Taking the bow in one hand and Baxter's arm in the other, Ice Fang dragged him through the Diamond Dog mob's jeers and taunts, some even threw garbage at the naked Winter Wolf as he passed them. Ice Fang ignored them all, roughly pulling Baxter behind him, making sure to stop several time so Baxter could see what he had caused, before proceeding on into the library. Instead of showing Baxter in through the door, he literally tossed him in through the window, entering after him.
"Maxime, Sammie, you were wonderful, and I'd really love it if you two joined me tomorrow, you helped a lot in the fight, and there's no way I'm letting you stay in the rear, even if I have to pound it into Malachite. But for now, I've got uh, business to attend to with my friend here, so I'm going to have to ask you to leave alright?" The wolf said quickly. The two females nodded gratefully and left, looking rather pitifully at Baxter. Closing and locking the library door behind him, Ice Fang dragged Baxter up the stairs to the second floor, where he sat him on his bed.
The Winter Wolf began nervously pacing around, "Man Bax, did you get in it big time. Hopefully these guys won't come in and try to gut you in the middle of the night now. But that guard that got you told everyone exactly how you felt about their whole race, and then you pop up with that bow, man Bax... I can't stop them from punishing you tomorrow. Even though it looks like you got your just desserts anyway." He explained quickly.
"I'll convince them to just whip you or something, I can do that. But you gotta be careful, when this spreads, every Diamond Dog in the army is going to have their eye on your back and you gotta tip toe carefully you hear? Gotta keep you on my leash or they'll eat you alive. You understand what I'm telling you?"
Ice Fang took a long break after he finished speaking, then turning back to his friend and asking, "Can you explain everything that happened since I left the cider place today?"

Baxter was silent as Ice Fang dragged him through the crowd, back to the library. He could hardly feel the garbage the dogs were pelting at him. His mind was in another place. He was brought back to reality by Ice Fang tossing him through the library window. He landed with a groan, the fall not helping his already sore and injured body any. Ice Fang soon had asked the girls to leave, dragging Baxter upstairs once they were gone. There Baxter was put on a bed, not sure what to expect next.
He was surprised, though, by Ice Fang's words, and his tone. He wasn't mad? He had just yelled at Baxter in front of the entire mob, smacked him across the face. Why wasn't he-... unless it was just an act. Baxter let out a sigh of relief as the idea clicked in his head. He was still upset over what he had caused, but knowing Ice Fang didn't hate him did make him feel a lot better. And he was more than thankful that Ice Fang was going to help him from being torn apart by the dogs. Being whipped wasn't going to be a picnic, but Baxter had endured a lot over the last several hours, and anything was better than death.
Baxter nodded solemnly at Ice Fang's warning, showing that he understood exactly what the other wolf had told him. That stupid guard had turned every diamond dog against him, and he was sure they wouldn't hesitate to do their worst to him if they got the chance.
When Ice Fang finally asked Baxter to recall everything that had happened since the two separated, he was happy to oblige, especially since he now had plenty of time to do it. He told the other wolf everything: the exchange with the guard close to the bridge, how he got each of the chess pieces, how they continued to get heavier but still made him want to find the others, everything up until he had finally reunited with Ice Fang minutes ago and every important detail he could remember.
"Guess that's what I get for being sociable," Baxter said bitterly. "If I'd just kept to myself the entire night none of this would have ever happened."

Ice Fang was examining the bow with great care as Baxter spoke, listening to every little detail in his story. "I'll be honest, Bax, you made a mistake when you took that rook from that Diamond Dog. You should have come get me right away. Of course it'd look suspicious, you saying all you did about Diamond Dogs and then going off sneaking from building to building in the middle of the night with powerful magical items hidden on your body. I gotta say you're lucky that guard didn't just kill you and feed you to the ferals." Not that what Baxter went through was a day in the sun, but it sure was better than being killed.
"Looks like your whole night was a series of one mistake after another. That's beneath you Bax. But I feel like it's partly my fault too. I left you when you were upset and confused. I should've stuck around more." He confessed, "Of course, neither of us could have imagined any of this happening. I just wish you'd have told me something before it was too late."
He took the Winter Wolf's arm again and led him to the shower, "Get in there and wash yourself, the water here works, kind of. I'll give you back your bow when we get to Fillydelphia. Just do me a favor and don't talk to anyone until we get there. Oh, and one more thing." Ice Fang said, reaching over to something Baxter couldn't see before slapping it on him, a collar. "Like I said, gotta have you on my leash for now. Sorry about this buddy."

Baxter hung his head as Ice Fang spoke. He was right. The archer's big mistake had been trying to take the rook in the first place. From there the pieces got a grip on his actions, influencing everything he did. It was easy to have regrets about the entire situation. Too easy. Baxter regretted nearly everything that had occurred that evening.
The archer let Ice Fang lead him to the shower, but was surprised to find the other wolf clamping something around his neck. Baxter only had to feel the object for a few moments to realize what it was: a collar. He looked over at Ice Fang, showing his discontent but not saying anything. This was the ultimate humiliation: to have a literal collar strapped on him and kept in close tow of someone else. Baxter didn't put up a fight over it, though. He was in no position to be challenging Ice Fang after all he'd done for him. The wolf simply turned away, stepping into the shower and closing the curtain behind him.
The water was lukewarm, and came out in inconsistent spurts. But it felt good against his dirty and aching body. He had just gone through a lot and was glad it was all finally over. At least for now.
