Watching the exchange, she crinkled her nose once more at the boils on unicorn's legs. Maybe that armor wasn't as good of an idea as she previously thought. But she did find it a bit humorous that the fez-sporting pony was so interested in the strange reaction, and she took out her notebook and pencil to scribble a couple notes on the effects of the armor. Granted, writing with her mouth was not the best way of taking notes but she managed just the same.
Tucking the utensils under her wing for later use, she quietly entered the ruins along with the group, staring at the monstrosities that were the armored skeletons lined up along the hall. Hearing Hind Sight give a call for her to take notes, she did so and tried her best to sketch out the lovely mosaic sun. A bothered sigh left her as the sketch did the mosaic no justice but it would have to do for now.
She turned her gaze to the dark blue unicorn mare, whom had posed a very valid question that even she herself wanted to voice. Other than the ruins themselves and the magnificent breakthrough in history that it could symbolize, was there anything else within these crumbling structures that was of any note? The skeletons and armor had given a promising deal of history, and it made her curious. Yet still, she remained silent as she tucked away the notepad yet again and waited for another chance to use them.
With a glance down at her hooves she saw a tile had come out of the worn mosaic, and seemed so displaced with the rest. Carefully and quietly she nudged it into place. Now the entire seemed much more put together, despite a few more tiles missing. Stardust smiled at herself, starting to get more comfortable with the other ponies. It was good, because now maybe she'd start talking instead of shying away.

Nexus winced as she saw the boils spring up on Selenia.
"Well, I guess that settles that, then," muttered the gray mare. "Are you feeling alright, Selenia?" There was genuine concern in her voice, albeit layered behind the standard gruff projection. Seeing the fez-wearing pony approach with the sharp little tool set Tunnel on edge, although she kept herself at a distance.
The blue pony, a unicorn, asked a few good questions; insightful questions. Tunnel made a note to herself to speak with this pony, perhaps there was something beneath the quiet exterior. She did seem awfully quiet, after all... no, wait, she had said something, but nopony had responded. Interesting. She grinned inwardly as she considered toying with the blue mare further, but decided against it. Better things to do and all.
The group entered the ruins, a large hall greeting them. The sun mosaic thing on the floor was cool and all, but Tunnel was here for the adventure, not the boring history. She started wandering about in the entrance hall, examining the walls and floor for anything akin to a trap door; those always seemed fun.
The path ahead split into two directions, left and right. She heard the fez pony ask about their direction. Looking left and right, she couldn't decide. Faced with a dilemma, the spelunker pulled out a bit coin and tossed it in the air.
"Call it in the air, Blue!" she joked, gesturing to Cloudy. After she'd said it, saying 'Blue' seemed rather insensitive and rude; hopefully she'd get all of their names down soon enough, hopefully without having to ask them directly.

"We'll be going to the right, the armory and the commander's office are there. To the left is usually the barracks and infirmary, as well as ... an unpleasentness." He mentioned oddly, then adding, "The raising room... where they bring their dead and... send them back out to fight..." He explained calmly. Though this did not as much as make him wince, he knew this was a sensitive topic around other ponies.
Hind Sight had to admire the courage behind such a great tactical decision, the Equites used the undead to prevent further losses on their living. But using the undead also spread fear among the ranks of their enemies, as well as bolster their own power significantly. Though it was a regrettable solution, it was, by far, the most effective one. Despite that however, the Equiterian Empire was still eradicated with no trace or reason. None knew why, but Hind Sight wanted to find out.
"Come along dear," He said to Stardust as she finished her duty in the foyer and continued down the right corridor, "Hopefully the commander's office will have some sort of documentation as to what went on here. Perhaps it might even contain more directions." He explained to the party, eyes glinting with excitement as he passed by more empty armor suits and skeletons with no disturbance.
They were few and spread far apart, but they created a very tense and chill atmosphere. Horizon could see how they would scare off any explorers, as his own instincts were giving him bad feelings all over. The lack of proper lighting in the halls was also an issue, they had to rely on horn lights, and those only served to cast creepy shadows on every wall. Of course this also made it very hard to peek at Stardust from time to time. Horizon was already gushing with pathetic one liners to give her. But figured he would wait for an opprotune moment. Disturbing her when she was busy would only serve to annoy her.
He did find the idea of entering an Equiterian armory fascinating, maybe he could construct an adventuring armor, something to wear when exploring off duty? He could already imagine himself in a fine brass suit of armor, shining like a hero, every mare would ask 'Who is that handsome stallion?' Oh the delight!

