The comment that Sea Swell made about the bullwhip and the fedora made Boulder laugh. Adventuring may be exciting, but it was still far different than what they made it looks like on the silver screens. But right when he was about to make a response, a small flurry of items just dropped down on him from above. The things dropped seemed to be clothing for a colder environment.
Boulder poked his head out of the stuff dropped on him and shook it around, trying to figure out what in the world just happened. From above, a brown, much older looking male pegasus in a red pocketed vest with a refined tie smiled.
"Fedoras and bull whips are nice, but are rather impractical in the field. Besides, why use a whip to bridge gaps when you can just fly?" He joshed, lowering in altitude and standing by the group. He had a great stature about him, being a pony of an older age, but still coming off as a striking and well fit individual. The only thing that seemed unkempt about this pony were that his ears seemed to be ratted out a bit, probably due to some kind of accident. Other than that, a very handsome stallion he was.
"Pa! What was that all about?" Boulder didn't like to be taken by surprise like that.
The brown stallion pegasus laughed and replied. "I'll explain in just a moment." He turned and glanced at the two mares whom Boulder had been accompanied by. "First, it'd be rude of you not to introduce me to your new friends, son."
"Right..." Boulder shook off the loose material that hung over him, letting it all drop to the ground. He went to stand next to the unexpected drop-in guest. "You two, this is my father; Professor Geode Dash, head of the geological and expedition department of Manehattan College. Pa, this is Splatter Paint and Sea Swell. We were just talking."
Extending out a hoof for a shake, Geode smiled like the refined gentleman that he is. "An honor to make your acquaintance, ladies."

Splatterpaint nodded at the idea of a trade, liking the idea of getting to listen to some new music for a change, "Gee, thanks Sea Swell!" Splatterpaint put the CDs in her pack Before turning to Boulder.
She giggled at Sea Swell's joke about the whip and fedora, remembering the old adventure movies she used to watch with her parents. "I loved those movies!" She was sure that it was about time to say farewell, but suddenly another pony appeared.
So this was Boulder's father, the professor. What an odd time for him to suddenly appear. Splatterpaint quickly examined him, noting the tattered ear. Wonder what happened. Splatterpaint pondered a bit. And what is all the supplies for? I thought Boulder Dash already had all his stuff for his project.
Splatterpaint shook the extended hoof with a smile, "Hello Professor, it's nice to meet you too. You're the head of a department? Wow, how cool!"

The brown-pelted and well-dressed stallion's sudden appearance startled Sea a bit, but she found his entrance comical. He seemed pretty fit despite his older age. Boulder introduced him as his father.
"What's good?" she said, shaking the professor's hoof after Splatter. Wait, did Boulder say he was the head of the department? Sea thought. That sounds pretty important. Maybe I could try to be at least a little less informal... "Uh, I mean... what's good, Professor? I noticed you dropped ya laundry all over ya son." Sea smiled a friendly smile.

"No fret; All good, all good. If you don't feel comfortable being formal, that's fine. I work with plenty of foals your own age, not to mention my son being of that age. I can be casual." Geode smiled and engaged in light conversation with Splatter and Sea Swell.
"Hey pa, why'd you drop all my winter gear on me?" Boulder had started to pick everything up and straighten them out, revealing a thick coat, a cap, scarf, an two sets of heavy duty boots. "Winter wrapped up the other week and I just put these things into storage."
Pulling out an envelope out of one of the pockets from his vest, he passed it along to his son for him to read. "Here, this'll answer everything. I'd like to explain more to you, but I'm due back at the college before my next class begins. Let's just say I think I found you a very valuable lead, so I'm glad I was able to catch you before you left the city."
Boulder's expression went flat. "You're shipping me off somewhere far north, aren't you." Not a question, but a rhetorical statement.
"You'll find out soon enough. For now, I've got to bolt." Geode turned around and nodded to the girls. "Sea Swell. Splatterpaint. Keep it real, yeah?" Getting a running start, Geode darted for the crowds of ponies before soaring over their heads, returning to the campus.
Eying the envelope his father had just passed the buck on in a hurry, Boulder rolled his eyes and sighed as he opened up the unsealed letter. He begun muttering the letter to himself, which seemed to be a quick note written from one of his father's colleges from out of town. Gathering what was being said, it was more than likely a response to something Geode sent out earlier. Upon finishing it up, Boulder was all smiles.
"Oh, now THIS is something cool!" Boulder took the letter and held it in front of Splatterpaint and Sea Swell both to read for themselves. "You know that whole Feral Caverns thing going on? Seems like my pa got me a spot up there! I was planning on hitting up Canterlot since I haven't been there in a long time, but I'm down for going somewhere new with privileges."
Boulder put down his saddle bags once more, starting to make room for the stuff that his father dumped on him in a hurry, no longer vexed over it. "Man, now I wish Zak were still here. I'd want him to come along with me to check these caves out."
Looking up from his mindless shoving of his snow coat, he almost forgot about the two new friends in the making he had just met and smiled sheepishly. "Ahh... oh... heheh... sorry about that. That's just my pa pushing me into danger n' all. But hey, you guys got anything planned? Maybe you could come along! It'd be fun and would probably look good on a portfolio!"

