Manehattan, a city that never slept and a metropolis of a size and manifold life that was rarely seen in this intensity anywhere in Equestria. A city that told you, when you could make it here...
Morrow Rose recalled she made quite a things here, including making some upper class uptight snobs quite angry and her family's neighbors fall out of the bed early. Though, this all didn't happen because of mean intentions, she was just an early morning pony, to answer the later fact and for the first - well, she couldn't stand the extreme difference - as she saw it - between the rich high society and the working ponies of this city that had so much and still not all could participate.
Eventually she had left her birthplace in the docks of Manehattan and her family's new home in the inner city for a new start in Appleloosa. If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere... Didn't that Flank Sinatra colt say so? Well, here I am again, Big Apple? Did you miss me?
Morrow's thought of trains - the next station would be meet-your-family-again - derailed as her pet bird Singasong got her attention with an alerted chirping.
"What's it, sweetie?", the delivery Pegasus looked up to see herself the big crowd she day dreamy walked into. Dodging some fancy dressed and rich looking ponies who did not look where they were walking, Morrow found the ponies acted in general pretty nervous, like a bunch of headless chickens.
Her ears all on attention she overheard the one or other conversation. Grey Shadow... was the one thing she could hear again and again despite the loud murmuring and chatter that was so typical for Manehattan streets.
The Grey Shadow? But, isn't that just an old ponies tale. Meant for young fillies and colts who ask too much? If you are not nice, the Shadow takes away your toys? That was what she recalled from years ago, but she was also puzzled that the Manehattan ponies were so nervous then. Maybe somepony took up that old name...
She shrugged undecided. As interesting that sounded like, she could only stay a few days off work and would spend most of the time with her family, likely. Still, I wonder...
That was when she near fell over as someone ran into her. She was just about to get up again - she quickly checked and her old news pony hat was safe on her head - as Singasong darted away above the crowd of ponies toward an alleyway between two apartment buildings.
Quickly Morrow galloped after her pet bird, not spending time to apologize to some fancy rich ponies she ran into, as this, time, was of value now!
She made it to the alleyway just to see a shadow of a pony run around a corner, with her her pet bird waiting there for her to catch up. Don't they say animals have a sixth sense? Or was it the seventh? Anyhoof, a shadowy pony that runs away? ...it can't be, how could it!
Still, her curiosity was up and she galloped again, in hot pursuit, her pet bird again taking up the role of a scout ahead. One after one they passed around corner, the alleyways leading into an entirely different part of the town. The apartment blocks looked all a bit dirtier and fine dust and rust was to be seen here and there. Barely ever the sun shone here and all was in perpetual twilight. Once she shouted out to the other pony to stop, but they clearly kept running. Suspicious!
That was when the delivery Pegasus and her pet bird arrived in an especially shadowy alleyway, the unknown pony just a mere shadow among shadows. Still, Morrow meant to see some details as she stared down - or tried to - the mystery pony in the dead end alleyway.
Then it just disappeared. There was no glittery effects as of an unicorn's magic, or at least Morrow couldn't see it - and the shadow pony - Grey Shadow?! - was gone.
She trotted up and down the dead end way, but there was nothing, no trace, no secret door, as far as she could tell - nothing... Either way I start to see ghosts or I just tried to catch a legend...
Feeling uneasy she waved Singasong to follow her and slowly she trotted her way back to the main street she had left a while ago. There was still much of a crowd and on a second sight she recognized quite a hoof-full of private investigators and guards.
"What in ... whatever ... is happening at the Big Apple?", she said, more to herself, finding herself and her pet bird next to a scene just as unusual. A stallion with a Celestia-like long mane, equipped with quite a great set of camera items talked with a pretty old stallion, while other ponies stopped and looked every now and then.
Interesting enough this wasn't all far from where she started following the mystery pony earlier. Maybe, with a Celestia and Luna given great bit of luck... "Uhm, excuse me, Mr ... Camera colt?", he looked vague familiar, but she had other thins on her mind, "You heard of that Grey Shadow fellow? Nothing big, I just happened to have followed some mystery shadowy pony and I was wondering of your camera was pointing that way by coincidence? If not, no worries... I saw enough for a vague mug shot either way."
She looked up to Singsong looking down at her from a comfy position on her hat. A slight shudder ran down her back. Just WHAT did I get into here?