Cloudy waited for Hind Sight's answer when she saw another pony of the party point to her. At least she wasn't being ignored.... But before Cloudy could decide what side she would bet on, Hind Sight had told them which direction they would be going. The unicorn caught the coin in the air with her magic and held it there, turning to the leader to listen to him.
It was when he talked about the raising room that the navy pony truely became interested. So often she put undead in her scary stories, to see a place where actual undead fought would be amazing. For now she would have to go along with what Hind Sight said. Cloudy brought the levitating coin in front of Tunnel and dropped it.
Cloudy followed along, now undisturbed be the skeletons, though she did make sure not to brush against any of the armor. Didn't want to make a mistake that had been made. This armory that Hind Sight talked about excited her as well. The ruins was not a hard walk from the cult, and if Cloudy showed the cult where the armory was they could take all the armor and have wonderful ancient armor for everypony in the cult, like the kind Red Charge wore! It would be wonderful. She would have to get some of her own when they went in for now, to show and prove there was an armory with armor for them. An excited smile was on Cloudy's face.
It did cross the unicorn's mind after she had been ignored by Hind Sight to talk to the pony who had spoken to her. She adjusted her pace so that she would be next to the gray pony. "By the way, my name is Cloud Dreamer, not Blue. But I like to be called Cloudy rather than my full name." It wasn't her usual introduction, but then again she didn't feel like she wanted to be all that friendly with this pony.

Nexus scowled playfully as Hind Sight informed the group of their direction, followed closely by a raise of her eyebrows as the blue mare she'd addressed froze her coin in midair. The spelunker let the bit to clatter on the ground for effect, afterwards levitating it up and stowing it in her saddlebags once more.
She trotted along with the other unicorn, looking around the dimly illuminated halls of the ruins. She shivered, excited at the prospective adventure looming around her. After the mare introduced herself as Cloudy, Tunnel nodded respectfully. From the briefness of the exchange, she got a distinctly negative vibe from the blue pony.
I wonder if she's angry about being called Blue... Maybe I can come back from that.
"Well, Cloudy, I'm Nexus. Nice to meet you." She would have offered a hoof to shake, but that wouldn't have worked out well. "So... what are you doing here? I'm here with some partners, we're looking to find some cool artifacts and stuff."[/b]

To Selenia, Retort curiously pondered. Had he forgotten to once again introduce himself? He felt downright silly for being so absentminded. ”Oh dear, did I forget my introduction again? Just been so caught up in this endeavor I just plum forgot.” He motioned a hoof to his chest. ”Name is Mortar Retort, Alchemist extraordinaire at your service. My card.” A single card for each pony present shot out of Retort’s saddlebags with a sparkle from his horn. The card featured a 10% discount on all expired potions from Retort’s shop in Canterlot – the cards weren’t particularly aimed well and shot harmlessly at the chest or flanks of the other ponies.
Continuing down the corridor to the right, Retort pondered the reanimation chamber most. It intrigued him, the magic they must of used and truthfully, he wished to see that place most of all though he’d hardly mention that openly else sound like some kind of sick and twisted pony. Armory sounded interesting enough though, perhaps there would be something of merit inside. Retort wasn’t a fighter, but the novelty and value of antiquity for would make up for its lack of practical use for this particular pony. He followed the group in the rear, taking his time inspecting the empty armors and ancient skeletons. The realization dawned on him however that being trapped down this corridor should these ‘guards’ turn into something more than simple pony-scarecrows would be rather unpleasant.
”Hind Sight! Oh Hind Sight!” Retort quickly trotted up to the lead pony, ”This has begun to make me slightly uneasy, but how dead are these skeletons? Well I mean aside from being already dead to begin with but how dead will they remain, that is, to say are they dead dead or just dead? I’d hate to find myself with my flank against a wall when they suddenly sprung to life and wished to part me with my own meat, so to speak.” He spoke in a quick and excited manner.”Can they suddenly reanimate, that is, without needing this reanimation room you spoke of. You sure of no ancient defense mechanism when some pony decides to loot their armory they are standing watch over or anything? That would likely be a right messy time. Oh what’s that?” The conversation ended aburbtly as Retort trotted ahead a meter with his horn glowing ever so brighter than before as he went to glance over another suit of unusual upright armor flanking the corridor.

