Hello. I'm new to this entire role playing thing, but I saw this site and felt like it would be fun. Here is the character I wish to submit:
Name: Dark Flare Gender: Male Age: Teen Species: Unicorn Pelt Color: Black Mane/Tail Color & Style: black with a red streak Eye Color: Violet Beginning Cutie Mark: A pen with a purple flame coming out the tip, it is also a fuse to a firework.
Residence: Darkflare wanders around Equestria, his home being a small cart he pulls himself, using his magic. It doubles as a firework shop. Occupation: Traveling firework maker Talents, Skills: Pyrotechnic, Storytelling Likes: Bladed Weapons Fire/Lightning Feline creatures and Wolves Practicing other types of magic Dramatic displays Winning Writing/Keeping a journal Dislikes: Being told he can’t do something Performing in front of people Pegasi for personal reasons Losing Ponies who can’t/won’t fend for themselves; incompetent ponies, even himself Ponies calling his journal a diary Creatures living in water
Character Personality: On the outside, Dark Flare is a moody and antisocial stallion. He does not like to say more than he needs to, and his physical features aren’t very inviting, so he often doesn’t need to speak more than what was common when selling his fireworks. However, if someone were to get to know this nomad, they would find that he is far more cheery and polite than he would seem.
He is interested in hand to hand combat. His favorite melee weapon is the sword, though he has never had proper training with it. He owns several knives: Foldable ones, sheathed ones, ones with ornate designs, ones with plain colors. He has never cut himself with a knife before, and considers himself adept in the use of one, though the real reason he never cuts himself is because he rarely does anything dangerous with them. He has often desired saving up to buy a sword, but then he sees another blade with an ornate design and, as with everything, in the moment of seeing something cool or desirable, he rushes in to buy it, and then he has to scrounge the last of his money in order to get food and firework making supplies.
He likes to express himself through his fireworks by making large and brilliant displays. He believes in the phrase “True art is an explosion.” He also enjoys expressing himself through his writing. As with his fireworks, he imagines epic tales where one unknown man, usually a projection of himself, faces great opposition and conquers it thus winning honor and admiration for himself, and while Dark Flare has never gotten a story published, he’s written down all his ideas in his journals.
Despite being empathetic, he is often very blunt when he speaks. Like his father, he knows when someone needs comforting words, something he’s not very good at, and when they need to be kicked in the flank. He prefers to kick rather than comfort, and he has never come across a person who he felt like comforting in the first place.
Bio: Dark Flare was born to a young couple in Canterlot. His father, Jack Frost, was a Unicorn in the Royal Guard, and his father met his mother, a pegasus named Star Powers, while on leave in Manehattan. His father was gruff, but he was very down to earth and easy going. He may not have been afraid to speak his mind, but he knew when to let go, and he was very empathetic.
Dark Flare's mother, however, was a bit more expectant. She was a romantic, and her expectations almost never could be met. She had fallen in love with the soldier merely because of the stories she read about a knight in shining armor going to save a kingdom and it's princess.
After moving to Canterlot with her newlywed husband, she saw the castle as her new home, and imagined one day the city would be attacked and she would be protected by her husband. The attack never came. She was brought to a small apartment complex where her husband lived. She was disappointed, but she knew it wasn't right to have expected to live in the castle.
One day, nearing the end of her pregnancy, she and her husband were witnesses to a bank robbery. Suffice it to say, Jack was able to surprise the robbers and disarm them with his ice magic. He was promoted and soon they were able to move into a bigger apartment, and Star was able to feel more like the princess she imagined.
Then she had Dark Flare. The little ray of sunshine made staying there easier, but only until after they came home from the hospital. From there, things only got worse. Jack was demoted after getting into a fight with another guard, and they had to move back into the smaller apartment, and Star had to get a part time job. Jack and Star were alright with this for a couple of years, but eventually Jack had to spend more time in the barracks, leaving her alone to tend to Dark Flare.
