Whizz, whizz. One of Blink's chakrams flew at Dog A, getting a powerful hit right in his sword arm. The canine let out a howl of pain, dropping his sword and coming to a complete stop. The other chakram had less luck, plinking off of Dog B's sturdy armor pathetically. Dog C pounced the unicorn, tackling to her ground and raising his mace to strike her. Only by teleporting away was Blink able to get to safety, slipping right out of the dog's grasp.
The dogs relocated Blink as she picked herself up, but they seemed panicked and unsure of how to defeat this foe. Dog D called out something in an unknown tongue before getting a chakram right between his eyes, splitting his head open and sending him to the ground. Meanwhile, Dog C had the bright idea to quickly pull Dog A in front of himself, using his 'friend' as a shield. A chakram went right into the poor dog's chin, eliciting another painful howl. The group was down to two capable dogs and a badly injured one. Things weren't looking good for the mutts.
Retort's firebomb proved deadly, to the dogs that were close enough to get hit at least. Three dogs on the left edge were able to skirt off and out of danger, while the ones in the middle and right were blasted to bits or forced to dive into the noxious cloud of gas where they quickly perished anyway.
Javelin flew like a bullet towards one of the archers, dodging his arrow but only managing to nick him in the back of his leg. The dog staggered a little bit, but remained standing. As the pegasus came back around to land and engage, three of the archers fired arrows at her. Two she dodged skillfully, while the third hit her dead-on in her wing armor. While it didn't penetrate, it did throw off her descent, sending the Razorwing crashing into the ground.
An archer attempted to pounce the recovering pony, but failed miserably, impaling itself on Javelin's wings as she rolled over. An attempt to hurl the dog at his fellows proved useless. The dog was now firmly impaled on her wing, writhing as blood dripped onto her armor. Javelin was now slowed significantly, and she wasn't flying away until she took the time and effort to get this dog off her wing.
Making the best from a bad situation, the pegasus was able to swing the impaled dog around like a club. One poor dog went headfirst into a tree, falling unconscious to the ground, while another went a short distance into the brush. The remaining archers grew wise, however, backing up and drawing their arrows. One arrow Javelin managed to catch using her impaled dog club, but her the pegasus dead on. At such a close distance on a slow-moving target, the arrow pierced her armor, embedding itself deep in her loin.
What was left to see was an armored pony with a dying dog stuck on her wing, an arrow jutting out of each of them; quite a sight to behold. One of the archers, meanwhile, had jolted back into the forest. Perhaps it was cowardice. Or maybe Javelin's image had made it too hard for him to contain his laughter.
Selenia's bolts pinned the linebacker dog right into the ground, three of them flying through a hand, an arm, and a foot. With one warrior incapacitated, she could teleport into the mess of dogs further back. Picking up one of their swords, the apprentice slashed and dispatched several of the mutts, even taking out a fully battle-ready dog charging towards her. The only downside to her effective attack was that Retort's firebomb had nicked her tail, lighting the end of it on fire.
To recap, Blink had the upper hand against a few dogs, Javelin looked like a circus act, Selenia's tail was on fire, and Retort had three nasty looking diamond dogs charging at him with weapons. Now would have been a good time for him to move away, except for the unexpected disturbance of earth beneath his feet. A dirty paw reached up, grabbing one of the unicorn's front hooves and holding it in place. "Got you, pony!!"
More diggers had arrived. Several popped up behind Blink to assist the Alphabet Dogs, while several others pulled themselves out of the earth to assist the ones that remained with Selenia. The diggers seemed uninterested in Javelin, but with all those archers remaining, she had her own problems to worry about.

The fight seemed to be going pretty well. Just from the opening volley one of the dogs was left unarmed and injured. Another did pounce on Blink, but with a smirk and a call of "Down, boy!" she teleported away right out from under him. Sadly her retaliation was blocked when the dog went and pulled his own ally into the way of her chakram (weren't they supposed to have some sort of pack loyalty thing?) but the other one hit its mark perfectly, practically sawing open the fourth dog's head before it returned to her.
One dead, one injured and two still standing, and not a scratch on Blink herself. She was just feeling confident about her odds when the diggers popped up from the ground to reinforce their buddies. She wasted no time teleporting away to get some distance between her and them, then refocused on the unarmored diggers. They would go down easier, but could be very dangerous if left unattended, so she would take them out and then finish off the original pack. All the while, of course, staying out of reach wherever possible, using both her hooves and her magic to relocate whenever they advanced.

