Such an eventful day had taken its toll on Fluttershy, her nerves still on alert from nearly being flattened earlier that afternoon. The softest of sighs left the mare as the door cushioned itself into its frame behind her, quite relieved to be back in the comfort of her own home once again. A chirp nestled itself on her ears, her vision flicking up to the windowsill to spy a friendly Bluejay perched atop it. At least her animal companions were something she could handle. Not that Ponyville was a rough town - it was quite quiet, usually - but staying out of the company of other ponies for a while didn't seem like a bad idea.
"How is your voice today, mister bluejay?" Fluttershy cooed softly, briefly trotting over to look over the bird more closely. He looked perfectly fine from the outside, but the pastel-toned pegasus knew he had been running into trouble when singing lately. She talked to him often, after all. Seemingly in response to her question, the bird chirped again, though in a much more melodious manner this time. The sound put a warm smile on her face - nothing was as soothing as bird song to her ears. And his tone was getting better!
Her thoughts were distracted again, however, as a foot thumped behind her. Turning to spy the culprit of such an impatient noise, the mare couldn't help but sigh. Angel was staring at her with an unimpressed expression, clearly waiting for something. Fluttershy wasn't entire sure what he was after, but gave him a gentle nuzzle all the same. "Oh, you'll be okay, Angel dear. Just relax for now."

Three thumps on her door came one after another, and a voice called out, "Fluttershy?" She'd recognize that voice, it was Ranger. Ranger has been careful to avoid her since the kiss incident, at least until he was sure how he felt. He did like Fluttershy a lot, and he did feel good when he was with her. He felt extremely guilty for avoiding her for so long. They really bonded in the Rainlock Mansion and it was unfriendly of him to do it.
Though if he had to be honest with himself, after Corsair, he wasn't sure he wanted anyone to be around him. He half thought to send Sprite back to his parents in Canterlot... And now Ruby was dead too, and yet here he was, about to come to Fluttershy and see if she still felt that way. He gave her the Starlight Rose last time he came, he hoped she would be wearing it still. It would be a good sign.
Ranger sighed, he promised her he'd protect everyone, yet he already failed that twice. Not anymore though, with the new traps along the Everfree border, nothing could come out of there save for a dragon or a hydra. He was glad he at least bothered to bathe before he came, and put on his better cloak. His hooves were bandaged from the damage the sharp scales of the Salamander had caused them, but the bandages were neat and clean, and hopefully Fluttershy wouldn't fuss over them too much. He hoped.

The mare almost jumped out of her skin at the noise, both her and Angel's eyes flicking up to stare at the door for a moment. Needless to say, she hadn't been expecting any visitors today, not even Twilight, but... she knew that voice. A colt's voice. Silently, the pony and her bunny shared a glance. Angel knew it too - Ranger.
With the turmoil of the past few weeks, Fluttershy had almost forgotten about all the apprehension and anxiety surrounding their last encounter. It had been a little while since she'd seen his face, now... admittedly the mare had believed he was avoiding her or something at first, but apparently that wasn't the case. Or at least, he had changed his mind. A very small part of her had almost been glad - if they didn't speak, she wouldn't have to face whatever consequence lay in wait, even if that did mean Ranger truly hated her.
The knot in her stomach tightened as she realised she hadn't answered him yet. What should she do?! Fluttershy could just as easily pretend she wasn't home yet, hide somewhere and just wait for him to go away... it would definitely be the most peaceful option... oh, but then, if Ranger had come all this way on friendly terms, he'd be so disheartened and...
Another shared glance with her beloved pet reassured the pegasus of the right choice to make, a soft intake of breath just about audible.
"I-I'm here, hold on..." She called softly, hoping her voice would just about carry through the closed door. Mentally preparing herself for every possible scenario she could think of, Fluttershy reopened the door. She couldn't quite look at him properly, keeping her vision slightly lowered. "Um... hello again."

