"Good. Over here." Ambrosios led Sylvia back into the darkness of the outer edges of the room. Here the light from the furnaces only dimly lit the surroundings, and depth perception became all the more important.
In front of the far wall were several large carts lined up in a row, no particular care having been taken to make sure they were straight. On the wall behind them was a large elevator, the kind with a metallic fence that stretched across it. One could guess it was used for moving the carts between floors.
The griffon stopped behind the first of the carts, resting a talon on it. "Go ahead and empty it in here." This cart, unlike the others, was almost full with what appeared to be more ash. There was easily several griffons-worth inside, but at this point it was all uniform and the same. Any distinction between them had been lost in the furnace.
"By the way, you wouldn't mind doing this for a few more hours, would you?"

Sylvia followed him to the carts and stopped for a moment as she looked at the ashes. She almost felt ashamed of having to put them together. She felt like maybe they should be put in an urn or something where the families would be able to keep the remains safe, or buried. Perhaps they got rid of them all together? She tried not to think of the process too much, and was relieved to be done with what she thought would be the last task...
And then his question hit her, and she turned to him, looking completely taken aback.
"I...I..." She really didn't want to do it...she had a hard enough time performing the task as it was. But if she didn't, she would be disrespecting their wishes. They did offer her a place to stay, and plenty of knowledge on their kind. The least she could do would be to repay the favor. Though, she was not looking forward to it.
"I guess I can...only for a few hours though. I don't think I can handle it for any longer than I have to." She murmured, this time wiping at her face without even trying to hide it. It was difficult. She didn't know these griffons, but she knew that each one had lived, just as she was alive now. And having to dispose of them like this was difficult. "Why do you need me to do this?"

"I don't. But I wanted to see what your answer would be."
The griffon turned, beginning to make his way back to the door. "I'll come back to get you in a few hours."

Sylvia frowned as he left her. She almost felt as if he meant to do this, meant to leave her here in this depressing room, and her emotions rose, her sadness slowly turning to anger. However, she did her best to regain her composure and let out a low growl to release said emotion, making her way over to the pile of bodies once more to continue the mentally grueling task.

After several mind-numbing hours of work, Ambrosios returned to the furnace room. The griffon didn't walk over to Sylvia right away, instead wandering over to the pile of vessels. He paced around it once, getting a good look at it from all angles, before finally walking back over to Sylvia.
"Looks like you've made some progress. The pile was a bit bigger when I left."

The red dragon looked clearly exhausted when he came back, worn out both physically and emotionally. She turned her attention to Ambrosios, a bit irritable at his lack of greeting. She just wanted to get out of this room and sleep. "Yeah...Yeah I did. I'm ready to stop." She murmured, finishing the last task. She wasn't sure if she could handle burning another body.

"Go and ahead and process that last vessel," Ambrosios said, nodding over towards a vessel laying by itself on the table. "Do a quick search and get its cremation started. Follow me when you've finished."
Ambrosios then walked off over to the collection of ash carts, leaving Sylvia to do as he had said. Searching the vessel, Sylvia would find that this one was actually carrying something of note. The item resembled a solid-gold jigsaw puzzle, albeit much, much larger. The object was odd to be sure, but there didn't seem to be anything particularly unnatural about it.

As she searched the vessel, Sylvia was caught off guard by the golden jigsaw puzzle. Being a dragon, well, it immediately caught her attention and she looked around to ask Ambrosios something, but he had already made his way to the carts. She would ask him about it later. For now, she placed the puzzle piece in a satchel at her side and then went to burn the last of the corpses, doing it quickly and efficiently since she had been doing so for the last hour.
When she placed the ashes in the cart for the last time, she panted a bit to cool her body down and she turned to Ambrosios, "I...I found something interesting on the last corpse...do you know what this is?" She asked as she took out the puzzle piece, holding it close as if it were precious to her.

Ambrosios walked over closer to Sylvia, leaning in to get a better look at the object in her hands. The griffon examined it closely for several seconds, before finally pulling back and shrugging. "Not sure what it is, though it doesn't seem of particular significance. You're free to keep it for yourself."
"Now, I need you to push that ash cart into the elevator," Ambrosios said, indicating towards one of the ash carts Sylvia had been filling. "Don't strain yourself," he continued, walking over towards the wall, "They're heavier than they look, though I speak from the context of someone smaller than yourself." The griffon pulled a lever on the wall, causing the metallic fence across the elevator to rattle open.

She was thankful that he allowed her to keep said golden puzzle piece. The dragon put it back into her satchel before grabbing hold of the carts and awkwardly pushing them forward, not used to walking on two legs to complete such a task.
It was heavier than she imagined, but the dragon had no problems pushing the cart to the elevator, her muscles showing beneath her red scales. Sylvia relied on her brawn mainly when hunting and carrying things back to her father's cave back when she was able, so relying on brawn was something she was used to.
She placed the cart into the elevator and backed away.

Ambrosios watched Sylvia push the ash cart into the elevator, curling the fingers of his talon around the lever as he thought to himself. "That's probably enough for today," he finally said, pulling the level back up before the metal fence slid back into place. "If anything I can show you the rest of the process some other day, but for now let's stop here."
The griffon led Sylvia back out of the dark furnace room, opening the doors to the exit and leading Sylvia up the stairs. "You're probably exhausted. Feel free to get yourself cleaned and get some rest. Or perhaps you'd want something to eat first. You did pass up on breakfast when I woke you up."

Sylvia nodded, "I could definitely use something to eat." Her stomach let out a low rumble to emphasize the point as she followed the griffon. She was physically and emotionally exhausted, and each step was agony for her as her muscles started to become sore.
"Could you have them bring something to my room? I'm so sore and tired, I don't know if I could make it to grab the food myself." she said apologetically as she developed a slight limp.

The griffon let out a deep breath through his nostrils, continuing forward for several seconds in silence. "I'll see," he said vaguely. "If you wouldn't like to be disturbed though, keep your door shut."
He then made a right at a branch in the hallway, leaving Sylvia on her own for the rest of the walk back to her room.

Sylvia nodded and crawled rather slowly to her room. She curled up, leaving the door open a crack for when her food would arrive. She rested her eyes for a moment, trying to drive away the images of the many corpses she burned out of her head.
To help her, she drew out the prize she received from her hard work and ran a claw over the golden surface of the puzzle piece. "I wonder what's so special about you..." She murmured softly. If there was one piece, perhaps others were out there as well?
She didn't have much time to think of it before she drifted away, her exhaustion taking over.
