Tempest shrugged, "My guess? They pumped some sort of hallucinogenic into the library, or at least got you with something." She answered simply, "So you couldn't point anyone out even if you managed to regain some of the memories from the encounter."

Hawthorne nodded slowly. That was a possible explanation, though it hardly guaranteed Tempest's theory was correct. In fact, he strongly doubted that was the case. If anything, he was still leaning towards what he had thought originally, that the undead (or at least some sort of rogue undead Aeolus) were behind the whole thing. Now Tempest was offering him protection, but that also meant burying himself into her criminal organization...
Well... what did he really have to lose? He had no house, he wasn't even sure if he still had a job, going back to the city probably meant being taken to an asylum (or if Tempest's theory was correct, possibly being killed). The only other option he could think of was fleeing to The Hollows.
"Maybe you're right. Maybe you're not. I don't know. But you clearly seem to care and know more about what's going on then Gregoros and the rest of the city government. If your theory is correct, I'm clearly better off with you. And if you're not, and there's something worse behind this... I'd rather be with you than Gregoros. If you can keep me safe from whatever's behind this, I'll do what I can."

Tempest's beak curled up in a triumphant smile, she leaned forwards, "Oh don't worry, I'll work you to the bone. At least with us you don't have to worry about being left to the undead. We've already gotten everything we needed out of 'live' undead." She gave the underside of his beak a stroke with her talon, the magic in it making Hawthorn'es beak shudder.
"Keep him here while I verify his story." Tempest ordered, getting up and promptly leaving Hawthorne in the room alone with the guards who grinned at each other.
"Guess we might as well give you an initiation." One of them said, sticking a stick in the griffon's beak. "Here, bite down on this, it helps with the pain, trust me."

Tempest seemed way too glad Hawthorne had accepted her offer, and he didn't think that indicated something good. His beak shuddered as she stroked his beak with her gauntlet, feeling the powerful magic inside him. That was indication enough not to get on her bad side.
And then he was alone, with the two guards, who had put a stick in his mouth.
"Here, bite down on this. It helps with the pain, trust me."
What had he gotten himself into?

After being throughly beaten in order to be initiated into Tempest's gang, Hawthorne was finally released by the guards and allowed to wait until they got the confirmation from Tempest that it was okay to take him to their headquarters. At which point the griffon was blindfolded and dragged to the deck of a zeppelin, at least he could tell it was a zeppelin because of the noises. He had no idea where it was flying nor where in Royal Rocks it took off from.
All he could do was sit in the dark and wait.

Hawthorne groaned after the guards had given him his "initiation", but did his best to keep it from being too loud. It was probably some stupid hold-over that the triad members only practiced because they had been pummeled during their initiation. The professor sure hoped this wasn't a sign of things to come.
After a while, Hawthorne was blindfolded and dragged off to a zeppelin. After his beating, all he really wanted to do right now was lay on the ground, which it seemed he'd have plenty of time to do. He didn't want to think, he didn't want to move. All he wanted to do was sit in the dark and wait.

Hawthorne was not allowed to see until he was dragged off from the zeppelin inside the base, at which point he was assigned a room (he shared his with a particularly large griffon called Achaius, who from what Hawthorne figured was a deep contact in Equestria).
He had nothing to unload into the room and his room had no windows to look out from, but fortunately there was a shower cubicle in the back of the room, which allowed Hawthorne to finally get the blood out of his feathers. Not long after a short griffon mechanic came by to inspect his arm, the mechanic fixed some dents and oiled up the arm and it appeared brand new. From that point he was just left alone, which was a good time for him to take a rest as it appeared he wouldn't be bothered until he was called.

Finally Hawthorne was taken off the zeppelin and into Tempest's headquarters, at which point his blindfold was removed. He was given a room, which he'd be sharing with a large griffon named Achaius. From what he could tell, his roommate seemed to be a contact within Equestria, meaning the professor might have the room to himself for a while.
He was disappointed about the lack of a window. Not that he'd ever actually been able to see the valley from his house in Royal Rocks, but at least having fresh air was nice. At least there was a shower, which Hawthorne used to finally clean himself up and remove the blood from his feathers. Shortly thereafter, a mechanic arrived to inspect his arm, fixing it up and oiling it until it looked as good as new. The professor was surprised, having been worried that his artificial appendage wouldn't be able to be maintained after leaving Royal Rocks. But in fact, the mechanic had done an excellent job.
Now Hawthorne was alone, very tired, and sore from his "initiation". Right now sleep sounded like a good idea, especially since he hadn't gotten a full night's sleep the previous evening. Even if he was called somewhat soon, a nap would do him wonders. The griffon climbed into his bed, laying his head down and quickly dozing off.