Klepto watched as the pegasus pony he had met the other night trotted over to him. "Nah. Mainly park benches and alleyways," he retorted to the Sea Swell's question, only half joking. "And what are you doing here? Don't you have music to right or walls to vandalize? Or did you come here to trip over my bag again?" Klepto asked lightheartedly.
He turned his attention to the numerous detectives bustling about before looking back at Sea Swell. "Seriously, though, I'm not sure a place like this is safe for a filly like you," he said, nudging the pegasus with his elbow. "You've got to be very careful about the company you keep. Any one of these ponies could be a thief." Klepto motioned towards the colt who had just interviewed him and the elderly unicorn. "If you're not careful, you could end up with your own apartment robbed. And then you'd have every detective within a 500 mile radius on your street walking about, writing stuff in their notepads, and pretending like they're making progress."
Klepto laughed to himself before looking back up at the director pony and the elderly unicorn, noticing that another brown-pelted, bespectacled colt had joined them. "Sheesh. It sure is getting crowded. Any reason why we're just standing around here while Detective Joe and his Gang of Gumshoes try to make themselves feel important?" Klepto was finding it ridiculous how many detectives were needed just for one little thief. He was starting to believe that maybe the ponies in this city really wouldn't have to worry about getting robbed so often if they didn't call in the cavalry every time a snow globe went missing from the local gift shop.

Sea chuckled at the sarcastic comment. "Yeah yeah, laugh it up, Klepto. I don't think I need to be making more trouble for these morons anyway, looks like they already got their hooves full," she said, referring to the detectives around them.
"Anyway, what do ya mean it's not safe for me? Are you worried about me now?" she said with a grin. "You been in my apartment. You seen the junk I keep in there. That stuff's worth more in sentimental value than anything else. I don't see why this 'Grey Shadow' or whatever would want to steal anything of mine. And if he tried, I'll make sure I'll mess him up myself." Sea spoke in a rather light-hearted tone, but she was serious. All of her music equipment she kept in her apartment was how she made her living, after all, and she couldn't afford to replace them.
"You seem to have a pretty strong opinion about these detectives around here," Sea added. "Why would that be?" A thought suddenly hit her. "Maybe you really are an undercover agent on a secret mission! I bet ya got some intel saying that the Grey Shadow was in Manehattan, and you're here to catch him!" she joked, remembering the comment Klepto had made several nights ago on her roof. She glanced toward the old stallion and the camcorder-using colt and noticed that the crowd suddenly became bigger. "Well, Mr. Undercover Agent Posing As A Hobo, if you are on a mission to catch this 'Grey Shadow' guy, maybe you should hop to it before any more folks get robbed. I'll follow your lead," the pegasus pony said jokingly.

Realizing that perhaps the brown camerapony was too busy to speak with him (after all, he was in the middle of an interview!), Bygone looked around for some other pony that might be able to tell him what was going on. The sea of unfamilar faces flashing by without a sideways glance at the next pony over brought back old memories, from the time when he was small enough to be trampled by the uncaring masses if he wasn't careful. He was feeling pretty depressed, looking around for a pony that would do more than hurry past.
His spirits lifted somewhat as he noticed a pair of ponies glancing at him; Bygone figured that they might be helpful. He trotted over to the pair, still somewhat apprehensive. One was a golden-brown stallion with a blonde mane; the other was brown like himself and had a mane that was curly and blue. The history student felt himself clamming up just looking at the brown pegasus mare.
Darn it, why do I always feel so nervous around nice-looking mares? Why can't I just act naturally? thought Bygone. He swallowed nervously as he approached speaking distance. Unconsciously as he started asking his question he found himself directing his conversation towards the other stallion.
"Hi, um, excuse me, I was wondering if you two could maybe help me out? I'm just getting back into town and I don't know what all these policeponies are here for. Could you tell me, please?"

