"I send it back into the forest, and if it's not compliant, I kill it. We don't keep monsters for observation, too dangerous. They know better than to come out here, so when they do, you can bet they don't have any good intentions." Ranger explained quickly, moving the team further into the forest.
"This is the second line of traps, these are meant to trap or incapacitate monsters, you can see bear traps, pitfalls, tranquilizer dart traps, the usual." He gestured at the traps, this set for all sizes, ponies shouldn't be in this part of the forest anyway. "Further in we have the absolutely deadly traps, meant to kill anything that triggers them, from giant swinging logs to spike pits, metal wire, knife traps and what have you."
"You want to go check them or would you rather stay out here?"

Kuruka took a good, long look at the traps laid out before her. A strange way of setting them up, she would have thought it would be the opposite. She wondered what the beast master thought of it. Possibly a good question to ask.
"What does your beast master think of your attempt to kill the monster first? I would have thought they would want it the other way around, unless the infestation has become so bad Equestria has declared war on the Everfree." Kuruka thought on this possibility. "I suppose it could also be to protect the citizens from the traps, perhaps?"
Ranger's last question sounded almost like a challenge. Kuruka snorted and swished her tail a bit. "I suppose it would be beneficial to examine the others. You never know when you will need something that... final, in your defenses."

"Of course we need to check them." Storm Shroud commented, remaining hovered above the two as he looked down at them, "If we're coming OUT of the Everfree Forest, for some reason, I'd rather know where and what the most deadliest traps look like rather than trying to guess. Chances are if we're coming out of the forest, it might be in a quick escape with no time to carefully search."
He thought he made a good point, anyway. Really, he was already formulating ideas for traps in his head, and he wanted to be able to compare the deadliest ones to those they had seen so far.
"...Just so you know, however, if it were up to me, I'd keep and observe a caught monster. Maybe put it in a reinforced pen somewhere, and observe its habits. Maybe it'd give better insight into how they work and why they came to the edge in the first place." He noted, cocking his head at Ranger.

"Well she doesn't really know. The lethal traps are a very recent addition, after the last Salamander attack. I just can't let anything get through to Ponyville. If they got out of the forest she and I would be the first to be attacked."
"They get away." Ranger said, "Hard to construct something strong enough to hold a salamander or a manticore. And the little buggers we already know all about." Ranger explained carefully showing them deeper into the woods, noting the decomposing Salamander body he slayed the other day and the log trap that it sprung.
"Smashed into the side of its head and paralyzed his side. Was easy picking after that." Ranger explain, continuing to show them the other traps. There was a large variety of traps, from spiked pitfalls, to knife shooting. "So yeah, these won't work on a dragon or something with half a brain, but they're effective enough so far. The monsters that come out of the woods are so aggressive they don't seem to pay attention to traps."
He looked around, making sure he hasn't forgotten anything, "Hopefully I'll be able to remove these soon. Don't know what's been going on with this forest but it's getting tiring."

Kuruka pursed her lips, not really liking that her questions were ignored. Oh well, she thought as she followed the stallions further in, I probably answered my own question, anyway.
Kuruka didn't show much reaction to the stench that came as they passed the decaying Salamander corpse. Showing revulsion to death only revealed a fear of it, in her opinion, and fear tended to attract what was feared.
"This salamander attacked recently? Or did it die to your traps?"

(I've got a bit of writer's block for this thread for now. Please continue, and consider Storm Shroud to be present, but quiet. I don't want to hold you back because I can't write.)

"This is the salamander that killed my last subordinate." Ranger affirmed, looking over at it, "If you need a reason to why you need to kill the monster here, this is why. Besides, we don't want any innocent ponies going near the woods for a dare ending up on a pike."
Ranger continued, and then began to demonstrate the mechanisms behind all of his traps, and the reasoning for their placements. One of the traps was the most bizarre. It was simply group of nests for what had to be the noisiest murder of crows in Equestria. Ranger explained, "If something that big ever tramples through here, we'll know about it. After the Ursa Minor incident we had a while back, I figured it wouldn't hurt to make this in case the mother ever decided to have a bite out of the village."
