Nul walked into a small pub with a heavy sigh, it had been a few days since his 'involvement' in an exploding mansion incident with a rather gun-ho griffon who was rather blunt. Nul went to the bar and found a seat for himself as he wrote down his order to the bartender who nodded and brought over a drink. The 'loot' the griffon had given him got him a good amount of bits and he still had a rather large sum of those bits as well as he lifted his drink to his lips and drank it. Refugees, assassins, and this whole bloody war caused alot of ponies to surge to these pubs looking for cider to quell their fears. Nul on the other hoof was only here to forget the past few days.
Bloodshed didn't phase him and he often didn't care about having to draw blood when he needed to. What bothered him was the bad state refugees from the war were in. How they were treated, what they needed to do to care for their homeless families. It was enough to drive a stallion or mare to drink. Nul found the cider he had ordered was once again having not much of an effect on him as he had hoped. But he still drank, he paid his bits and was going to finish his drink. He reflected on the past few days letting his mind wonder and not paying attention to his surroundings.

Sitting beside him at the bar was a blue Pegasus who, much like the others, came to drown her sorrows in drink. With the news rapidly spreading of The Adversarys fate a slight sigh of relief spread across the land. Glide however was not nearly as cheerful. She was finally given leave from Avitus' ship to attend the funeral of her husband and young colt. She looked into her cup, swirled the contents and then took another gulp. The funeral was set for at least a few days from now since the city's morticians were backed up. To much death and sorrow and pain filled the hearts of many of the ponies in the bar.
She looked over to the Unicorn sitting beside her and noticed his wandering eye. She called over the bartender and asked for another round between herself and the unicorn next to her. "What brings you to Manehatten young man? A funeral, lost family, or are you a refugee?" She inquired. She didn't turn in her seat only her head, reveling her blood shot and puffy eyes. Her muscles had become very well defined for a mare from her time upon the griffon ship. She could fight now which was her goal but she missed her days of medicine as well. Her home in Ponyville was no more, her home in canterlot consisted of a troops barracks upon a war ship.

He was deep in thought when the voice spoken to him shook him out of his mind. He slightly looked at the mare as a new cup was placed before him as he took out the paper and scratched on it with the pen he carried. Having no way to speak was a pain sometimes and earned him some unusual glances from those he traveled and sometimes worked alongside of. Passing the page to her it read "Mercenary, although I dont often take pay so maybe just a stallion that likes to help others" the note read drinking the cider. If it were not any indication he was a fighter the scars that littered his body showed that he had been in a quite a few serious fights himself. Although if he participated in any part of the war he would not remember it.
His red-orange eyes turned back to the pegasus as another note was made and passed to her "Sorry if you find this way of communication improper. I'm mute, and my past is unknown even to me" he drank from his cup again as the note continued "What about you, you look like a soldier pony". He had long come to terms with his memory loss and his mute ways, if he found a way to get them back then he would try but for now he was content.

She took each note confused at first about this odd way of communication. Maybe he had one of those tiny squeaky voices? "So which type of pony do you help? are you a robin hood stealing from the rich and giving to the poor or are you a jack of all trades ready for any hire?" She finished her first drink and rubbed her eyes before she went onto the second beverage. She took a big gulp before reading the second not and automatically felt bad for her assumptions. She should have known better from the appearance of his body from the scars and such.
"A mute huh?" she inquired. "and you have no idea how you became a mute?" she scratched the back of her head and looked around. "Well don't worry about other ponies stares and yes I am a solider. I was originally stationed in Canterlot when it fell as a doctor in the Equestrain air force. Once canerlot fell i enlisted on a griffon warship under the command of Avitus. " She sniffled a bit and returned to her drink. "Beyond that was a life that seems oh so very surreal and imagined. You may just be a lucky one not remembering your past." She added.