Selenia grumbled to herself while the rest of the group was gawking at everything in the facility. She wouldn't even be able to take the armor home to put in her room or something, but at least that explained the incredible rarity of any Equiterian armor or artifacts that did make their way to the national black markets. Only insane ponies would risk braving the mental and physical effects of the artifacts themselves just for some money, but the stuffy and stuck-up upper class in Canterlot would often pay a very hefty sum just for the smallest artifact, well over six figures. Selenia had limited knowledge to the shady business that went on within Equestria's borders, but that truly was none of her concern.
She rolled her eyes and continued with the rest of the group down the hallway. She had even lit up her horn along with the rest of the unicorns in the group to offer some light. Her light was tinged just barely with orange, as Selenia had never been able to perfect the lighting spell. Selenia had been taught the spell by her parents instead of discovering and developing it on her own, like most young unicorns do with simple magical functions such as telekinesis, those that become central to a unicorn's life and are used almost every day without thinking about them. Partly because she disliked expending effort on things, but mainly because she preferred not to have a blinding light a few inches in front of her face. But her parents insisted she should know it. She never fixed that orange tinge, though.
Halfway through her eye-roll she caught sigh of Horizon stealing a look at Stardust's flank. Typical colts. Even when on an expedition inside some ancient ruins that are thousands of years old, their minds, and their eyes, never fail in straying to the mares. She wasn't sure if Stardust knew, and thought for a half second whether she should tell Stardust, but quickly squelched those thoughts. As it would probably cut those strings that Horizon said he would pull to get Selenia some armor, and also give Stardust the impression that Selenia was looking at her flank, too. Which was not the case, even though Stardust's rump was very fine, it wasn't the case. She finished the thought and then visibly shifted a bit, the wonder growing in her mind whether some stallion, or mare for that matter, had ever looked Selenia over without her knowing. She looked back at the rest of the group out of reflex. She was horribly uncomfortable with that sort of thing, anyway.
Selenia shook her head. She was thinking too much abut menial things. Back to the incredibly unique task at hand. She came to her senses with enough time to catch Mortar Retort's introduction and a small business card appeared in front of her face. She gave a kind nod and accepted the card, stuffing it under the small cloak she wore. No saddlebags, as she had no weapons or supplies to carry. She travelled light and swift, attributes that complimented her style of magic well. "Nice to meet you, Mortar Retort." She said, breaking the short silence after accepting his card.
She said no more and just kept walking, listening intently to Mortar's questions. He made a good point, but in truth, an arguably irrelevant one. If the skeletons can come back to life, then they can be killed, so to speak, again. They hadn't seen many skeletons on their way in, mostly empty suits of armor. If the skeletons did reanimate due to some ancient sorcery or traps or something their group was bound to stumble into, there wouldn't be terribly many for their team to negotiate with.

Hind Sight laughed heartily at Mortar's question, "Looks like they're playing their part well then, if you're that worried. Let me explain, for skeletons to be animated, there must be someone who is animating them, a puppetmaster if you will. Even if there was a trap that would alert such a puppet master, there would be no puppet master to alert. If there was an animator in here, they'd have already been aware of us." The unicorn explained with a grin, gesturing at the silent skeletal guardians.
After some more distance was put between them and the entrance, a large door was barring a room to the right, undoubtedly the armory. "It appears to be sealed," The unicorn said, running a hoof on the surface of the door, "That means something is probably in there, stand back." Preparing a spell, the unicorn touched the door with his horn, and it slammed open right away, revealing the entrance to a massive room, lined from wall to wall with spears, swords, shields, axes, bows and arrows. There were only several armor racks, but they were bearing standard reinforced leather armor, the cannon fodder armor. "I've always wondered why they kept their armory opposite of the barracks," Hind Sight mentioned, "But they actually had a very good reason to do so," He explained, "If the outposts are attacked, the skeletons at the bottleneck are the first line of defense, while any living ponies always assemble near the commander's office, if the enemy gets past the skeletons, they make sure the commander is the last to fall, as they are the most important."
"Feel free to search here for anything you'll find useful, just remember, we're travelling light, these belong to the Kingdom. "