Not fitting in her idealized version of her life, Star became bitter. While Jack was away, she had to deal with the house and Dark Flare and her job, and when he was home, she would always find something wrong in the way Jack let Dark Flare do "whatever he wanted", even though Jack was merely playing with him.
Dark Flare’s mother controlled whatever he did. She never let him play with the few school kids who actually tried to friend him, and she would keep him almost constantly busy with school work and chores, sometimes even to the point of making him do extra credit work. Jack was rarely home to counter this, and when he tried to tell her that what she was doing was wrong, she'd say she was only doing what was best for Flare, and chastise Jack for never being home.
Dark Flare found whatever time he could to escape from his mother. When he couldn’t get out of the house, he would finish his homework and read. He liked books of epic tales where one guy would be faced with a large opposing force, and he would pull out his weapon (usually a sword or a bow) and defeated all of his enemies. He felt good when reading those types of stories. He felt the feelings that the characters had, the anger at a betrayal, death, or inconvenience. He felt the joy the characters felt when they defeated the enemy or the protagonists shared happy moments with each other. These feelings made him want to enter the story and perform great deeds for the good of others. That is when Dark Flare got into writing.
After imagining these stories in his head, and wanting to escape his reality, he turned to writing for comfort. He started keeping a journal in which he would write about his experiences that day, and the thoughts for the stories he had. He would write all about the mean ways his mother treated him, and how he liked his father more. He wrote various stories where he would run away from home and live in the forest. He knew he would never be able to live with himself if he did that to his father, however, and instead he thought about stories where someone would take him away in the night. Sometimes, the “kidnapper” would actually be his father, finally realizing that his mother was a horrible lady and escape her reaches in the night.
He did not like calling her a horrible lady. Whenever he caught himself writing about some ill fate befalling his mother, he would erase what he wrote. However, sometimes his mother was particularly unpleasant, and his anger wouldn’t subside until the following night, after he wrote another couple of pages in his journal, or he would write in pen somedays and he hated tearing pages out of books, so he left them in there, knowing she wouldn’t read the journal.
He would go walking around Canterlot when his mom had to work later than usual. He often found himself in front of a small bookstore. He didn't go inside at first, but one day he hid in there from his mother. He quickly moved to the section that was well away from the front of the store. He hid there for a long time before he moved again. As he was about to leave something caught his eye. It was a large book with a bright flashy cover. He picked it up and it was a book on making fireworks. He was so intrigued by this book and the flashy fireworks it displayed, that he decided to buy the book using the allowance his father gave him, something he hid from his mother.
He stuck the book into the bottom of his saddlebags and faced the lecture from his mother before locking himself in his room under the pretense of homework. He read the book whenever he could, and eventually he tried making the fireworks himself. It took a while to gather the supplies using his allowance to buy the stuff that he couldn’t find in the trash or in the house. At first it was just to make them and set them off, but he had a thought. This thought made his desire to make the fireworks much more intense, and he set himself on a mission.
One day, after a week of Jack being gone because of various tasks the Guard was assigned, Jack came home to Star's bags being packed. She had a massive fight with Dark Flare the night before. While he was at school, she was able to get off early and clean the house. She went inside Dark Flare’s room and while she was cleaning it, she found Dark Flare’s journal. She read the journal, and it was filled Dark Flare’s contempt towards how she treated him. Then she found the fireworks in the closet and was angry because she noticed things disappearing from the kitchen and now she knew they were being used to create explosives in her own house.
When he came home, she confronted him about the hurtful things she read, and the fact that he was making fireworks inside the house. After a brief argument Dark Flare ran away. He walked through the town for a while before going back home. He arrived home to find his mother had started burning his journal. He ran up and took back what remained of his torn up journal, tears streaming down his face. He started yelling at Star, and in a fit of rage he kicked one of his fireworks, which were beside his mother as well, and it fell into the fireplace. The firework went off and set fire to the living room. The fire was quickly put out, but the couch and the curtains were torched beyond being salvageable.
