She turned her eyes towards the lone griffon working in the furnace. She gave a small nod even though he did seem to ignore them, "It sounds like it can be a lonely job. I don't think I could handle it." She stated honestly as she sat on her haunches, watching the lone griffon work to cremate the bodies of his fallen brethren.

"Lonely, but important. All the work that goes into vessel retrieval means nothing if they aren't cremated."
"You're free to cremate one yourself if you'd like," he spoke, walking casually back to the pile of griffon corpses. It wasn't so much that Ambrosios thought she'd like to, but rather he wanted to see how she'd react. "Wouldn't be a bad idea to start getting used to vessels now that you're part of the organization. Pick your favorite and put it on the table."

She was taken aback by the offer, unsure whether she was being tested or not. She almost felt important...like this was some sort of initiation. The griffons seemed to really trust her to take on such an important task.
She was hesitant as she crawled towards the bodies of griffons. There were so many...She felt a tear roll down her cheek, and hoped that Ambrosios would not notice. It was the last thing her draconic pride would need. However, as she spotted the body of a young griffon, hear heart sank and the tears continued to stream down her face. She would not allow such a young being to deserve a cruel fate of being returned as an undead thrall.
Gingerly taking the corpse into her claws, she awkwardly made her way to the table, setting the body gently down. She had to take a moment to compose herself, blinking the tears away.

Ambrosios followed behind Sylvia, walking around to the opposite side of the table and grabbing a medium-sized bin. The griffon dragged it along the floor, around the table until it was next to Sylvia. "Now you need to strip it. Clothing, and any possessions you find that aren't exceptionally important go in here. Doubt you'll really find anything."
He had taken note of the tears running down the dragon's face, but wasn't going to say anything. Especially not half-way through the job.

She did as she was asked, once again taking the utmost care despite the claws she wielded seeming more for hunting and battling than removing clothing and items from a corpse. Sylvia gingerly set the items within the bin. Like Ambrosios said, she didn't find anything very important, but she had a feeling that some of the items were precious to the griffon child.
"Okay..." She didn't say much, not wanting her voice to crack during the process. She had to be strong. She had never felt so many emotions tugging at her before, and it was strange.

"Take it over to one of the empty compartments," the griffon said, nodding towards the furnace. There were two empty chambers in the row along the furnace, their gray interiors a stark contrast to the bright orange of the compartments around them. Each one had a small swinging door with a glass window, as well as its own crank and lever.
"Put the vessel inside, latch the door, and give the crank a full turn clockwise. Use the sliding tray if you have to; the interiors might still be hot."

The red dragon carefully picked up the body once more, the tears finally stopped falling. She awkwardly made her way to the furnace, placing the body gently inside. She could feel the heat, but it didn't bother her at all. No, the furnace wasn't nearly hot enough to affect her negatively.
She latched the door closed, blocking her view from the young griffon corpse inside. She turned the crank as he asked, wondering how he could remain so calm and collected in this room. Every bit of her wanted her to get out of there and break down into tears. But she carried on the task she was appointed.

The interior of the chamber lit up with a brilliant orange, slowly reaching the same hue as those around it as the flames inside grew warmer. "Now we wait."
The small glass window on the door offered a peek at the vessel being incinerated. The feathers and fur disintegrated rapidly, the charred skin and tissue soon falling apart as well. Ambrosios had his eyes locked on the spectacle, watching as the furnace did its work.
"Do you know anything about phoenixes?"

The red dragon watched as long as she could, but eventually she had to look away and take a deep, shaky breath. She scratched at the scales on her cheek, trying to hide the fact that she was wiping at the tears that stained her scales. As the furnace burned the corpse, she turned her eyes to Ambrosios as he spoke.
"I...no, I don't think I've heard of phoenixes." She replied quietly.

"They're interesting creatures," Ambrosios spoke, keeping his eyes on the furnace. "Before their death they're weak and feeble. Pathetic things, incapable of helping others let-alone themselves. Upon death they burst into flames, leaving behind a pile of ashes."
"But it's from these ashes that a new phoenix is born. The old, pathetic bird is reborn into something new and strong, with a new life ahead of it."
The feathers and tissue on the vessel had turned into ash by now, leaving behind bones that were also beginning to burn and weaken. Except for the skull. That always seemed to be the last thing to go.

"That's amazing." Sylvia whispered above the muffled sounds of the crackling flames. She tried to imagine such a creature, wondering how a thing could exist? "Why do you bring this up?" the dragon asked him, her tail curling around her legs to help her discomfort.

Ambrosios didn't respond for several seconds, trying to think of how he should answer. Finally he gave a shrug. "Being here made me think of it."
Now even the skull was beginning to deteriorate under the intense heat, cracking and falling apart into ash. After another half-a-minute, any sign of griffon within the chamber was completely gone. All that was left was ash and a few burnt, fragile fragments waiting to fall apart once you moved them.
"Turn the crank back counter-clockwise. Then wait a few seconds and pull the lever."

She gave a nod of understanding and let the image of the phoenix fill her mind while she did as he asked, turning the crank with ease. She waited a few moments like he asked and then grabbed the lever, taking a breath in before pulling it.

Simple, mechanical sounds could be heard within the chamber after Sylvia pulled the lever, but what exactly was happening was unclear. Meanwhile, Ambrosios walked over to pick up a large, elongated tool. It almost seemed like a rake or hoe of some sort, with a flat plate bent at a ninety degree angle fastened to the end.
"Now," he said, handing the tool to Sylvia, "Use this to get the ash into the receptacle. Once that's done, take it with you and follow me." Indeed, hanging on a rod on the front of each chamber was what looked like a small trough, designed specifically for catching ash being pulled out of the chamber. Once the chamber had been emptied, the container could be removed from the rod and carried.

She grasped the tool in her claws, almost ashamed of scraping the ashes of what remained of a living griffon into the trough-like container. She was very careful, almost afraid to get any ash upon the ground or anywhere else, taking the utmost care even with how awkward using a tool in her claws felt.
She eventually removed the container, retaining a tight grip on it, "O-okay, I got it."
