This morning was just like every morning. Nightgazer woke up in the comfort of his sleeping bag, the warmth enveloping his body. After laying still for no less then twenty minutes, he forced his body to get up and pack his things. After about a fifteen minute walk, he had made it to Ponyville. There were many ponies trotting around happily, giggling and talking amongst each other. They seem very cheerful, making Nightgazer feel misplaced as always. He hated how they could live such carefree lives without a worry in the world. How they didn’t even realize how fortunate they were. The only things they seemed to care about were petty little matters like how their mane looked or that they were bored. That’s what set Nightgazer off the most. They weren’t content. No matter how great they had it, they were never satisfied. After seeing so many smiling faces, Nightgazer decided on just looking around for a bit, then moving on. He didn’t want to spend too much time here.
Walking over to the market, he quickly found it didn’t have much of interest. Anything he would actually want, like food, was pretty expensive. He could buy it for cheaper elsewhere. It was a pointless luxury, though. He was fine with grass, despite its lack of flavor compared to the various fruits they sold here. He was tired, however and could really use something sweet.
“Maybe just one apple wouldn’t hurt,” he said to himself.
It was worth the two bits he spent. This had to be one of the sweetest apples he ever tasted. He felt re energized after eating it, ready to run. Ready to fly. Fly… Yes, that sounded like a good idea right now. Maybe what he needed to get into higher spirits was to touch the clouds again. Soaring high in the sky was always rejuvenating. Without a second hesitation he took off, climbing higher and higher. Nothing could ever match the feeling of the wind whizzing past your face, your wings giving you more and more speed as you zipped by. Nothing else mattered. It was just you and an endless expanse of the blue.
By the time he decided to land back down on the ground, it was already midday. He spent hours up there and he didn’t regret it at all. After all that, he couldn’t help but feel much better. Still, it wasn’t enough to bring a smile to his face. That would take much more. Whereas everypony else gave out smiles easily, his were extremely rare to come by. He always kept a straight face that others considered glum. It wasn’t that he was always sad, he just felt more numb than anything else, devoid of most emotion. Ponies pitied him. They looked down on him wondering what could have happened to him to separate him from the rest of the world. It was a memory he didn’t like reliving, therefore he decided not to repeat it to anypony. Whenever somepony asked him why he was always so unhappy or why he lacked a cutie mark, he would just brush them off saying “It’s a long story,” or something like that.
More wandering the streets made him believe more and more that he didn’t belong here. All the ponies in the town were with someone else, happily talking. No pony was alone. No pony but him. He was okay with that, though. Nightgazer had always preferred to be alone. Other ponies either hindered him or just simply annoyed him. Mostly the latter. He tried not to think about it for the moment. He pushed all thoughts out of his mind and continued on through Ponyville, ignoring the hunger beginning to build in his stomach.