Looking down both hallways, a shiver when through her at the mentioned information of the 'raising room.' It did not scare her though, since she was smiling. "There's a story in the stars that mentions the undead of war." She spoke quietly, trotting after Hind Sight. She did let out a squeak when she felt a card peg her at her flank. Pausing to pick up she strained her glinting silver eyes to read the script before glancing at the pony who had dispersed the cards. Stardust simply gave a grin before stowing the card in her saddle bag. The dark mare knew she had yet to formally introduce herself and figured now might have been the best time since everypony else had been.
"Nice to meet you all, I'm Stardust." She made her voice a bit louder this time, not wanting to seem as if she were mumbling to herself. Turning to follow Hind Sight yet again, she listened to Mortar Retort's questions, amused at his excited speech. Listening to the answer she couldn't help but wonder if it was a trap. Couldn't the skeletal soldiers ambush them from behind if it was the will of the puppet master? Letting the group well into the defenses of the post with a false sense of security before springing the trap? She shook her head, highlighted mane shifting a bit. It was a silly idea, the product of having seen so many stories of history through the eyes of the stars.
Realizing she had gotten quiet once again, she stopped short of bumping into Hind Sight and noticed the large door that was to the armory. As the way was opened for them she gasped at the immense amount of ancient weapons that had been stored within the armory. The post was definitely well stocked. Once given an okay Stardust stepped into the room, pencil in her mouth, and located a few of the weapons to sketch out. "This is amazing." She mumbled out between pencil strokes, appreciating the details on the hilts of the swords and the intricate designs on the shields and bows.
She took to sitting on the cold, ruined floor of the armory, not not minding the dirt and such that had gotten on her tail. It was just too fascinating for the mare at the moment. It made all the stories about the wars real, and it slowly put the pieces that had been missing from those stories back in.

This Nexus pony seemed to realize why Cloudy wasn't the happiest with her. So there were some ponies, or at least a pony, who understood social skills. "Nice to meet you Nexus. I'm here for the adventure. The artifacts would be nice, but seeing the ruins of an ancient civilization I would say is better than that." She didn't want to make herself sound greedy, nor that this was, in a way, also a spy mission for her, as anything useful here she would tell the cult of. The armory was hopefully just the beginning.
The actual armory was had much more than Cloudy was expecting. Weapons. Tons of them. If the cult got a hold of all of these, think how powerful they'd be! In hoof to hoof combat these would be incredibly useful, and they had just been lying here forever, waiting for somepony to pick them up. "Wow, the Equiterians were very good strategists," Cloudy commented after hearing what Hind Sight had to say about the armory.
It was a good thought that this truly belonged to the kingdom, but that didn't really cross the unicorn's mind. She would take little now while with Hind Sight, and help the cult rob this ruins later. After all, it's not like she would be taking it for herself. She would be helping her group. That couldn't be too awful.
But she showed none of this greedy intent in her face or movement, the blue pony only looked thoughtfully at the weapons and armor as she walked through the armory. She had decided, she would pick one weapon and some armor. That way, she didn't look too greedy yet still supplied herself with what she would like to show to the cult. She also wanted one weapon that she could carry with her when in the bog or just in general areas where monsters could be. But what to pick... Hmm, well a bow would need arrows, and those wouldn't be of endless supply. A spear would be need more aim than Cloudy had. An axe or a sword were the remaining options.
After some deliberation Cloudy decided on getting a sword. After all, in legends there were a lot of swords as weapons. The dark blue pony picked the sword she personally thought looked the best, thinking it had the nicest detailed hilt. She brought it to her with her telekinesis, tucking the hilt into the strap of her packs. She then went over to the racks of leather armor and picked some out, carefully putting it into one of her packs. The dark blue unicorn turned to Hind Sight. "Alright, I have everything I'd like."

