help scuttled boats and even crashed air ships. Traditionally Kelpies were always cooperative with ponies and griffons, trading the deep sea resources ponies could not get to. One of the things Kelpies are most known for trading are whale fat and undersea minerals, as well as sunken treasures from many periods in History.
The current monarchs of the Kelpie Kingdom are King Tidal Wave and Queen Whirlpool, it is unknown exactly how long they've been ruling the Kelpie Kingdom.
The Kelpies, small as they are compared to other more vicious sea creatures, have been under the patronage of sea dragons, with Kelpies dividing their patronage between the powerful Leviathan, Kraken and Megalodon. The Whale Dragon, Octopus Dragon and Shark Dragon have helped guard and protect the Kingdom since its formation long ago. However, the three patrons have never been able to get along themselves, with Leviathan and Kraken being sworn enemies and their fights often requiring Megalodon to intervene before great damage is done to the Kelpies.
Post Equiterian Era
The Kelpies have not truly kept a record of their history until the unification of their Pantheon. But by oral tradition, the Post Equiterian Era for Kelpies was categorized by poverty, devastating and frequent monster attacks and absolutely no trade. It is said that at that point in time, Kelpies across the world were not aware of each other, or were not able to communicate between them and therefore trade between them was non-existent. This all changed when the practice of dragon worship began. With the dragons' protection, the Kelpies were able to build and sustain three large settlements, each of them with a patron dragon.
Communication was established between the Kelpie cities, monster attacks became few and far in between and trade began. Soon all fields of life for Kelpies improved drastically. It was at this time that King Tidal Wave ascended to the throne and the Kelpie cities united into one Kelpie Kingdom. Not long after that, the Kelpie Pantheon was unified and worship of all three dragons became the chief principle in all cities. Each of course, maintaining special honors for its patron dragon. Since then the Kelpie Kingdom has been known to live in great peace, not having to concern themselves with the wars above the ocean. They have been very necessary to ensure the safety of supplies and cargo all across the world and have been asked to settle along the coastlines of the continents to aid ships on their way, which they have done, expanding their kingdom even further.
Equestrian Era
In the Equestrian Era Kelpies have somewhat lost their necessity in the world. Griffon airship travel has become far more popular due to speed and safety. However, there are still many sea vessels traveling and exploring the seas and Kelpie trade is still the most profitable of all the major kingdoms as there are always treasures and minerals that can only be found under the seas. The return of Nightmare Moon was perhaps the event that influenced them the most, as the rising tides disrupted sea-travel and would not calm down for several days. But other than that the Kelpies have remained unaffected by events above the ocean.
Most recently however the shark-dragon Megalodon has disappeared entirely, leaving one city completely unattended and unprotected and worse yet – leaving without a mediator to calm the spirits of Leviathan and Kraken, threatening the entire Kelpie Kingdom.