"Hi, Fluttershy, may I come in?" Ranger asked, crouching down a bit and lowering his head to catch her gaze. He could only hope she wasn't too angry with him for being so distant lately, but the only way he'd find out was to talk to her, and boy he needed to talk to her.
"I'm sorry I've been so distant... you probably heard about what's going on, and I just... I guess, I felt like I disappointed everypony, I still do. I'm Ranger, I'm here to keep all of my friends safe, but I failed. I was ashamed, I was afraid, but I was wrong. I will keep everypony safe, I may not succeed every time, but I won't stop trying to be better. I have nothing to be ashamed of, and it was stupid of me to think you'd judge me like that. Please, can we talk?"

Oh Celestia, he was really here and now he was talking and... and... Fluttershy was lost for words, only daring to glance at the colt before returning her gaze to her own hooves. What exactly was he here for? She... she didn't hate him for not talking to her - how could she? - and of course she'd caught wind of, well, recent events... maybe if they just talked, things would be okay. Just talking.
"... Ranger, I, um..." She began. Celestia, she just couldn't find the words. What was she even trying to say? The colt himself just seemed to be rambling, sort of, and she couldn't really answer him properly. What was he looking for? Comfort, or just to be able to talk to her again? She... she just didn't really know how to react.
Shuffling her hooves, Fluttershy stepped back a little bit, even if only to allow him enough space to actually move. A cautious glance was shared between the pegasus and her loyal, if distrusting, pet. Angel was still unhappy with the colt for leaving it so long. A scowl across his face and bunny arms crossed, not even a soft cooing from Fluttershy could soothe his distaste. The mare sighed gently, trying to simply ignore the rabbit's glaring for now. "What do you want to talk about?"

"Look, Fluttershy, I'm sorry I've been avoiding you." Ranger apologized again, "It's just, well, you caught me by surprise. I never even thought about, you know, love until you... did that thing. I didn't know how to handle it." The woods pony began explaining, "But... I know it's something I'd like, even if I was a bit scared before. I know there's all sorts of things happening now, but you're an amazing friend and I like you a lot. So if you, you know, still want to be more than friends, I'd be very happy to."
After finishing his torrent of sentences, Ranger held his breath and closed his eyes, chewing on his lower lip as he awaited an answer. Give him a dragon and he's the bravest pony there is, tell him to tell a filly he likes her and he becomes a yellow-belly chicken (the yellow belly chicken does not seem to exist, but it is claimed that they're just so afraid that they always hide).

"I... well, um..."
Well... this was unexpected. She never would have dreamed that Ranger might like her the way she did him - of course, the whole not-talking stint had backed up that thought. Honestly, the mare had no clue what to say to him - here he was, having travelled out of his way to see her, and now she could barely speak? "I-I mean, I would..."
Angel, however, was not so timid. Bounding before Fluttershy, he let out a squeak of disapproval, arms still folded. Regardless of Ranger's reputation, the fluff-ball wasn't impressed with the way he had treated her recently - not one jot. Despite a soft pleading from Fluttershy, the bunny kept his eyes firmly on the colt. If he wanted to start seeing her, he'd have to live up to Angel's expectations. Another squeak accompanied an "Angel, please..." from the mare, Fluttershy trying to keep him from turning Ranger away. He was just a bunny, sure, but Angel could be a force to be reckoned with in the right situation.
"Don't mind him." She whispered, sending Ranger a quick, weak smile.

"The little titan only wants to look out for you. Isn't that right Angel?" Ranger asked with a grin, "What if I promise I'll never be such a confused silly colt again? And I'll also drop by to give you some treats from time to time, would that be good?" He asked, still burning inside from the desire to know Fluttershy's answer.
"So, about what we were talking about..." He brought the subject matter back to hoof and looked at her, removing his mask so as she could see his face, and to show her that he trusted her. He also made a point of lowering his hood so his entire head could be seen. That was sure to get Angel a bit more trusting wouldn't it?