Selenia watched her bolts hit home, crunching the lead dog hard into the dirt. With her immediate retaliators clear, she teleported into the mass of dogs and quickly bucked the nearest that wielded a sword. He went down with a crushed snout as his sword was sent spinning from his paws. Selenia plucked the blade from the air with her magic and elegantly turned it on its wielders. Taking the sparring and lessons from Klepto and Sturm to heart, she quickly engaged and prevailed against those who could fight, and cut down those who could not with severity and grace.
Selenia had studied weapons for years out of sheer curiosity and practicality in her library, but before circumstances demanded it, she had never considered adding something like a sword or a dagger to her arsenal of magic. Now that she had one in her magical grasp, on a live battlefield, the feeling was extremely satisfactory. The weight in her grasp, the concrete solidity of the edge clanging against armor and tracing against flesh. Something in the back of her head screamed that this was remarkably morbid, but training and necessity made her adept at keeping those feelings under lock and key. Battle is no place to be scared, something Red had drilled into her thick skull a few hours into her apprenticeship.
With a small reprieve, Selenia took a moment to scan the field, and caught a firebomb heading towards her from Retort's general direction. She jumped out of the way, but was too slow. The flames engulfed the dogs Retort had aimed for, but they licked at Selenia's tail as well. To make matters worse, a horde of diggers sprung up around her and the others. Retort was grabbed and Javelin was clearly injured and incapacitated, while Blink seemed to be holding her own.
She sheathed her stolen blade and prepared a teleport and another kinetic bomb, only comfortable devoting her hornpower to two active spells at one time. She spun her rear towards one of the diggers, aiming to smack the mutt with her burning tail. With some luck that would put it out and grant her an extra second or two to get her teleport set up. If not, she would simply stomp it out herself. The teleport would take her to Javelin. The diggers meant to ambush her would be easier prey at range, and Javelin looked like she'd appreciate some extra support. As for the bomb, that would be dropped right before she blinked away. A nice gift for the dogs she would be leaving behind, preventing them from running her or her friends down for at least another half minute or so.

Javelin didn’t get a chance to see what became of her first attack because she had already moved onto the next one. She dove, and an arrow glanced off of her wing armor. Her wing involuntarily folded from the impact at exactly the worst moment and she began to plummet. Realizing her predicament, Javelin cried out before she clenched her teeth and attempted to roll with the impact. Despite her attempt at controlling her fall, Javelin still ended up with her face in the dirt.
As she rose to her hooves, she also extended her wings to make sure that she still could. She would definitely have bruises after a fall like that, but it didn’t feel like anything was broken. Javelin’s attention was quickly seized by a Diamond Dog archer as he impaled himself upon the point of her wingblade. She tried to wriggle the bugger off, but he held fast and continued to yelp whenever Javelin tried to remove the sword. He was probably going into shock, because he quieted after a moment.
Two more dogs tried to accost the winged mare, but she batted them aside with her new improvised weapon. When Celestia gives you lemons… Javelin mentally shrugged. No other dogs tried to jump her, having wised up to her lethal melee combat skills. Now they were doing what they were supposed to do, only now they had mucked up her mobility by throwing themselves on her swords and killing themselves, forcing her to throw around their dead weight. She kind of wished a hornhead were nearby to help her put aside her burden, because he was definitely not coming off without… “Oh, carp!”
Javelin quickly threw the dog in front of her as a couple archers loosed their arrows at her. “Haha!” she cheered when she caught an arrow on her shield, but a second later that cheer turned into a shriek of pain as another arrow pierced her back. Her back knees weakened, but she stayed standing, grimacing from the pain. She looked around to assess the battlefield. Her comrades were a few hundred feet away fighting the soldier dogs and their newly emerging reinforcements. Blink was blinking, Selenia was on fire and Retort was getting dog-handled by one of the new arrivals. They were all engaged and probably not going to be able to help her out. Carp. The archers were standing in a group about twenty feet from her nocking arrows, well, except for one. That one was running full tilt into the forest. Javelin couldn’t figure out why, since she hadn’t even given her battle cry yet.
If she just sat there, she was going to take a lot more arrows and start doing a lot more dying. So Javelin charged the Diamond Dog line, the wind in her mane, and screamed aloud as she went giving voice to her pain, fear, and anger at these creatures who had dared to invade her home. With every step Javelin felt a lance of pain and fire where her wound was supposed to be, and distantly felt her armor and fur soak with blood all the while.