"Really? I wouldn't have had you pegged as a thrill-seeker, Cloudy," commented the gray unicorn, a teasing grin on her face. She was prevented from speaking any more as a small paper square flew her way. It impacted harmlessly on her shoulder, giving her the urge to ham it up for comedic effect; maybe pretend to have a lethal papercut or something. A second round of thinking quashed that idea, as it might turn into a "Colt who Cried Wolf" scenario.
As luck would have it, each of the ponies was kind enough to introduce themselves, answering Tunnel's wish from earlier. She considered introducing herself to all of the others, but decided against it. If anypony wanted to know her name, they could ask. The spelunker would definitely answer.
Speaking of which, that blue pegasus that Horizon was ogling seemed the quiet type. Nexus rolled her eyes behind her shades; figures that he'd go after the shy one. The gray pony was annoyed, but content to let things play out. If things turned in her favor, great, but she couldn't expect to keep the stallion corralled forever.
At Cloudy's remark about Equiterian strategy, she snorted and added "Well, if they're such good strategists, somepony must have goofed up big time, or else they'd still be around." After a few seconds, the thought really struck the spelunker; how did these ponies die off? That was really weird. Hopefully whatever it was didn't come after them.
The group got to a sealed door, and Tunnel was about to ask how they planned on getting through to the armory when Hind Sight blasted it open. A nifty trick; maybe she could get him to teach her how to do it.
Inside was a plethora of arms and armor; the array was quite impressive. Nexus noticed that she wasn't the only one wowed by the armory; Stardust was just sitting, taking it all in. The spelunker chuckled before murmuring "Well, looks like somepony's got stars in their eyes." The thing that most amused her was that the statement could be said of more than one pony in the room, although she wouldn't drag the issue into the open unless it became expedient.
After glancing over some of the armor, Tunnel levitated a set of armor off of the rack, inspecting it more closely. It was made of copper, the light orange of the dusty metal reflecting the hornlight of the unicorns in the room. It was pretty cool, with some nifty markings here and there. Not nearly as cool as she'd like, but when the other choices were bland and even more bland, it would do.

”Ah a puppet master, that makes sense I suppose. Though, relying too heavily on one pony to control a vast army that, should they be killed themselves, would render the entire army… well dead-er, again. Sounds like a major flaw in their design.” Retort commented as he overheard Hind Sight explain, ”Or, perhaps they’d just usurp the entire empire themselves.” He gave one last inquisitive look around the hall. Glancing back over the skeletons and empty armor. ”Might be a reason they’re not around today.” He hoof taps one of the empty suits of armor before rejoining the rest of the group.
Retort watched with eager anticipation as Hind Sight used his magic to break the seal and open the armory door – and was quickly disappointed by what he saw. Yes, indeed it was just an armory but it was so plain. Nothing inside looked to be anything more than the mundane. Run of the mill weapons, some low grade armor and shields. Ancient yes, but nothing glittery, nothing ornate or ostentatious, it was so very practical. How dull. Though not deterred, Retort entered anyway with a light click in his step to rummage about the room.
What was Retort to do, there was nothing here useful for him. An alchemist doesn’t need swords or bows. The armor perhaps, but that would clash with his cape and fez. Then he came upon the shields, wooden with brass fixtures and rivets with the seal of the Equiterian Empire painted on its surface. Immediately thought that of all things, least this would look good on a wall in his shop so he levitated it from its stand and fixed it upon his back. Tying it to the bedroll so that it rested over the third saddlebag and nearly flat upon his back.

"Don't be silly, an outpost like this probably had about a dozen animators, or 'puppet-masters' even more." Hind Sight scoffed, "It really wasn't that easy to stop them, I assure you. Though why they are gone is anyone's guess. That's what we're trying to find out though." The unicorn pointed out, then observing the arms themselves, before a cry from Horizon caught everyone's attention.
"Hey, Hind Sight, what's this sword all about?" The pegasus warrior asked, gesturing at a rather unique sword with a ver distinctive hilt in the shape of a scorpion. Any unicorn would be able to feel a magical hum about this sword, not so much from the sword itself, but more from the substance coating the blade.
"My friend, that is the sword of a member of the Praetorian Guard!" Hind Sight exclaimed excitedly, "They were the elite of the Equites, with the patron deity of Scorpio, the Celestial Scorpion! But what would they be doing over here in this outpost?" The unicorn's eyes gleamed as he approached the weapon, his horn glowing brightly as he examined it, "The coating of the blade, yes, it is Scorpio's poison! My friend, this weapon is possibly more valuable than this entire outpost put together! You have stumbled across one of the rarest forms of armament in the world!" He indicated to Stardust to sketch the weapon, as he continued to scan over it with his horn excitedly. "Look at the remarkable craftsmanship, pearl dust and cobalt hilt? Incredible! The blade is made of tempered steel, still sharp..." He made way for Stardust to sketch the piece, as he himself began to hastily take notes on its forming. From his saddle he took out a flask and a delicate tool, and scraped some of the coating off the blade into it. "Amazing, after such long exposure it is just as potent!"
"So, do I get to keep it?" Horizon asked, looking a bit sheepish at the question, this was obviously something with incredible value to Hind Sight, but he found it, right?
Hind Sight gave him a broad grin, "Of course my friend, but when we are back in Canterlot, I would ask your permission to take it to the royal laboratories for analysis. I am certain the Princess would agree that you keep it afterwards. Seeing as we are mostly unicorns, I don't believe any of our friends here would have a problem with that?" He looked around in case of any objections.

