Eagle Eyes, for the first time, seriously pondered over his words after mention of a cutie mark, and she spared a glance back at her own. "What about a sense of duty?" She asked, more rhetorically than seeking any answer. "Just because you have to do something doesn't mean it doesn't have to be un-fun. That's all in how you do it; what kind of mindset you're in. If it's not fun, then you're the one making it not fun." Easily said from somepony whose engine runs on adrenaline.
His rebellious mentality, though, did cause the wry half-smirk to rekindle on her expression. To that she said nothing, anticipating such a spectral distance between them of that nature would be something on which they'd hardly see eye-to-eye and, moreover, what should she care? He was just some random civilian pony! What was she doing having this heart-to-heart with him anyway?! The question was confusing, really. He'd gotten her to start yammering on without even realizing it. A glance was spared back to him as he trotted up though the pleasantry was once more absent.
"Yeah, Notes, second star to the right and straight on 'til morning," she answered sarcastically with a slight upturn of her snout toward the direction of Ponyville in eyesight. Her own hooves came to a halt. "Next time you're out here, exercise a little more caution." With those words in parting, she pivoted about and began walking back up the path in the opposite direction.

“Duty? There’s nothing wrong with having something to do, but when it’s an obligation... If someone says ‘you’re doing this whether you like it or not’ it’s hard to make it fun because you know that you’re just doing what somepony else doesn’t want to do themselves.” Or at least that’s how Riot saw it. Why would Eyes be asking him about duties? What could he do to help out anypony the way she could? The answer was: he couldn’t.
It got him feeling a down and he in turn rested his flank near the entrance to the forest and turned to watch Eagle Eyes go to where ever she was needed next. “Just so you know, you’re pretty cool. It’s a shame you’re out here all day long, glad I bumped into you though.” He felt afterwards that a simple ‘thanks’ would suffice, but no matter the point was across. He expected the compliment to not rest well with her. But, whatever, he liked compliments; he loved compliments. Perhaps she would too.
He knew there was nothing to be done anywhere else, so he decided to stay where he was, just on the edge of Ponyville and watch her go. It was an odd day, but one that left him with a smile as he thought about it all. Maybe he would see her in the future. “So long as she’s not hiding in the snow again.” Riot whinnied to himself.