Retort found himself in a rather dire and unexpected situation, with three rather brutish Diamond Dogs now barreling towards him with their weapons at the ready; the unicorn surmised it was time to move away and as quickly as possible. He’d have to apologize for setting Selenia’s tail on fire later, but those are the costs associated with dealing with chemicals and concoctions not known for their discretion. Dismissing those thoughts for now, he turned to run, with his bags once again on his back – only to find his progression cut rather short thanks to a rude, though absurdly observant Dog which had just manifested itself from the ground to clasp his forehoof.
Retort had no time for this Dog, nor his cheeky comment. With a flustered sigh, Retort’s horn ignited and his magic drew forth a potion labeled in pen, ‘aqua fortis 85%’, which he then dunked on the emerging dog’s face and arm. The moment it made contact with the poor mutt, his fur dissolved away from where it touched, turned the skin a sickly yellow hue and begun to dissolve away, quickly into the fatty layer. He yanked his hoof up, pulling the diamond dog with him, then out of the, now screaming, blinded Diamond Dog’s grasp – if the poor beast were to survive, he’d assuredly become more scab then dog. But, that would be unlikely, as fortune so had it; the melting dog was between Retort and the three charging hounds. He took the opportunity to slam one more bottle, ‘aqua ragia’, with his magic onto the Diamond Dog then give him a sharp buck with his back hooves, with intent to send the now spontaneously combusting canine to the three others – hopefully to knock them down, or in the very least buy him some time to retreat towards the closest ally, which happened to be Javelin, then suddenly, Selenia, before Javelin charged.
”Terribly sorry about the tail.” Retort called to Selenia as he galloped towards her; he used his magic to smother the tip of her tail. In his next thought, his magic was juggling his materials as he concocted another round of potions.

Blink charged up a teleportation spell to escape dogs and diggers, but a slip in concentration resulted in her spell fizzling out. Rather than teleporting away, Blink was left staring stupidly as the diggers charged her. She was, however able to dodge getting tackled by one of the weaker mutts. The warrior dogs, meanwhile appeared to have sensed something wrong with the unicorn, abandoning their injured comrade to charge after Blink.
A second attempt at teleporting proved much more effective. Blink teleported away to safety, leaving the dogs too far away to strike at her with their melee weapons. Blink then sent out a series of four chakram attacks, one after the other. The first flew right into a digger's throat, cutting it open and killing him. The second merely cut a digger in the leg, limiting his mobility. Her third attack cut a digger across his head, knocking him injured and unconscious to the ground. The last plinked off Warrior B's armor, again doing nothing.
With all the excitement going on, Blink hadn't noticed the diamond dog archer aiming his bow and arrow from the skirts of the Everfree. Only now was it clear what had happened. Warrior D's exclamation had been a cry for help, and one of the archer's from Javelin's group had broken off to assist. Now Blink had less than a second to react to an arrow flying right towards her.
The good news was that Blink managed to execute the spell in time. She teleported fifteen feet away from where she would have been hit.
The bad news was that she had teleported vertically.
Blink crashed into the ground on her right fore-leg, the sound of a breaking bone ringing throughout the battlefield. Her most immediate senses were the pain shooting from her leg, and Warrior Dog C laughing at her predicament. The two warriors and limping digger advanced towards the unicorn, looking to finish her off. The archer prepared another arrow as extra security.
Meanwhile, Selenia was having better luck. Her tail-whip not only sent a digger stumbling back, but also put out the flame encroaching on her rear-end. Her teleportation spell and kinetic bomb worked exactly as planned, sending the three diggers flying out of the battle. It even knocked one of Retort's pursuers off of his feet, giving him one less dog to worry about for the time being.
Retort had equally satisfying results. Both his potions worked exactly as he described, scabbing over and combusting the poor digger. An effective throw flung the burning mutt right into the two dogs charging Retort, knocking them both down with a burning dog on top of them. The dog Selenia had knocked over looked up with wide eyes, shaking his head as Retort jolted over to Javelin.
Blink's awful luck seemed to be a counterbalance for all three of the others, because Javelin was having extraordinary luck as well. The archer dogs' arrows ended up doing diddly squat. Some fumbled with their, panicked as Javelin charged them. Other arrows ineffectively plinked off her armor or stuck into the dog on her wing. Swinging her dog-wing-club at an archer knocked him away painfully, but the impaled dog was still stuck to her wing.
Selenia teleported in to assist, but it seemed the group's luck had finally run neutral. The archers had yet to prepare another arrow to attack her, but the opportunity was squandered by a pathetic kinetic bolt that only sent a single archer stumbling back a few steps. Retort arrived too late to do anything, having ran over rather than teleporting.
Javelin, Retort, and Selenia now had only a few panicked archers and a warrior dog heading towards them to worry about. The other two warriors were still recovering from the flaming dog thrown on them, as well as putting out the small fires on their fur. Broken-leg Blink was in much more dire straits, having an archer, two warriors, and a slow digger descending upon her.