"Riiiiiight. This is all just part of my top secret, undercover mission." Klepto responded to Sea sarcastically. "In fact," Klepto said, holding out a hoof towards the big crowd of detectives and slowly moving it to the right, "This whole thing is just a diversion! A distraction to confuse the Grey Shadow and make him worried about getting caught. And while he's too busy being scatter-brained about all this, I'll leap out at him and catch him. And then I'll be praised back at the Department of Equestrian Security for a job well done."
Klepto put his hoof down and looked at Sea. "Of course, because I told you all this, they're probably going to have to terminate you. This stuff is on a need-to-know basis, and they can't let just any old filly get away knowing about it." Klepto paused to slowly shake his head in mock pity. "Now you've got thieves and government assassins to worry about. I sure would hate to be in your hooves."
Klepto looked up to see the second colt with glasses and brown pelt walking up to them. He seemed kind of nervous, like a sad, little puppy that had just done something to make itself seem kind of nervous. Klepto listened to the colt's question before responding. "Oh this?" Klepto raised a hoof to point to the detectives. "It's nothing really. This Grey Shadow guy just robbbed a couple of stores and now every detective and their mother is trying to act like they're figuring out how he did it. Sea here would love to tell you all about it, but unfortunately, she's got her own government assassin-related issues to worry about. Isn't that right, Sea?" Klepto turned and gave Sea a teasing smile, wondering how she'd react.

As Action continued to film, unaware of his surroundings, a certain brown-pelted unicorn tapped him on the shoulder and asked him about the Gray Shadow. However, much to the pegasus' chagrin, Action just ignored him. The colt simply shrugged and went on his way to talk to "Lantern" and Sea Swell. Then it clicked...
'Action, you bucking foal! You completely disregarded that colt! Apologize right now!' Sun Stroke's voice rang in his head. With a sudden twitch of the eye, Action stopped recording and turned off the camcorder. He set it on the ground gently and faced Stray. Smack. Facehoofed ((OOC: facepalm)).
"...Yeah...I'm really sorry Mr. Stray. I really don't mean to disrespect you, but I have to postpone your interview. I just can't ignore somepony like that...I feel like a jerk. So please --" Action took lowered his head, his long mane brushing against the snow. Closing his eyes, he spoke softly:
"Thank you for the autograph. You're my brilliant inspiration. Can I come back to you? I'll get back with you momentarily...I-I just feel responsible for being so rude to that colt."
Action raised his head and turned his head to face the gentlecolt with a neatly combed mane, but to his surprise, the unicorn had been replaced with a delicate mahogany-colored pegasus with dainty speckles all across the pelt. Her mane was a soft apricot color that was styled short, however, it was covered by a Jay Gatsby with a small songbird perched atop of it.
"Why yes...the Gray Shadow's returned to Manehattan...and you said you were tracking an ugly mug of sorts?" Action spoke with a professional tone but quickly changed as he the noticed the filly's look of disdain in her brilliant blue eyes, anxiety coursing throughout her body.
She looks so much like Sun Stroke when she's nervous. Poor girl...Action gave a warm smile and spoke with a more friendly, but concerned tone in his voice:
"You also wanted to know if my camera caught something? I can check if you like." Action removed the film reel and began to examine the strip. He passed through all of "Lantern's" interview and then got to Stray's.
As he held it up to the early morning sun, Action noticed Morrow Rose had run into frame along the background. He couldn't believe his eyes. He had been so fixated on his long-time hero that he didn't see her running by. He continued to run through the ream, he saw Marrow for at least 10-15 frames.
"Wow, that's quite a shock I didn't know that you were chasing a Gr--" Action stopped. He looked closer at the frames and looked away. Then looked back again.
"OH MY CELESTIA-LUNA-SMOOGLEBERY-ELEMENTS-OF-HARMONY OVER WHITE RICE!!! I CAUGHT THE GRAY SHADOW ON CAMERA!!!!" Action Shot's volume had been so profound that the particles became bouncy balls, resonating across buildings and diffusing the echo a quarter mile into the fray of the crowd.
...Shouldn't have said that out loud...