He took a drank as he passed off another note "I was mostly defending evacuees and escort. Sometimes hired as a search and rescue" the note detailed as he looked over at her as she spoke of her military history. Medical and combat, not many ponies would try to do both rather they focused on one. He himself was a combat type, when he did get injured there were others almost always nearby to help him get back to full health. Surreal...that word struck him, he had seen the dead that had not gotten away before the war. Almost none were spared in the areas he had to work, but he guessed now that the war was over things might begin to be healed. He would most likely himself be getting more jobs, particularly of helping move those who were displaced back to their homes. Even rebuilding them.
That was a grim fact about war, no matter what there would always be something to do before, during and even after. He had passed a note to her after hearing her comment on not remembering "It's a hindrance to be honest. There are also the dreams, you can almost make out and recognize the voices that are in them. But you never do" he hadn't gotten much sleep do to those dreams as he took a drink "There is always a battle to be fought" he thought to himself. He then turned his head to her passing another note "What about you, what brings you here?" the note asked

She nodded after reading the first note "A noble cause indeed young man there will be plenty of work in that area for the time being" She thought of her passed husband and colt and sending them here. She felt at blame from their deaths, if she wouldn't have sent them here and brought them to canerlot with her. They may still be alive. A small tear slide down her face before she shook the thought from her head temporarily. She looked to his second note and looked back up at him with a questioning look in her eye. "How far back can you remember?" she paused for a moment "And I also never caught your name. I'm Glide, Glide Heart."
She took another drink while he did and another as he scratched his note. When she read it, her heart sunk again to the pits of her stomach. Looking back down at the table she sighed and held back tears as she spoke with a few wavers voice. "To bury my past. My husband and Colt were killed during a diamond dog raid on the city. Their apartment complex fell to the ground and they were crushed..." she broke off her sentence and lost herself in her thoughts again of guilt. Tears dripped onto the counter and she added "If only I had brought them with me"...

He listened to her praising what he did, he had often gotten that same praise. Honestly he couldn't just let those in trouble suffer so he did what he could, whether finding their belongings. Escorting them to safer areas or even donating his own money, he did what he could. He acknowledged her question as he wrote down on the note and slid it over to her "All I remember is waking up in the Everfree by a tree, bloodied and weak. I exited to the nearest town where I was helped and nursed back to health" he explained. He didn't know why he remembered the tree he was by so easily but it was something that stuck with him.
He then listened to her talk about her lost husband and colt. He felt the pulls of sadness, to lose one's family in these times was the hardest thing to take. He passed her a note "You couldn't have known what would happen to them. Do not blame yourself. Rather look to the future and honor their memory by living for them" the note said. He had taken this lesson to heart himself after he failed to save a few others. So he promise them and himself he would live for them, a promise he was still keeping to this day. He ordered them both a new drink as the barkeeper brought it over, the room was nearly empty as the other ponies had left to go do their own things with only the two at the bar a few others in the room.

She cleared the tears from her eyes and listened back to his reallocation of his past and nodded gently. When he spoke of moving on and living for them she looked back at her empty mug. Gratefully taking the third round from the barkeep she took another solid chug and lowered the mug. Hearing how he spoke of knowing the pain of losing others she returned her gaze to him. Out of the corner of her eye noticing others must have been leaving. It was probably getting late but she didn't really care. "Then is that why you make your life helping others? Because its what they would have wanted?" She asked.
Looking back, that was a big reason she wanted to learn to defend herself, why she enlisted in the first place. To help others and save as many as possible. Help her patients at all costs. Whoever this pony was, he was making her think very deeply about herself and her motivations. She still didn't even know his name. "You're right I couldn't have know thats what would of happened but there is still the regret and doubts."

He nodded folding his hooves and writing down the next note and passing it to her "Yes, I was unable to save those that needed help the most and in their final breaths I made a promise to them that I would fight on for them so others wouldn't feel their pain. Every passing day that I do good for others I feel like im helping the lost souls feel at ease" the note said. He wasn't a very sentimental stallion let alone one who shied from battle. But the dead that didn't deserve to die had always made it so his heart was with them as they passed.
He let a soft smile looking at her as a new note was passed to her "My name is Nul, and for me it means two things. It can mean empty as my memories and voice and it can also mean a future that needs to be filled" he drank his cider "I fight because there are those who can't and I help those that cant help themselves". He chuckled he had to admit he sounded like he made himself out to be a hero of sorts.