Why, oh why, did she have to tempt fate by thinking things could actually go well for her? Blink would think she'd have learned by now. She'd tried to teleport rapidly in response to the arrow, because arrow, and messed up the direction in her haste. The jury was still out on how this compared to just taking the hit.
"Could use an assist here!" She called out to the others, trying to stand on three legs. The movement of her injured one was too much, though, and she collapsed again almost instantly. But Blink was a unicorn, and more importantly a soldier. She was trained for this. She could work through pain. Just as importantly, they were in a much better state. Drawing and releasing a deep breath, and trying to move as little as possible, Blink focused on a single, swift teleport to bring her to the others.

Selenia allowed herself a determined smile. Most of her plan had gone off without a hitch, and even her bolts sent towards the archers had given them pause for at least a few seconds. Retort had similar luck with his efforts, and Javelin's quick thinking had most probably saved her life. Blink, on the other hoof, was stuck in a more serious pickle, similar to Javelin's from earlier. The opportunity didn't escape her sight, however. Most of the dogs on the field were either dead, incapacitated, or had their paws full with something else. Only a few archers and warriors posed an immediate threat, and they could be dealt with easily one-on-one. Selenia and Retort were already on the way to get Javelin back to fighting strength, and Blink was in no position to zip around the battlefield and take care of the preoccupied dogs before they charged again.
Selenia turned to Javelin and lit up her horn, sliding the impaled dog off of her blades and freeing her wings. Thank Luna her blades weren't barbed or serrated, which would have given Selenia a much tougher time trying to pull it off. "If you can fly, Blink needs some help ASAP. We get her mobile again and anything unarmored is as good as dead. Retort and I can carve through the trash." She nodded towards the alchemist who had just arrived and charged up another few bolts, keeping her eyes trained on the archers that gave javelin such a rough time. "As it is, most of the dogs we left behind aren't in good positions to defend themselves for the moment. You see an opportunity, you take it. We can't afford letting them get back up just to bog us down again."
After saying her piece, she sent off her bolts and launched into a zig-zag gallop towards the archers. Keeping her center of gravity low and exploiting her stance as a natural quadruped, she kicked off erratically, shifting direction on a dime much like a gazelle running from a cheetah, in an effort to throw off the archers' aim. These mutts she'd deal with manually since her magic needed a short break- repetitive casting in protracted situations was draining for any unicorn, and Selenia wanted to stave off that handicap for as long as possible.

Once Retort was with the others, he turned sharp and look back at his hoof-work on the Diamond Dogs, he found himself surprised that worked as well as it had, though he had been banking on the Diamond Dogs being somewhat demoralized after all the horrific things he had set upon them but he wasn’t going to look a gift horse in the mouth. With only a moment to spare for those thoughts, he went back to concocting some more potions; he used his magic to juggle the ingredients around him, spinning, twirling, grinding and shaking – it left him little mental power to perform any offensive attacks with his magic, but, thus far, his potions were doing well enough to off-set actually engaging any of the ruffians head on, that was best left up to the real fighters.
“Javalian, catch!” Retort called as he magically tossed the Pegasus a small corked-vial of some milky red liquid, all the while as he also shook two other elixirs within his sphere of magically mixing – the contents turned, respectively, from purple and red to white, before they took on a final, yellow-gold powder and a greenish liquid hue. “For Blink.” The potion he had just tossed to Javalian would, if successfully administered, mend the apparent fracture or break and dull the pain. However, it was temporary and the bone would remain weak till properly set. It was enough to get her back on her hooves, so long as she didn’t receive any additional trauma to the wound.
Retort took after Selenia, he galloped beside her, then broke away after the warrior when she went zig-zag. With his magic he launched the bottle filled with the golden-yellow powder at the warrior, aimed to slam right onto the Dog’s chest. When it burst, it released a rather pretty cloud of gold-like dust, intended to wash over the warrior with a thin coat. Retort stopped his charge; his magic now menacingly tossed an assortment of small rocks, clustered in a tight ball, then tossed that too at the Warrior. Upon impact, the rocks would trigger the Fulminating Gold dust, forcing a chain reaction, thus hopefully exploding the Diamond Dog into giblets.