Splatterpaint smiled; Boulder's dad was pretty nice. "Bye Professor!" she called, waving. She then turned her eyes to Boulder Dash curiously. Splat watched him read, thinking it must be something pretty cool by the looks on his face.
"What's cool? she asked, reading the note with curiosity. A trip to the Feral Caverns? She had heard about that from her parents; they had been talking about it just the other night. Apparently there had been some ponies exploring that place, but they had been killed by the winter ferals. Or something. Sounded pretty cool! Well, except for the death part. She eyed Boulder Dash enviously. He got to explore such dangerous places and go on adventures. "Wow, you're so lucky!" she grinned. "Who's Zak?"
Did she have anything planned? Nope. Nothing. "I would love to go! It sounds like so much fun, and tons of danger and stuff!" She bounced with excitement, before pausing. "But they wouldn't let me,would they? I'm too small, aren't I?" she said, looking crestfallen.

"See ya later, Doc!" Sea waved to the leaving pegasus. "So your dad seems pretty cool," she said.
She smiled at Boulder's offer. Sea was kind of itching to just go and do something crazy and fun, like go on an adventure. The last time she really did anything like that (discounting looking for the Grey Shadow, since that whole thing ended up in failure) was breaking into Fillydelphia's art closet and writing graffiti on the water tower. And that was years ago.
Then again, with money so tight, it seemed so irresponsible to do something as impulsive as join Boulder to go spelunking in some crazy caverns. Maybe if she had more money saved up, she might have been able to go. But since she didn't even have a job yet - going on a trip seemed irresponsible.
"That does sound like a lot of fun, actually... uh, but I can't," Sea said, finally resigning to stay behind. "I, uh, got a few shows lined up," Sea lied. She actually hadn't had any shows in a while, but even if she was too poor to go, she sure as hay wasn't going to let her friends know that. It would be too embarrassing. "Can't leave my fans hangin', ya know?" said with a smirk.
Sea frowned when she saw Splatterpaint so dispirited. She hated to see a friend disappointed. "Hey, you never know, right? I mean, ya went looking for the Grey Shadow after all, and he's probably way more dangerous than some creepy old caves, right?" Sure, no one ever managed to find the legendary thief, but really, that was besides the point.
"I mean, your parents also let you go sell your paintings by yourself, so hey you never know right?"

"Zakitash? Oh, he's just my best friend since I don't know when. He went back home for the break to see his folks in the Zebra Territories. Anyway..." Boulder started to get a bit more organized with working his snow gear in. He had to remove a couple of things and rearrange, but he finally got to all fit in comfortably. Unfortunately, this left little space for whatever he was going to pick up later, but he'd find a way. He just continued listening to the two girls talk for a moment as he finished up.
Upon hearing that Sea Swell had been booked with previous engagements, he frowned. Not to mention the possibility that Splatterpaint might not be able to come... what a bummer on both parts! Just when he thought he might have travel companions.
"Man, I'm sorry to hear that you won't be able to come, Sea. At least you've got some bookings! When I'm back from my spring break and when I don't have too much going on with school, you should try to tell me where you'll be playing at so I can pop in." Sticking his snout under his bags, he tossed them up and threw them onto his back. He turned to Splatter. "If you find that you are able to come, I'd say meet me down at the Grey-Horse Bus Station in about an hour and a half. I planned to catch a carriage from there to Canterlot before, but looks like I'll have to reschedule for the northern territories. If you do tag along, make sure you pack accordingly and dress warmly!"

(sorry this took so long! >.<)
"You have a zebra friend? Wow, that's so cool!" Splatterpaint had met a zebra once, when she was younger. They hadn't talked for long, but she still remembered.
Splatterpaint blinked at Sea Swell with surprise and happiness for her friend, "Wow, you're gonna have some shows? That's great, good for you!" she smiled.
She sure hoped she would be able to come, "It's not so much my parents I'm worried about. It's whoever will be leading the trip. I doubt they'll be too excited about having someone like me on the trip. And you're right. I participated in Grey Menace, that has to be worth something!" she thought for a moment, "Well, if they do say no, I guess I'll just hide in the wagon or something. I won't take no for an answer!" Splatter said determinately, her eyes glimmering with confidence. "If my folks say yes, which they probably will, I'll make sure to meet'cha at the bus stop!" she promised.
