Note: This thread takes place immediately after The Hive
Starling had just finished his report to Princess Luna. The mission was not an easy one, but they got it done. He was able to create a tentative alliance with the Changelings and they emerged unscathed for the most part. With the exception of Gilda. He left Luna's chambers respectfully by walking backwards, making sure to face her before closing the doors and turning around, just to come snout to snout with another Princess.
"Princess Cadence." The stallion said, giving the alicorn a respectful bow, she immediately pulled him up with her hoof.
"I can't believe you Starling." She said reproachfully, "After everything she did to me, there was no excuse."
"Princess..." Starling tried to say, but was cut off viciously.
"No, I don't want to hear it, Starling. Did you think I was going to be happy? She almost ruined my life, you of all people should know how horrible what she did to me was. I'm... I'm so disappointed in you..." She said, Starling caught her eyes tearing but she turned before she could start crying and sped off.
Shining Armor was standing some distance behind her, he looked at Starling in a mixture of curiosity and confusion.
"I just don't understand," The Royal Guard Captain said, "How you can be so close to someone and then go off and do something like this. Cadence always looked up to you and you burned her." Starling again tried to talk but was again cut off, "I know where you were coming from, I'm sure Princess Luna and Celestia would agree with you. I'm pretty sure that if I wasn't personally involved, I probably would too. But way to put the mission first Starling, so long as Chrysalis gets to walk free."
Starling stood there in the corridor for a while, not sure of what to do. He had his orders, he was to pack up his things and go to the Changeling Hive to ensure the peace was being maintained and to supervise the intelligence delivering. Changelings could not be trusted after all.
When he arrived to the Hive Chrysalis greeted him herself, now not shivering and frightful but powerful and confident.
"Do I make a good coward?" She asked, a hoof on Starling's chin.
"Good enough to fool even me." Starling said with a hint of sarcasm, "Is the second hive ready?"
"Yes, now that we're in peace with Equestria, I'm sure we'll have a third one in no time. If you can keep up that is." The Changeling queen grinned at him.
"Don't you doubt it." He looked up at the hive, previously looking like a complete wreck, but now molded back into perfection, "It looked very convincing, sometimes even I'm surprised by how good you are at deception, Chrysalis."
The queen looked flattered, even going so far as to blush a bit, "Coming from a master like you, I'll take that as the highest praise."