Javelin's bout of shouting lasted only a few seconds, but it had done what it was supposed to do. The enemy archers were startled by her sudden charge and were fumbling with their bows. Behind her, Javelin heard a magical burst of energy as Selenia appeared nearby. The pegasus felt a surge of excitement as she realized she wasn't totally screwed, then swung her corpse hammer around and knocked an archer aside. Selenia used magic to stagger another dog, a bit ineffectually. Regardless, now Javelin had backup, and someone could help her get rid of the dog stuck to her sword. "Hey Selenia! Get this thing off of me!" she yelled to her comrade. The unicorn obliged. Javelin gave her now free wing a few test flaps to get feeling back into it. Pony wings were not meant to carry that much weight. The wound from the arrow that Javelin had taken in the back was still pinging with pain, but with the extra dose of adrenaline now in her system, she felt that she could continue fighting for the time being. When the mage mentioned Blink, Javelin looked about her for the blue mare. There she knelt, several dozen yards away, cradling her foreleg. Diamond dogs were bearing down on her and she would not last without help. Javelin pumped her wings ascending a few feet to hover above the ground. She felt the wound shift with every flap, but found that she could maintain flight. Maybe it wasn't as bad as she had believed it to be. Then again, Javelin couldn't see the injury, only feel it, so she had no way of knowing. Retort tossed her a vial, which she caught in her teeth. She shifted it to the side of her mouth about to speak, but he answered her question before she could ask it. Apparently it would do something to help her leg. Thusly equipped, Javelin nodded to her squadmates and took to the air. She shifted the potion to her forehoof, and then carefully placed the medicine in a pouch on her side. As she flew towards Blink, Javelin assessed the approaching battlefield. The archer was a great threat, especially considering that Blink could no longer dodge with her broken leg. The warriors were also dangerous, because, though Javelin knew little of unicorn magic and didn't actually know how casting worked, Blink may not be able to attack them, being too distracted by her injury. What to do? There were also incapacitated opponents lying on the ground, but they weren't going anywhere for the time being. Remembering what Selenia had said about Blink being effective against lightly armored targets, Javelin chose her course of action. She gained speed as she swooped towards the warrior dogs, with the intent to slam into at least one of them and engage them. The archer might miss, the digger was limping, but with the armored warriors distracted, Blink might be able to get away, Javelin reasoned, noting the glow around the unicorn's horn. The Diamond Dog warriors became larger and larger as she flew on, and prepared herself for a full speed air to surface tackle.

Blink swiftly teleported out of danger, but not too far away for her frustrated attackers to change course. The warrior dogs ran after her as the digger dog let out a groan of annoyance.
In a moment of clumsiness, the approaching warrior that Retort had targeted swung his hammer at Retort's projectile vial. The yellow powder exploded with a puff, completely coating the dog and leaving him stopped and coughing. This gave Retort plenty of time to aim properly and toss the small rocks at his foe, leaving the dog as an exploded stain on the ground before he'd even known what hit him.
After Selenia had pulled the dead dog off of Javelin's wing, she blasted bolts at the bow-wielding mutts. The bolts in tandem with Selena's melee attack proved extremely successful. Two of her bolts had sent archers launching away with a rough landing, while a blow to a cringing dog knocked him unconscious. Only one archer in the group had managed to get a shot off, but the arrow whizzed by Selenia' mane as she charged and delivered a powerful buck right into his rib cage. The sound of cracking ribs practically echoed through the field, as the dog stumbled back, soon falling to his knees and hacking up blood as he lay on his hands and knees.
The warrior dogs caught sight of Javelin flying straight towards them, and spaced themselves out a little to avoid both getting hit. As she charged towards Warrior Dog B, the dog reached out to grab her. The resulting tussle knocked the pegasus and diamond dog aside, neither terribly worse for the wear.
Warrior C was now sprinting towards Blink, his mace in his paw and his eyes on the elusive unicorn. She could see the mix of desperation, frustration, and anger swirling in his eyes as he closed in on her. The unicorn fired up a teleportation spell, but the dog swung his mace at the side of her head, hitting Blink with a powerful blow as the spell fired off. A loud crunchy, cracking sound mingled with the audible flash of the teleport, and all heads turned to where Blink reappeared a moment later.
The unicorn's body slumped and fell to the ground, laying motionless on the grass. Blink lay dead with a snapped neck, her demise as sudden as one of her teleports. The warrior that had killed her grinned proudly, having finally brought down the pony that had caused them so much trouble.
"HA!"