Sea smirked at the earth pony's sarcastic remarks. "I knew the government was evil, but assassinating a poor up-and-coming filly like me?"
The young rapper looked to see the strange broken-horned unicorn walking over to her and Klepto. Sea noticed his nervous gaze as he approached, and when he spoke, he seemed to be directing his speech toward Klepto rather than her. Geez, what's this guy's problem? It's not like I bite... Sea thought, casually flicking her tail behind her in mild annoyance.
Upon hearing Klepto's answer to the unicorn's question, however, she giggled and quickly forgot about her annoyance. "Yeah, mane," she said jokingly to the two colts, deciding to play along with Klepto's joke. "I'm starting a new movement against the government and its oppression. They wanna silence the revolution, so they gonna try to knock me off." Sea thrust a hoof in the air with a grin. "Power to the ponies, brothers, because the revolution will not be televised!"
As she was finishing, a loud voice's shouting startled her. Looking over, it seemed to come from the direction of the camcorder-holding colt, who now seemed to be talking to a pegasus. Sea looked toward Klepto again and said, "Hey, Mr. Secret Agent Hobo, it sounds like that filly with that camera you were talkin' to is doing ya job for ya." Sea glanced curiously over toward the camera-holding colt, wondering about his odd choice of words in his exclamation. And, of course, the news couldn't have come from someone who talks like a regular person... she thought.

The brown history student blinked. He must have misheard the blonde colt. The Gray Shadow? Here and now?
Why not? I mean, most myths DO contain at least a grain of truth... thought Bygone. Maybe this one had more than just a grain.
Bygone wasn't sure what to make of the "Government assassins" and whatnot that the two were talking about; they seemed serious enough at first, but after Sea said something about a "Secret Agent Hobo" the brown colt was pretty sure that they were messing around.
Feeling kind of bad (and still uneasy) about sort of ignoring the filly, he tried to say something clever.
"Uh... yeah, viva la resistance! And whatnot." Bygone laughed nervously. You know, I never asked your names, come to think-"
A shout from behind startled Bygone. He turned around to see that the brown colt that he had just left was in a frenzy about something on his camera. The history student was intrigued, but stayed with the two strange (but friendly enough) ponies for the time being.

Penn woke up quite a deal more quickly than usual. He was barely this chipper before a cup of coffee, which surprised him. This also brought a lightness to his mood, as he was full of energy and ready to run his shop with gusto. Perhaps today will be a good one after all? He hummed cheerfully to himself as he prepared his lunch; a dandelion sandwich with a side of carrots.
He walked out his apartment room and kicked the door closed behind him, making his way outside into the busy streets of Manehattan. He sniffed the air and sighed. Though he felt great, the foul odor this section of the city shared remained, like it had for years. He shrugged and galloped to his shop, which was only a few miles south of his home, and he needed to get his heart rate up to work off the large amount he had eaten the previous day.
He grabbed a discarded newspaper and read it as he walked, holding it in front of him with his magic. He flipped through the pages quickly, barely noting the bad news before him. He'll be damned if his happy mood was to be whisked away so quickly! Theft, yadda yadda, Grey Menace, yadda yadda, unrest in the city...Snore. Penn thought little of it for now, as he was under the illusion that nopony would even bother to steal from him.
His blissful attitude and chipper and happy mood was unfortunately too good to be true, as he approached his shop, he found one of the windows in it had been broken.
"Oh for Celestia's sake...I can't have a good day, can I?!"
He walked inside and investigated his shop, with his spirits plummeting. Many of his smaller products were missing, but none of his larger works were even touched. He would have sighed in relief if the overall price of the products missing weren't in the thousands. He stomped out of his shop and looked up at the sign. It was a spinning record with a paintbrush in the hole. "Sounds of Art" was the name, which was decorated with musical notes around the text.
He sighed in defeat before looking around once more, finding the newspaper he had tossed aside a moment ago. He flattened it out on the ground and examined it closely.
"Grey Menace, huh? He's the only thief anypony knows of around here as of late...What would he want with my stuff, of all things?"
He looked up in the sky, pondering his own question.
"Well, it doesn't matter. Somepony needs to pay for this, for breaking my window, stealing my goods, and worst of all...ruining my good mood."

