Name: Lucky Charm
Gender: Stallion
Age: Young adult
Species: Pegasus pony (wind)
Pelt Color: Green
Mane/Tail Color & Style: Brown fading to bright orange (kind of looks like he dyed it orange then let it grow out, but it actually just grows like that). Mane is kept at medium length, but tail grows fairly long and is generally straight, but unkempt.
Eye Color: Bright orange
Cutie Mark: A rainbow backlit with a bright, golden light like a sunrise, with a set of hoofprints seemingly leading under the rainbow and toward the light.
Details: Lucky Charm is a green Pegasus stallion, about average in height or a little on the tall side. His build is deceptively slim but fit, with the look of a pony who does a lot of running. His shorn fetlocks are the same orange shade as his eyes and the tips of his hair. The upper half of Lucky’s left ear is missing, looking like it was bitten or torn off by some beast. His other ear has an odd earring that appears to be made of a scorpion tail. He sports a fresh-looking scar on the right side of his face, running from his cheek just below his eye down across the jaw.
Lucky is rarely seen without his weathered, brown jacket, itself adorned with several pockets. He also wears a variety of odds and ends seemingly picked up from every corner of the world, such as an elegant, silver brooch on the front of the jacket, a steel bracer partially concealed under the left sleeve, a necklace of rune stones slung around his neck and so on. The end of a thin scar along the bottom of his barrel sometimes pokes out past the hem of the jacket. Residence: Wanderer
Occupation: Traveler, storyteller; no permanent occupation, takes whatever part-time jobs are available
Talents, Skills: Many. Lucky is a dabbler and a very fast learner – in fact, it‘s his special talent. He picks up the basics of a new skill quickly, but rarely pursues it further once he’s at least competent, saying that that’s usually when it gets difficult and boring. The end result is something of a jack-of-all-trades, with a great number of skills and supreme adaptability, but no specialization.
Of particular note, he is a quick, agile flier; a capable fighter when backed into a corner; adept at running and hiding (hence why he has to be backed into a corner to fight); experienced at surviving in the wilderness; quick to study, both from books and from teachers; charming (if a bit corny) when he wants to be; and well-versed in history, legend, myth and lore, mostly from stories he’s heard or read along his many journeys; a polyglot with a knack for picking up new languages and a highly capable improviser.
Likes: Learning new skills; stories; making friends; jokes; pie (especially apple); exploring; adventure; souvenirs; telling tales; watching interesting things happen; music; traveling; seeing sights; archaeology (as a hobby); camping; various skills and hobbies he’s picked up.
Dislikes: Staying in one place too long; responsibility; stuffy people; boredom; arguments; fighting; taking orders; being tied down; unpleasant confrontations.
Character Personality: First and foremost, Lucky Charm is cheerful, laid-back and friendly. He has a natural curiosity and no inhibition when it comes to walking up to a random pony and asking how they got their coat like that, where they got the spiffy hat or why the sky is lighting up like that. Bonus points if he can find out himself, without asking – after all, he reasons, there’s probably a story behind it. He believes that there’s an adventure around every corner just waiting to be had.
Lucky loves stories. Old stories, new stories, stories in books, stories told, stories made, stories he can be a part of – he has a whole personal philosophy about how all the world is made up of the stories of those who live in it, and he’s just as happy to be a main character as he is to just watch someone else or back them up. This is part of the reason he travels so much, searching for stories. Plus, if he can possibly find a way to work in a metaphor about stories or journeys into any given conversation, he will.
This Pegasus is usually thoughtful and patient by nature, but once he gets excited (for just about any reason) instinct, intuition and “seems like a good idea” take over. Likewise, while he has little problem accepting help, given a choice between seeking it out and doing things himself he’ll take option B anytime it isn’t obviously impossible or outright dangerous. Sometimes even then. To go for help as a first resort the situation has to be well outside his area of expertise and obviously something he won’t just pick up as he goes along.
