The proud Pegasus marched effortlessly despite the long distance and time elapsing since the beginning of his companion and his journey. Percheron enjoyed the opportunity for once to walk a long route, instead of taking to the air. It was a refreshing change of pace, that was for certain.
On land, it took him hours to get halfway, on air, he'd have been there and back again twice. Naturally, he was enjoying Ace's company, and was more than happy to humor the colt with some stories from his time in the army and the Stars.
After finishing a long explanation of how he won his most recent dog-fighting tournament, Percheron went silent again, enjoying the immersing experience of hiking outdoors. He was lucky to have found Ace so easily, after all, he expected to spend hours in Canterlot looking for half-intelligent unicorns to recruit.
"It's been so long since I took a walk through the woods like this." He finally spoke again to Ace, "It is so relaxing."

As Ace made the journey one pace at a time, he couldn't help but notice that if it weren't for his training he would've had to stop long ago. Even so, the pair had been walking for hours and he could still feel fatigue starting to set in. Of course the young stallion push this to the back of his mind refusing to be the reason for them stopping, besides the stories did help distract from his tired limbs.
The unicorn smiled warmly at the conclusion of another heroic tale. Percheron's stories of his feats in battle were beyond exciting, this was a true battle-proven war pony in front of him.
Ace inhaled deeply, taking in the crisp woodland air "Yeah, I haven't taken a trip like this since I was a colt," though he left out that the trip had been in a carriage instead of on foot, "I haven't been this relaxed in a long time."

Percheron maintained the quiet pleasantness for a while, before a racket heralded the coming of something large. Getting in a combat stance, Percheron gasped as a Manticore stomped right towards him.
"Ace!" He warned, launching to the air, as the monster roared upon noticing them. Even to Percheron it seemed strange, what would a Manticore be doing so far away from Everfree? The Manticore roared again loudly, its body clenching before it took off towards Ace.
Percheron's quick reflexes allowed him to get the drop on her, and with a kick its attack was halted, it snarled angrily at the Pegasus out of its reach.
"Alright Ace, show me what you're made of, I'm right here if you get in trouble." Percheron smiled at Ace confidently, after all, for a decorated hero like him, what was one manticore?

Upon seeing the manticore crash through the brush, Ace dropped into a low stance. He had never seen anything like this beast he had no notion of how to fight it. It was while he was somewhat in shock that the manticore charged Ace and had it not been for the Percheron's well timed kick the monster would have torn him to shreds.
"Alright this thing is going down!" Ace nearly shouted, his confidence returned. He lept forward performing a surprisingly graceful roundoff, bucking at the manticore once he lands

~~~Manticore~~~
The manticore reared up on its hind-legs, about to counter-attack, but Ace's well timed kick connected harshly with her, throwing it off balance. It gave another roar of protest, it's intended prey was not at all as easy as it anticipated.
As it recovered, it lashed out with it's tail, swiping at Ace, but its balance worked against it and it missed, the tail flicking just an inch away from Ace's face. Unfortunately for the monster, this left it open for a counter-attack by Ace.
Having narrowly been missed by the manticore's stinger, Ace used the oppurtunity to launch a ferocious counter. In a fluid motion his spins, driving a hind leg at the beast's knee, hoping to use its size and weight against it by knocking it further off balance. Ace notice that he was in range of every kind of attack that the maticore could try and made sure he was ready to bolt if necessary.
~~~Manticore~~~
Ace's attack however cut in too sharply and missed, leaving him open for a counterattack, which the beast utilized, swatting him away. Its awkward position however, diminished the force of the blow, and while he was thrown off, Ace wasn't badly hurt by the attack.
This gave the Manticore time to return to its balance, and it snarled at the unicorn, obviously this has been more work than the monster expected.

"Whoa, feeling alright there, Ace?" Percheron asked, Ace was a unicorn after all, not an Earth Pony, he wasn't as hardy, but he seemed to be dealing well with the fight. Percheron was still baffled at the notion of a Manticore being so far into pony territory, especially a juvenile Manticore. If it were an adult one, he'd have stepped in long ago.
The Pegasus kept his eyes trained on the Manticore's tail, ready to jump in if it threatened to sting, after all, the last thing he wanted was having the Cult's Newest Recruit be its first casualty.