Klepto looked over at the colt who had just interviewed him when he heard him exclaim something about catching the Grey Shadow on film. Klepto gave the colt a blank stare for a few seconds before turning back to Sea Swell. "He probably meant, 'I've caught a blur that could vaguely resemble the Grey Shadow if you squint at it hard enough on camera,' or something. I'm not too concerned. A good secret agent knows that not everything is going to be what you think it is," Klepto responded mockingly, giving Sea a nudge with his elbow. "Anyways..."
Klepto turned back to the colt that had approached him and Sea. "I'm Klepto, and this is Sea Swell." Klepto leaned in closer to the colt, speaking in a softer voice that was still plenty audible enough for Sea to hear. "She's not really a revolutionary. I'm just humoring her before I take her back to the happy house." Klepto stood back up and resumed his normal volume. "So now that you have our names, I think it's only fair that you give us yours."
He then looked back out the crowd of detectives, letting his mind wander as he waited for the colt to answer. His conscious drifted back to the events of early that morning, before the sun had even decided to get its lazy flank out of bed. It was then that he had committed his first actual theft within the city, robbing a local arts and music store. He would have held the event in higher esteem, but things hadn't gone as smoothly as he had planned. Normally he would have taken time to pick-lock the front door, but he had decided after a while that it would probably be quicker to make a dirty entrance, do his thing, and get out than spend so much time fumbling with the lock before getting noticed.
Making an exception to his usual style, Klepto had hefted a brick through the window before swiping some of the cash from the register and some of the smaller items from the shelves. Nothing too big, and nothing more than he could carry in his bag. He had made off with several CDs and some other stuff before taking his leave. It wasn't too big a haul, as he had had to be a lot faster than he would have liked, but it was enough. He could probably get a fair bit for the CDs.
Klepto looked back at the colt, an idea popping into his head. "Before you answer that, though, do either want to buy some arts and music stuff? I can sell them for cheap." He looked back and forth between Sea and the colt before continuing. "I got CDs, some paint brushes, uh... a drawing pad I think."

Sea giggled at the unicorn's 'viva la resistance' comment. "You're corny, dude," she said teasingly. "Yeah, actually, I'm just your regular filly outta Filly. I'm not really starting any revolution," she explained to the unicorn after hearing Klepto's snide remark to him about taking her to the 'happy house.’ "Not yet, anyway." The pegasus pony grinned at the glasses-wearing unicorn.
But when she heard Klepto's sudden question about buying art and music supplies, however, she became curious. "Hey, what’s the deal with all this stuff? Did you suddenly get a job as a salespony when you heard about the Grey Shadow coming back, or something?” Sea thought back to how evasive Klepto had been about her questions several days ago when they first met. “You didn't try to sell me anything the first time we met."

Morrow shifted her weight from one hoof to another and back again, waiting for the camera pony in front of her to react to her. Then again, in retrospective, she couldn't tell anymore who was waiting for who to talk and in all honestly she was a bit distracted by the Celestia-like mane of the stallion, halfway wondering if it would start to float magically and sparkle any given moment.
She nodded in response, calm at first, as she thought, but her heart was still somehow racing from the chase she just had been at. It wasn't making matters much easier that everypony around her was of average pony size and thus taller than her; except of some foals accompanying their parents.
Also, the professional interviewer voice just nagged at her memory, brining up something that had happen a while ago - has it been 2 years by now? - in the same city. The questions were just as clear and direct. If she would have heard something about a pony who wrote a rather harsh article about the local aristocracy and bourgeoisie. She got through them somehow, but she wasn't sure how she did keep calm back then and not stutter and sweat.
The tension building up in her muscles loosened though just as quickly as it came up. She must have had imagining things, since now the stallion sounded more warm and friendly, matching the colors of his pelt and eyes rather, than cold professionalism would have.
"That would be a funny coincidence", she eventually replied, breathing in and out deep, as she finally got to relax. The delivery Pegasus smiled weakly. "-but, sure, let's have a look! Oh, I'm Morrow Rose", a cheerful chirp from above interrupted her introduction, "Yes. That'd be Singasong, my pet bird. Without her senses I would not have kept track with that mysterious pony-"
Curiously she trotted over to look how and what the camera pony - what was his name again? - was doing there precisely. She was about to ask as she stopped mid-sentence, mid-word even with talking.
The next thing she knew was herself sitting on her hind legs, her ears ringing, her heartbeat giving speed again and the sound of Singasong's wings flapping wildly. Looking up she could tell how her pet bird just got comfortable again at the usual resting place on her hat.
Eventually the impressions of loud noises gathered together to memories of words in her mind - she realized what the over-excited other pony just had shouted, "The Grey... the real deal? The Grey Shadow? I was about to chase the- Grey- Shadow? What did I get into here?" Then an idea popped up in her head, "That Shadow, I did see it disappear in a dead end alleyway. Without a trace! Does that help somehow?"