She smiled gently in return at the stallions words and kind smile. Even if he didn't want to admit it he was a hero of sorts. A modern time Robin hood minus the stealing from the rich. "Thank you Nul your words make me feel much better. Heres to a much brighter future for Equestria and ourselves" She raised her tankard in the air shouting out to the remaining patrons of the bar. "And heres to the end of the bloody war!" She threw back the last remaining drops in the mug and grinned at Nul.
"So what does the future hold for you young man, where do you go on from here?" She inquired. there were probably plenty of refuges to return home and towns to rebuild. She herself may return for awhile to medicine among the air force and maybe even Avitus' ship. She still had duties to attend to there. The new Equestria was her oyster.

He smiled and took a drank with her as he nodded glad that his words helped her through what she was dealing with. He seemed to have that affect on most ponies and other specsis, although sometimes he didn't believe it himself. He drank to her toast and and nodded, he was most certainly glad that bloody war was over. And they were on the winning side, although with many casualties.
he thought about her question and produced a letter signed to him. The letter was from a pony he had helped a while ago telling him about a pony that might be able to help him a little, a pony by Watermark and he wrote a note "I need to track down this pony, dont know where he might be at" he explained.

She read the not and pondered for a moment. Had she heard that name before? "I have no clue who that is my friend but if you're looking for somepony you're in as good of place as any to find them." Setting her last tankard down on the table she produced a slip of paper from a sack beside her chair. She offered it to him and it was an obituary for her family. "If you want to come to the funeral I would appreciate it. Most of our friends were evacuated elsewhere." She looked again at the slip of paper he had given her.
"I hope you can find your man and if I hear anything I can let you know." She said setting her bag back down on the floor. there were thousands of ponies in Manehatten and with the crumbled and ruined state it was in, finding a single pony may be a daunting task.

He nodded and took the obituary, he would show up for his new friend here. He had wondered if her husband was like her, if he was a fighter. The colt could have had a promising life all but taken from him. Putting the obituary in a safe spot in his bag he nodded thinking about the task ahead of him, but he had always had the oddest coincidences in the world. Maybe on one of his jobs he would run into this Watermark, his mind then went to the other he met not long ago. The griffin was headstrong and he wondered what her role in the war was.
He passed a new note her way "Knowing my luck, ill run into this Watermark on another job. If i bump into him I will likely see if he can help" he mused "And often my luck seemed to be on the high" the note ended as he placed his hooves back on the ground, four empty cups and the bits to pay for both their drinks. And yet he stood as if he had not drunken a single sip of cider and stretched his neck.

She smiled softly feeling happy he would attend the funeral. Even though he was a stranger to her, he was very kind. "Thank you it means a lot." Her family did in fact have a bright future ahead of them, but no more. Her husband had been a photographer and her colt was only a year old. Still new to the world and it's wonders.
She read his note and chuckled at him nodding. "With your luck i'm sure you will run into this Watermark character." She watched him pay for their drinks and smiled. "Thank you Nul you didn't have to do that." She stood up with only a hint of imbalance. She held her drink well too. She had practice on the griffon ship.

He made a new note and passed it along "So where do you intend to head once your affairs here are done?" the note asked. If she was who she said she could do he would think she would go to where those that needed her talents were most. However since this war started many would new her expertise and her skills on a griffon airship would draw the attention of many more.
He himself would likely wonder around a little more taking more odd jobs and quest to help find those who went missing during the war, recover family heirlooms or even get contracted to help clear out areas that still held enemies of the kingdom or the feral beings that took them over. There was no end to his job but he would do it dutifully.