Ace rolled to regain his balance and put some distance between him and the manticore. He used this time to analyze what he had just learned from that first rush. His opponent wasn't all that fast, but it was tough. The only thing he seemed to have to worry about is the stinger which the beast seemed able to strike with at lightning speed.
"Yeah, I'm good, this thing is a pushover." he replied to Percheron with a cocky smirk before dashing forward and turning to deliver a kick to the manticore's head, a devastating blow were it to connect.

~~~Manticore~~~
The manticore was struck dead on, stumbling backwards with a surprised roar, it was hardly defeated, but it decided that this prey was too much work for it. Plus, it still had that flying one to fight after she won over this one.
Deciding she'd better look for a meal elsewhere, the manticore bounded off, crashing into a few trees dizzily, before disappearing again.
"Not bad! You've got some good moves there Ace." Percheron landed nimbly back on his feet, "Of course, beating a Manticore cub is not that hard a task, I hope it's mommy doesn't come looking for us." The Pegasus looked around at the devastation caused by the monster's frenzy, and hummed to himself in thought.
"That there's a Manticore out of Everfree or the mountains is a bothersome matter of itself." He said to no one in particular, and then shrugged it off, patting Ace on the back heartily. "Well done, Ace. You got the stuff." After doing so, the stallion led on, skipping and climbing over the obstacles caused by the monster. Wondering again what would ever cause a cub to stray so far from home.
As the manticore left, Ace breathed a sigh of relief and relaxed his muscles. He chuckled nervously at Percheron's comment. He wasn't used to praise and so he wasn't quite sure how to take it. What the pegasus said next made his blod run cold. That thing was just a baby?!
The unicorn flicked his head to move the bangs from his eyes "Uh, Thanks....So if that was just a baby manticore, I'd hate to see the mother." He took a couple of steps toward Percheron, wincing slightly. Appearantly his opponent had done more damage than he thought, Ace was pretty sure he had a bruised rib.
Percheron didn't have any healing supplies handy, he wasn't expecting a run in with a Manticore. "You did good, Ace, are you okay to walk? You look a little beat up there... I..." He stopped, "I could give you a lift."
The Pegasus would not usually offer such a service, he was usually too proud and too harsh to allow someone the leisure. However, Ace was a unicorn, not as sturdy as he was, not to mention his guts in fighting a Manticore, even a baby, were remarkable. He started to really like this guy. He'd have to ask Red Charge to put him under Vorpal, no way will he let a unicorn like this fall to Watermark's hooves, even if he understood how important Mages were to their struggle.
He spread his wings wide, "I could give you a lift, if you want, trust me, it's not far away, and I've carried much heavier." The stallion offered once more, to his unicorn companion, "It would be no trouble at all."
Ace was taken aback by Percheron’s offer. While it was true that he hadn’t known the Pegasus for long, he didn’t seem like the type to offer this kind of service. Ace didn’t want to appear rude and turn down his offer, and his injuries made it all the more tempting, but he didn’t want to be a burden either.
Ace took a few more steps towards Percheron, hoping that the ‘walk it off’ method would take effect. Unfortunately for the unicorn, the pain in his side intensified with each step and Ace wasn’t confident he’d make it out of the woods, yet alone to their destination, without Percheron’s assistance.
“I think I’ll take you up on that offer.” He said with an awkward grin
"Alright, come on up buddy, we'll get you healed up in no time." Percheron said, kneeling low to allow Ace to climb. He couldn't let an injured unicorn suffer, it was his duty to ensure the safety and well being of all Equestrians.
And though it came at a personal discomfort, Percheron was still happy to be able to help the unicorn, Red Charge was right, when he had first spoken to him. He could still make a big difference, a change, he could still help. The Pegasus was glad he listened to him that day.