Cloudy looked around, noticing she had probably taken the most stuff. Oh well, nopony seemed to notice or care. And anyway, that was a good thing, the rest could be put towards the cult. So the less they took the more she eventually would. It worked out for her.
Horizon's voice quickly caught her attention. He was talking about a sword, a sword Cloudy immediatly thought was far greater than her own. And of course it just happened to be some sort of artifact. A super amazing artifact. How in Equestria had she not noticed it? She was sure she had looked at every sword, but her path through had accidentally made her skip over a few swords. Cloudy bit her tongue to keep her from verbally scolding herself or yelling how she wanted it.
"Wow, that's a quite nice sword," Cloudy said while Hind Sight tried to get the poison. "I've never seen an actual artifact." Though her mind was trying to form a plan to eventually get that sword into the cult's hands, her face held a simple smile and a look of curiousity. After having to master the looks of a pony's emotions in her head for illusions, Cloudy had become quite a good actress.
"Worth more than this whole outpost you say, I'm guessing there are few valuable artifacts then. And oh no, no objections here. It's great for it to be used for scientific purposes." Cloudy delighted tone felt so fake in her throat it almost hurt to keep it. Just drop it before it becomes a problem Cloudy, she thought to herself. If they catch a flash of your green eyes they'll surely suspect something. The unicorn took a few seconds to compose herself.
Feeling like Nexus was the only pony she was on a talking level with, Cloudy trotted over to the gray pony. "Celestia, that makes the sword I chose look like scrap metal. I swear, this expedition just seems to give something more amazing by the minute. Keep this up and I'll be sad to leave this place, " she said with a small laugh. "I'm just starting to wonder how deadly that poison is and hoping nopony touches it. I didn't bring any first aid kit."

"That makes sense." Selenia huffed from her side of the group. "Anything here would have made its presence known a good long while ago. We probably wouldn't even have set foot inside the place." She stood by as Hind Sight blew the door to the armory open. She also caught sight of Tunnel's grin at that trick, no doubt she was going to learn it sooner or later. Either way, Selenia calmly trotted into the armory with the rest of the group, looking around at the various implements of war. She immediately spied the armor rack and stayed well away from it. "Even if that armor isn't cursed, I still don't like it. Leather does nothing against magic or a well sharpened blade." She examined the spear rack and sifted through a few, flexing the shafts and inspecting the spearpoints. She picked one that was nearly as long as she was and had Equiterian markings carved into the head. "Riddles in the dark..." She said quietly to herself. Her attention was quickly grabbed by Horizon's raised voice, which nearly made Selenia jump. Only then did she realize how quiet the whole group truly was for the duration of their trip so far.
She levitated the spear overhead and out of the way, walking over to Horizon and the sword he found. She felt a magical aura emanating from the blade as she came closer, and watched in curiosity as Hind Sight scraped off some of the magical coating. "Such a weapon... The Praetorian Guard must have been quite the fighting force to be supplied with these." She snorted in approval at the mention of its worth. "I wouldn't be so hasty in your assumptions about the worth of this outpost. If we just stumbled upon this sword in one of the first rooms, who knows what we might find deeper in the base?" Selenia supplied an enthusiastic grin and stuck her spear, blade down, into a crack in the floor to rest.
She stepped closer, the aura around the blade almost unbearably powerful as she examined it closely. "If this is some kind of poison, Cloud Dreamer, It is definitely not natural." She withdrew her head and held a hoof to her temple, a small headache developing from her proximity to the relic.