Action covered his mouth with a hoof and looked around frantically. Oh Luna, I'm an idiot, I'm an idiot, I'm an idiot, I'm idiot... The thought kept repeating over and over in his head. He began to check the ream again and again to make sure he saw it correctly. The image caused him to shake violently, thinking about the outcome of his stupidity. What if the Grey Shadow had heard him? Would private investigators clamor around him all in attempt to seize the evidence without a warrant? The possibilities kept buzzing around his head until everything clicked in place.
Suddenly, Action remembered Morrow Rose had introduced herself to him and as he slapped himself in the face with a hoof, he took a long-winded deep breath and calmed back down. He turned to face the filly who was now on the ground, with Singsong flapping uncontrollably thanks to his erratic behavior, which caused stallion to flush scarlet.
"Hello, Miss Rose. I am Action Shot, head of Revelations Primo. I am so sorry about that...I...I apologize for overreacting in that manner. I'm trying not to be so...so passionate. I hope your pet bird is okay," Action stated in an apologetic manner as he held out a hoof to help the pegasus up. He turned his eyes away from her in embarrassment after finishing his sentence. By this time, Singsong had nuzzled back into the place of Morrow's hat.
Good job Action Shot, you scared her silly. Action's heart sank...but there was no time to waste. Man up Action Shot, just play it cool from here. He turned his head back to face her.
"Yes, I...I really think so. Back in that alley, huh? I should go check there then, thanks for letting me know." Action went back to his camera and packed everything up into his saddle bags.
"Thanks for the information, Miss Rose."

The thought that his new acquaintance 'Klepto' might actually be a thief that was selling stolen goods was so impossible that it never even crossed Bygone's mind.
"You're selling art stuff...? Um, well, I guess if you have any Beethoofen CDs. Do you normally sell this kind of stuff?" An idea struck Bygone. "OH! Are you one of those ponies that just sells all kinds of different stuff, like a..." the brown stallion struggled for a good word, "like a- flea market! That's it, like a flea market."
"Oh, right, I almost forgot... my name's Bygone Era. I study history at Canterlot University."
Bygone was pretty sure that Sea was only teasing when she called him corny, but that little niggling doubt in the back of his mind just bothered him.
Does she not like me or something? Did I do something wrong? Darn it, Bygone...

As Action packed up his stuff back into his saddle bags, he trotted across the street from where Morrow Rose and made his way into the alleyway where the supposed "Gray Shadow" had appeared on his film reel. There wasn't any way this could be possible. How could he even RECOGNIZE that that it was the Gray Shadow? Well, logically, he thought, the image was gray and shadow-like, so BAM, Gray Shadow! Action Shot made his way into the deeper parts of the alleyway. It was really dark and barely anything could be seen. " Dang it all to Smoogleberry, I should've grabbed a light kit from the studio. That would've helped me greatly." He inched his way as the darkness had kind of built up around him. The alleyway had been surrounded with bricked-layered buildings, there was no way to escape...at least by any means of avoiding magic, destruction and/or flying. Finally getting to the edge of the alleyway, Action placed a hoof against the bricks. He began pushing them one by one, seeing if any of them had a sort of "secret button" that would lead to a hidden basement. " ...What are you doing Action Shot? This isn't is a movie, nothing's going to happ--" Suddenly one of the bricks fell out of the building. He picked it up and examined it thoroughly. It had been hollowed out and he shook it to see if anything was inside. A pocket watch had fallen out, it looked like it had come from a wealthy pony, given that the engravings were very ornate. " What is this? Did the figure literally ran back here just to hide a pocket watch?! Who does this even belong to?" Opening it, the hands were fully-functioning and tickling appropriately. The time had been correct, indicating that it probably either had been stolen by somepony or it was put there for safe keeping. He set the watch into his saddle bag and pulled out his camcorder. After re-applying the film, he flipped it on and began recording. Through the focus lens, barely anything could be seen. This is didn't matter, however, for Action began to vocalize a simple monologue: Well, it appears that after discovering a mysterious figure on film thanks to a petit pegasus, I have seemed to have discovered a pocket watch in this alleyway. It appears to belong to aristocracy. Its heavy, kind of feels like gold, but I could be wrong. I will take it to a watch maker for further examination... Action shut off the camera and continued to survey the watch, looking over every detail, hoping to get something out of it.