He’s a free spirit and doesn’t like being told what to do unless he’s listening by choice. Likewise he dislikes staying in one place for very long, and once his hooves start to itch (his way of saying he’s tired of sitting around) he’ll say his goodbyes, pack up his few belongings and leave town. Anything that threatens to tie him down, including developing responsibilities, quickly triggers a panic alert in his head. Despite this, and despite how he’d rather avoid any conflict or fight if he can, he will take a stand when he feels he’s really needed.
Unusual for a Pegasus, Lucky prefers to walk wherever he’s going, even if it takes days or weeks, compromising only if he’s really in a hurry. He uses this time to enjoy the journey, believing firmly that it’s more important than the destination and that the road always has something new to teach him.
Lucky Charm has a passion for adventure and for learning new things. He’s the type of pony who, upon seeing a poster advertising swimming classes, will report promptly and cheerfully to every class for weeks on end until he’s satisfied he’s learned to swim, but has no real interest in taking it any further. Any time he tries to do continue studying he quickly finds that actually getting good at things takes a lot more effort and usually isn’t nearly as interesting. Whether this is because quickly learning the basics of even a complicated skill is his special talent or just because he has a weird attention span, even he doesn’t know.
Lately, since learning of Ponyville’s destruction at the start of the Blood War, Lucky’s customary smile has been dropping more and more. Evidently shaken by the thought of so much death, especially as some of the residents were old friends of his, he has steadily been growing less talkative and more morose, though he still makes an effort to at least seem cheerful and brushes off any accusations to the contrary, saying he was just feeling thoughtful.
Bio: Lucky was born and raised in an inn about an hour’s trot north of Ponyville. His parents, both Pegasi, owned and ran the place for years while he from a young age enjoyed exploring the forest and plains around the inn or the nearby village where he went to school. Eventually, though, he reached his teen years and found he had seen practically everything the area around had to offer him. Between that and his involvement in the “Great Banana Slug Incident” making him something of an equus non grata he ended up saying his goodbyes for the first time (certainly not the last) and taking off to explore Equestria.
That was almost a decade ago and he hasn’t settled down since. Lucky Charm has been seen in practically every population center in Equestria at one point or another and even in the lands well beyond its borders, from the Griffon Empire to the Zebra Territories and all the way out to the Northern Barrens. Never staying in one place for more than a handful of months, he’s made it his mission to seek out stories, skills and souvenirs from every corner of the world. He’s also run into (and away from) more than his fair share of dangers, including changeling hives, manticore nests, pirate ships and even a dragon. That last one he admits he just got lucky with – she wasn’t hungry that day.
Eventually Lucky decided to return to his parents’ inn and Ponyville to see the Summer Sun festival on the night of Nightmare Moon’s return. After the memorable events of the following day, and after seeing how nopony seemed bothered about the Great Banana Slug Incident anymore, he took to returning there in between journeys, to the town he’d called home growing up. After all, not only did it have a friendly, familiar population and crisp, clean, country air, but there was always something fun and interesting going on. Soon enough it became like a second home to him, after the road he loved so… right up until he returned to find Ponyville in ruins, crawling with Diamond Dogs. Despite everything else he’d been through, this was clearly the most traumatic event of his life.
In the recent months, with tension and conflict hanging in the air, he’s been more subdued than usual. Despite this, though, and despite everything else that’s going on, he is determined to continue his travels, searching for stories and adventures and maybe – just maybe – a way to give the story they’re all in now a happy ending. And if that keeps him from having to think about ‘recent events,’ so much the better.
Lucky's curious nature and habit of taking odd jobs has landed him in trouble again; after barely surviving an encounter with a trio of dangerous thugs in Royal Rocks he was fooled into working for a corrupt griffon politician, nearly sacrificed for a game he still doesn't understand. To survive he has had to join a mysterious cult with very little information about its nature and a promise that he will be called to serve somehow. Now he has returned to Equestria to aid in the reconstruction of Canterlot and hopefully find a way to better the lives of those displaced by the war.