So Star powers left to go back to her parents’ home in Cloudsdale. Jack Frost was able to get some time off, at which point he and Darkflare moved into a smaller apartment, after paying off the damages for the living room. A few years passed and Jack was able to get promoted again and Dark Flare was old enough to handle being home alone when Jack couldn’t be there, which didn’t happen so often anymore but was never unavoidable.
Unfortunately, a group of young pegasi had started to bully Dark Flare at school. Dark Flare endured this for a while, but then he started fighting back. The school didn’t help at all, taking the pegasi’s side because they were sons of high ranking officials. Jack, however, was able to talk to the principal, an old friend, and get the kids into trouble. He told Dark Flare that he couldn’t go around fighting these kids, and while the insults continued, Dark Flare obeyed and took them.
The attacks accelerated after a threat was made on Canterlot and Jack had to stay in the barracks more often. A week before the Royal Wedding, Jack was told he had to stay in the barracks until the wedding was over, and Dark Flare was left alone in the apartment. On the day of the wedding, school was out, and Dark Flare was heading over to the castle with all the other ponies that were invited.
On his way there, he was attacked by the same group of pegasi. Dark Flare was sick and tired of all their insults, however, and they were unprepared for the torrent of rage he finally unleashed on them. They all went down, but at the cost of Dark Flare injuring his right foreleg and his left hind leg. They weren’t very serious, but as he started towards the castle again he wasn’t able to walk as quickly.
Just before he made it to the gate, there was a bright flash of green light to his right. He was blinded momentarily, and he felt something hard and smooth connect with his face, sending him sprawling to the ground. As his vision returned, Dark Flare saw a black insect-like creature standing over him, his fangs snapping menacingly.
The creature was knocked off of him by a large white rock. Sitting up in surprise, Dark Flare saw that the rock was actually a block of ice, and his father charged in from the other direction. He saw his son get attacked from his position on the wall, and rushed to his aid. More of those creatures showed up and Jack forced Dark Flare to run away, while he fended off the monsters. They came across the group of pegasi Dark Flare beat up, running from another hoard of the creatures.
Jack got rid of them and they all ran away. They ran into an alleyway to hide, but unfortunately for them, there was a hoard waiting for them on the other side. The hoard bore down on their group like wasps, the pegasi in front and Jack and Dark Flare in back. The pegasi, finally realizing they could fly, soared into the sky, blocking Jack’s line of sight and keeping him from attacking the hoard. One of them took longer than the others, and a changeling, as Jack called them, lunged at him. He was able to get out of the way, but behind him was Jack, whose neck was right where the changeling’s fangs were about to strike the pegasus in the foreleg.
Dark Flare saw the changeling bite his father’s throat. His first emotion was confusion at what just happened, but that gave way to a terrible rage. His horn glowed deep red, as opposed to the light red in his hair. The changeling was then consumed by a black flame, surprising the changelings as well as Dark Flare. Then, a wave of pink light washed over them all, and the changelings were thrown up and away from Dark Flare before he could be attacked. He watched as his father slipped away, and he was eventually found crying over the body. He was taken back to his home, where the guards talked about sending a letter to his mother, so she can come and take him.
Dark Flare, unable to bear such torment again, ran away from Canterlot. He traveled into the mountains with only his most precious possessions: His book on firework making, his new journal, and a picture of him and his father. He survived in the mountains using the skills his father had taught him. He also learned that he was adept at fire magic, while never being able to replicate the spell he used on the changeling, and he was able to find ingredients for his fireworks. He eventually came down and was able to sell his fireworks and buy a small carriage, like the one he saw some performer name Trixie use when she came into Canterlot once, except smaller, and it didn’t fold out to make a stage. Here, he is able to make his fireworks more efficiently and he now had a traveling home. With no family or friends, he moves from town to town, selling his fireworks and putting on shows for a profit.