Retort adverted his eyes as the shower of blood and viscera rained down upon him from the former Diamond Dog, with bits of entrails and matter coated him in a fine sheen, he glanced back to the small blanked hole which once stood a proud Diamond Dog solider – now nothing more than a blood and soot spot on the soil. Retort spat as he ran a fetlock over his muzzle to wipe away the remains from his face, before he turned to see the other’s success. His gaze met, horribly so, the terrible death of Blink as the Diamond Dog’s mace met with her neck in the moment of a teleportation spell – to watch her body reappear a breath later, only to slump to the grass motionless and deathly still.
Retort whinnied, flashed his forehooves in a turn and charged towards the Dog which had struck the fatal blow – all the while the bottle of green-liquid wrapped in his magic shook as it mixed in it’s flash. He snarled as he barreled towards the warrior, then turned sharp, while the vial continued forward before it exploded from natural reactions, sending a rain of fine mist of Spirit of Vitriol to shower over the poor dog. With every breath the canine took as the fine mist fell upon him, his body would burn and begin to dissolve from the inside and the out. His fur, then skin would slough away in moments, while the soft tissues in his throat would begin to separate, soften and dissolve till his inside were a slurry of blood and matter, while his flesh washed away like grime under a warm tap. Within moments, his white bones would be visible, soon seemingly bleached as muscle and tissue dissolved away.
Retort left the dog to whatever device his chemicals had in store with him – a horrid death he had hoped as he galloped to Blink’s body. He fumbled with potions, ran an assortment before him as he tried to find one to help – hopefully. He ended up in a slide beside the mare’s body, scrambled for a moment to regain a hoof before examining the body with his wave of unicorn magic over the other pony’s upper half. He promised to keep these ponies alive and by Celestia and Luna, he would try, even if there were no cure for death, he knew, maybe there was still enough time to save Blink from this most untimely demise. With his magic he brought forth from his saddlebags a ampule of some strange syrupy-liquid and a syringe with a sinisterly long needle. His magic held the ampule still while the needle was jabbed into the stopper, he used his teeth to pull the plunger then stabbed into Blink’s neck at the break, with the plunger jamming down in one swift motion. A traditional healing tonic, concentrated, one to mend bones, skins, organs, and such in its diluted concentration, but at full concentration for a healthy a pony it was terribly deadly, inciting uncontrolled cancers and quick blood toxicity, but, he never had the opportunity to test it on a mortally wounded, likely deceased, pony. It was a last ditch effort with only a glimmer of hope that it could, with the slightest margin, restore a central nervous system. It certainly couldn’t kill the mare anymore – also it would be good field research on healing concoction concentration levels and their effects. Once the plunger had sank, he yanked it free from the mare's body, then prepared for the Diamond Dogs - he wouldn't let them get near her, dead or not.

