The unicorn didn't seem to like the fact that she had to try something smaller. It was as if she wanted to skip all the small things to practice on and go for the most complex tricks. Patience also didn't seem to be a strong quality for Magmarhyme either. The unicorn never appeared to stand still, always moving or doing something. Although Sky was not one to just stand around and do nothing, he found the pony constantly on high alert.
Magma them mentioned something about fire and water. "Oh well that's nice... wait a minute. Did you say you want to light water on fire? How exactly can you do that?" Talking with this Magmarhyme was becomming more and more confusing. Trying to light things on fire without burning them? Lighting water on fire? This fire magic that the unicorn was attempting seemed extremely hard to do, maybe even impossible in Sky's mind. He quickly passes it off as another crazy magic thing. He had seen other things that would not happen actually happen with magic, so anything was possible then.
Before Magma could answer Sky, she began to concentrate on the branch. This should be a good start. It was small, it wasn't moving, and more importantly it wasn't Sky she was trying to light on fire! Still even with the silence of the forest and the ease of this task, Magma looked like she was having a difficult time. In fact, she was concentrating so hard, Sky thought she was going to pass out or explode, whichever came first.
The branch did smoke and spark a little, but there was no flame. Definitely not what Magma had in mind Sky thought. "Um... not really," Sky said answering her question. He was unsure how she would take the failure, so he tried to soften it with advice. "Maybe instead of concentrating so hard just try to relax. No pony is forcing you to cast this spell as quickly as possible. If you relax your mind, everything else relaxes, including I would think your magic. So just try that and see how it goes."

The flicker of a grin touched her maw at the flurry of questions, the filly clearly more 'in the know' when it came to magic. Mind you, that wasn't particularly difficult to manage - Sky Rocket was a pegasus, after all.
"Y'can do anything with enough practice." She replied. Sure, the mare wasn't particularly thrilled by the idea of taking time to become the best, but in the end, it was necessary. Nopony could learn everything there is to know about magic instantaneously. Life just didn't work that way. Magmarhyme was just hoping to take the crash-course approach and ace everything as quickly as possible... which didn't seem to be happening yet. As the branch did nothing more than spark weakly, the ashen mare groaned again. What was she doing wrong?! "For the love of-!"
Frustration building, Magmarhyme took a pace backwards before turning to Sky. However, instead of engaging another string of conversation, she merely began to pace around the clearing. "What am I not getting? Maybe I should read the book - no, that'll take too long. Maybe just setting something on fire and then stopping i- yeah, but then I could set the whole forest on fire. Fun, but I'd probably get an earful." Her mutterings were mostly to herself, aggravation bringing out the words from her thoughts. She vaguely heard Sky Rocket's advice amidst her own musings, but the full understanding of what he had said didn't hit her for a good couple of minutes.
Pausing in her anxious stride, the mare shot the pegasus a glance. "Relax? It ain't my thing, but I could try it I guess." She decided finally. Only, now she needed another target.

Once again the fire unicorn tried to do the same thing the same way, and once again it failed. Sky new that continuing to try the same thing and expecting different results was a waste of time. One thing was for certain: this Magmarhyme was getting frustrated at the lack of progress.
She seemed about to want to talk to Sky Rocket again, but then she started doing her usual pacing and talking to herself. He heard something about reading a book. It wasn't like reading a book could teach you how to calm down and focus though. Then Magma said something about starting a fire and trying to put it out. What shocked him was that she thought setting the forest on fire as "fun." Sky immediately began to worry. What had he got himself into? He began to shuffle his feet anxiously and looking around. If this pony did want to burn down the forest, he needed to get away fast.
Then finally what Sky Rocket said had sunk in and she said about relaxing. "Er... um... yeah that's the spirit," Sky said as he nervously approached the unicorn, "When I get stressed, I can't fly as well, and I risk crashing into something or worse, somepony. But when I calm myself down by thinking of something happy, everything seems to flow."
Sky looked around and saw a stump nearby. "Ok. You can try to do that false fire thing on this stump rather than the log, but first try this. Close your eyes and think about something that makes you happy like a place or event, or even another pony. Then hold that image and cast your spell. Think you'd want to try that?"

For a moment, the unicorn simply stared at the strange pegasus. Think of something happy? This wasn't a filly's storybook, how in Equestria was that supposed to help? She could get focusing, or relaxing, but... besides, the last time she'd been happy? Well, Magma wasn't completely sure she ever had been. Distracted or excited, sure, but not really happy. It just wasn't on her agenda right now.
Following the colt's line of sight to the tree stump, the cogs in Magma's brain began to whirr. Maybe instead of happiness, she could use something else? It wouldn't be the first time that emotions had come into play where her magic was concerned, although that had mostly been pure rage and a lot of flames. Which was exactly what Magmarhyme was trying to avoid.
"Why are you even tryin' to help me?" Scowled Magma, circling the stump once, as if she was trying to intimidate an opponent. So many failed attempts thus far... this stupid chunk of nature wasn't going to get the better of her! As she waited for a response, the unicorn paused to focus on the offending tree stump, gaze sharpened. She could do this, come on.

Magma stared at Sky Rocket. He became nervous at the possibility of somehow offending the pony. An angry pony who can cast fire was not a good combination.
She then began circling the stump as if stalking a prey asking the fiery maned pegasus why he wanted to help. The question struck him like getting hit by a stone. "Why? I'll tell you why. It's because..." He pasused. For once in much of his life, Sky didn't know what to say. It was like there was a disconnect in his mind, preventing him from speaking. Such a simple question... why? He started feeling stupid for not answering it.
He had to say something. He couldn't just let the question out there unanswered. He readied himself to speak, hoping that what he said wasn't dumb or worse, offensive. "Well I saw you in the woods and thought you needed help, so I came down to help you. Plus you seemed to be a nice unicorn and I thought if I could help we could maybe be friends..."
Sky suddenly froze in terror after what he said. He was doing so well with the first part, but then he had to go and spill his mind to Magmarhyme. It seemed that his desire to find a friend overrode his common sense. He couldn't take it back now. All he could do is wait and hope that didn't end up a deep fried pegasus.
