Name: Loose Bolt
Gender: Male
Age: Adult
Species: Unicorn
Pelt Color: He's an albino and thus has a white pelt, but due to neglect it is usually coated with splotches of grease. Yes, it does make him look like a cow (or a zebra, depending on who you ask).
Mane/Tail Color & Style: White, but, like his pelt, frequently black with grease.
Eye Color: Pink
Cutie Mark: Two interlocked gears
Residence: A small flat in Canterlot
Occupation: Mechanic at Canterlot's Airship Yard
Talents, Skills: Loose Bolt is very good at fixing things, hence his job as a mechanic. Give him some time and lots of space and he can repair most anything you throw at him. He also has a talent for making things more efficient, from machines to systems and processes. He posses some basic telekinetic magic, which is very helpful in the workshop. Lastly, due to lots of time working on them, he could pilot an airship if it were to become necessary.
Likes: Quiet, cool mornings; figuring out a puzzle; puttering around in his workshop; the countryside, although he isn't able to spend much time there; reading at home after a long day's work; flying (in an airship, of course!); singing (although he's tone-deaf).
Dislikes: Any kind of social gathering, especially parties; having to talk to ponies he doesn't know; a machine that doesn't make any sense; spiders; heat waves (it can get really sweltering in his workshop); braggarts and ignoramuses.
Character Personality: Loose Bolt is, at heart, a nice guy; he's kind, helpful, and compassionate. He knows what's right and tries his best to follow his conscience. He is very good at what he does, namely, repairing things. He's officially listed as an airship mechanic, but will also do any other kind of repair work required of him. However, he finds it very difficult to interact with other ponies. He doesn't understand them, and he hates it when they don't make sense. The nuances of conversation and social relationships escape him. It doesn't help that his profession and general appearance make most other ponies think of him as some kind of a mad scientist. This all has made him very introverted and unconfident in social situations. He's found that things work out more easily when you just nod politely and do whatever ponies ask him to do. He's almost got a split personality: when in the workshop, he's creative, active, and very confident, but when he's with other ponies he is passive and withdrawn. The only way he can assert himself is to be passive-aggressive. But really, when you get to really know him, you'll see that isn't such a bad guy, and he's definitely worth befriending, if you have the patience.
Bio: Loose Bolt's parents really were mad scientists; they experimented with blending science and magic to create new technologies. However, they disappeared when Bolt was only a very young colt. No one has ever been able to track them down, although most ponies suspect it had something to do with an experiment gone wrong. Loose Bolt was raised by his father's brother, Tornado, who was an airship pilot. Tornado had never particularly desired a child, but he was a kind stallion, and grew to love his nephew as a son. Bolt had a fairly well-off childhood, if not as lavish as most Canterlot foals. His upbringing showed through, as Tornado noticed he was more interested in the mechanics of ships that the actual flying of them. He got Bolt an informal apprenticeship in the workshop, whre he grew experienced in the ways of the motor and propeller. As Bolt approached stallionhood, he was given his largest challenge. He was presented with an entire airship (albeit a small one), rundown with age, to be refitted and restored. Bolt duly began his project, carefully repairing the ship, bit by bit. After many months of effort, he was nearly finished; he just had to restore the main motor. Then the impossible happened: Bolt found a machine he couldn't fix. The motor resisted all attempts at repair; it made no sense; everything seemed to be broken, and yet nothing was actually broken. Bolt freaked out. He yelled at it, cursed it, kicked it, sobbed at it, and eventually took a wrench to it. Many times. By the time he was finished, the whole motor was in pieces. He considered giving up the field of mechanics altogether. Eventually, though, he sobered up and gave it one final try. Showing uncharacteristic determination, he worked for many, many hours. The destruction of the motor actually gave him the chance to start over. At last, missing a lot of sleep and several meals, he put the last piece in place (ironically, it was a bolt) and collapsed, not noticing that he had received his cutie mark. Not long after, he was offered a job at the airship port, and he gladly accepted. This is where he still works today, although he often takes on freelance repair jobs to bring in some extra bits.