Selenia barely took notice of the dog's arrow as it whizzed past her head, severing a few strands of her fiery mane in the process. Hearing her bolts strike home, she wound up and pistoned her rear legs into the dog's chest as he was readying another arrow, his sternum collapsing under the force before he was launched a few meters away. After recovering from the follow through, she hopped up and finished the crippled mutt with a vicious curb stomp, grinding his skull into the dirt. The dogs that were hit by her bolts were motionless nearby, bones shattered and internal trauma abound in similar fashion- they were down for the count.
Starting up in a gallop, she turned towards Javelin. With the dog gone from her wingblades and her wings free for flight, her greatest advantage was back in play, but her injuries had brought her down to a level more easily manageable by the warriors she now faced. With fewer distractions on the field, their squad could start to cohere back into a single unit, providing support and tackling enemies as a group, instead of having to split their attention to handle specific threats individually. With Retort leaving behind a pile of tenderized diamond dog to go back up Blink, their dual tag-teams could be fine, but it was a longshot, and Selenia felt that their luck was starting to wear thin.
Halfway to Javelin, Selenia's ears perked at a sickening snap followed by the bang of a hasty teleport, sounds she knew all too well. Her eyes followed her ears and rested on Blink, lying in a heap some distance away from a mace-wielding dog at the end of his swing. The dog in question kindly addressed the question Selenia was starting to formulate by raising his mace and howling out a cheer. Blink was dead.
Courtesy of Advisor RedCharge and extenuating circumstances requiring it, Selenia could proudly declare that she was unafraid of death. Being prepared for it was another story entirely. She wasn't ready to die; she didn't want to, and she doubted Blink stepped onto this battlefield and cut down so many dogs with such vigor with the expectation that it would end like this.
Selenia bared her teeth and turned back towards Javelin, renewing her gallop and bracing to deliver a followup buck to the warrior, distracted from Javelin's initial attack. Retort's whinny of unrepentant rage barely registered. One down, she thought. Casualties were a part of war, and hundreds more were probably befalling similar or worse fates in the main force at that very moment. It was remarkable their tiny squad had persisted for so long as it was.

Javelin impacted with the Diamond Dog soldier, just as planned. She had expected to fall over from the impact, but she had not expected the dog to grab and throw her as he went down. The pegasus tried to roll as she hit the ground. Then she scrambled to her hooves and turned towards her opponent. The dog was also climbing to its feet, and so Javelin went on the offensive. She ran towards the warrior keeping her body low and slashed at the dog’s legs in an attempt to trip him. The next strike was aimed at his throat. The quicker she could take this dog down, the quicker she could move onto the next. When the dog she was fighting was defeated, Javelin decided she would fly over to the next and engage him. If she beat both of the warrior dogs, Blink’s chances of surviving would increase dramatically.
The pegasus glanced towards the other combatants during brief pauses in her melee. Blink had teleported again, Retort was running towards the prone unicorn. Selenia had finished her opponents and was making her way towards where Javelin was engaged. Good, the mage could flank him while Javelin had his attention. Hopefully she wouldn’t shoot explodey things at them while the two of them were so close together.

Just as Retort procured his potion, all the surviving, conscious dogs perked up their ears, more than a few looking in the direction of the Everfree. Only a few moments later, one of the warriors barked an order in the dogs' archaic language. Soon dogs began scrambling in all directions, diving into any tunnel opening they could find. Warrior Dog B, his attention split between the call to retreat and Javelin, received a powerful blow from Selenia, sending him rolling backwards like a pill bug. Her enemy slowly picked himself up as the unicorn charged in for a follow-up strike, but this time her attack was much less effective. The strike hit the dog's armor pathetically, hardly fazing the warrior and eliciting only a huff of mild annoyance. The armored canine elbowed Selenia in the head, giving her several seconds of double vision as she staggered away and the dog escaped into a tunnel. Retort flung his potion into the air in the direction of Blink's murderer, then sliding next to his teammate's corpse to begin his attempt at reviving her. The flying potion exploded over the warrior dog, making him cringe as he prepared for a painful, chemical induced death. What he got instead, to his surprise, was a pleasant rain of a healing mist tending to his minor wounds. Only after Retort had released the syringe into Blink did he realize what he'd done. In his haste, the alchemist had swapped the two potions. Blink's corpse released an unnatural gurgling sound as her body began to collapse in on itself. Skin and bone fizzled and dissolved away, leaving Blink as a disgusting, half-melted pony puddle lying in front of Retort. If there was any question as to whether Blink could have been any more dead, Retort had answered it. The now fully-healed warrior dog escaped into one of the tunnels, leaving the three ponies alone with a few dogs stirring from their unconsciousness. The trio wouldn't be granted a moment to recover from the attack or mourn the loss of their friend, however. A white mist was crawling forward from the Everfree, followed by the long, low, sound of a war horn. Looking to the treeline, the three could see what looked like well-armored Diamond Dogs, marching forwards with the mist in perfect formation. Remnant diggers and warriors laying at the edge of the treeline were slaughtered quickly and without hesitation as the Core Hounds moved around and filled in ranks. A perfectly held wall of death was headed straight towards Retort, Selenia, and Javelin.
